Y'all are super creative so hope you can help.

I need to find some sort of gift/ rememberance/ keepsake for a new baby girl. We don't know the family too well at all, but still want to remember her.

She's #2 girl, and the first baby girl has lots to hand down to her new baby sister.

It will be a mailed gift so keep shipping costs in mind too :)

I would be VERY grateful for any unique ideas you may have!

Are they Christian? A "baby's first Christmas" ornament is the first thing that came to mind. This other items is also Christian based...a white lace hankie that's folded into a bonnet. She can wear it (my girls wore them for the Christening) and then it becomes their something old for their wedding. I can find these usually in Irish shops. Here's an example: http://www.onesmallchild.com/products/Crochet-Lace-Hankie-Bonnet.html I've never ordered from them, it's just to show you what they look like.

If they're not Christian, Things Remembered has silver plated items, such as a rattle, that might be appropriate and not terribly expensive.

I hope that helps a bit.

I'd go with a frame. DH and I just bought one that includes spots for Baby's first prints (hand and foot). Its super cute.

I worry that they'll get way too many Baby's 1st Christmas ornaments and a lot of the "keepsake" stuff all depends on taste and if you don't know them well then they might not like it enough to display it.

I agree with this, but I have to add that I'm not a picture frame person. I got tons of them for engagement and wedding gifts and again for baby gifts (for 4 kids!). I ended up selling them at yard sales:rolleyes1.

It does really depend on the recipient and their likes/dislikes. I can honestly say the only "keepsake" things I've kept from my babies are the handmade afghans and all the Christmas ornaments.

Not really a keepsake, but when DS was born, my MIL's friend sent us a small piggy bank with 10 $1 coins in it. An inexpensive gift, but it was a nice gesture.

A personalized Christmas Ornament

I think my new go-to gift might be a t-shirt from the parents' alma mater. Just did this for friends of ours. Had a hard time finding what I wanted to get them, and then they seemed to have so much and most of what they needed I went online and had delivered to their house t-shirts in 12 or 18 month sizes
My first XYZ School T-shirt shirts. Mom loved them!

For a girl, there is always a special lace handkerchief.

A small bit of hand-sewing and some matching ribbon can turn it into a Christening bonnet. You give it with the idea that when she grows up she can treasure it, and if she marries, she can carry it on her wedding day as her something old. If they are not Christian the bonnet thing is irrelevant, but you can have it monogrammed (the usual color is blue, naturally), and it will be something special for her anyway.

Some people do the poem thing, I'm not much for that; you can get the idea across equally well with a warm personal note. Box it in a preservation box or a little cotton bag so that it will not discolor over time.

Jewelry is nice, too; even if they can't wear it for a while. DD received a lovely pair of pearl stud earrings that I will keep for her until she is old enough to wear them. Open chain bracelets are nice as well, because they can be shortened up with a claw clasp.

A stretchy pearl baby bracelet. We gave one to a relative and they loved it.Big Hit...grandmothers were so mad they did't think of it:) Had baby wear it for her first picture...Very cute. TJ Maxx often has them for $10 to $12. Also online for a little more! My mom would always give a small gold baby ring. With price of gold now it might be a little pricey.

Anything hand made would be very special. Michaels/Joannes/Hobby Lobby all have stamped cross stich kits for not too much money (if you have enough time). I still have things my mother embroiderd for me when I was a child and I plan to hang them in my own daughters nursery! :) Or you could find something ceramic to hand paint.

I found at Kohls a Name A Star Bear - the kind where you get to name the star. I added a gift card and my niece loved it. :)

This depends on the parents, but the biggest hit of a baby present I ever gave was to my cousin - I got baby sized pink Nike shoes. The father loved it.

love the hanky! my friend just got hers in july at her wedding shower. her sister was the maid of honor and read the poem. the bride who "doesn't ever cry" was in tears, as we all were. it was super cute.

if you scrapbook and you don't think the mother will (or have time) you can make a small pre-fab book where all she has to do is put pics in certain places.

since she is a sibling you can always get something customized and matching for both. like get the baby the college shirt and one for her big sister. i used to sell expensive children's cloths and parents often got an outfit for one child and then would try to match it up later for the other and it never worked. even if its something as small as a tee or dresses its a cute gesture.

You have gotten some good suggestions here. I'll add one more - send a little something for the big sister. Depending on her age, a coloring book, a book to read with Mom, a puzzle, a big sister shirt, a soft baby doll to take care of - something small (and quiet) to show she is not forgotten with all the new baby excitement.

I just recently heard this baby gift idea at a Bridal shower. It is very unique, but one that I think I'll use with a new great nephew as a Christmas gift.

Have a cake knife engraved with the baby's name and date of birth. The knife is used to cut the baby's birthday cakes every year and then can be used for Bridal showers or Wedding cake or Groom's cake.

For a #2 girl, I always try to get something personalized. My favorite is personalized bloomers, but I have also done blankets and bibs.

Are you at all crafty?

An investment in cross stitch fabric and floss and a few needles and an alphabet pattern book - along with some time - can create a LOT of inexpensive very keepsakey sorts of gifts. Baby's first Christmas ornaments, frames of names, birthdates and birth stats. Wedding keepsakes.....
