Neil Diamond reveals his Inspiration for 'Sweet Caroline'

I'm honestly surprised he remembers who he wrote it about in the first place. ;)

Let us not forget just how long ago this song was written and the context of the times. The Kennedy years and camelot era WAS not the same as current day.

How many of you would be thrilled if some 28 yo wrote those lyrics based on being "inspired" by your small child? I think I'd be a bit creeped out by that. Just me.

As for the Hugh Hefner analogy ... those girls that date Hef are doing it simply for what's in it for them. Big difference between being a child and being the inspiration for a song with suggestive lyrics and being an adult who knows better.

Childrens hand are soft, sweet and warm.....nothing perverted about that....

I just think of my babies hands on my cheek..... geesh where are your minds people.....

We're not alone -- various deejays were going crazy this morning with song parodies... "Turn on your night-light!"

I don't think the guy is a child molester or anything. I think he decided to get himself some press by making up a story to impress Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, and didn't think about the sleazy ramifications of that particular song being associated with a pre-pubescent child.

For what it's worth, Paul McCartney was inspired to write "Hey Jude" when he was hanging out with Julian Lennon after his parents' divorce, and the kid was sad, and PM said "Hey, Jules, don't make it bad" -- then decided later to change it to "Jude" because it sounded better.

It's possible to be inspired and go on to write something unrelated to the person who inspired it. But generally speaking, the more "touching" in the song... the more best left unsaid.

The news also pointed out how creepy it seems.
I'm with another poster who says he probably just said that to kiss up to Caroline on her birthday.

I believe she could have inspired the song.... but then he went from there.... not the WHOLE song is about her.

Yeah, that is what I think. He might have liked her name and thought it fit in well with the song he was writing about someone else.

His song Cracklin Rosie is about a bottle of hootch.

At least this is what I read he said years & years ago.
