need unique *inexpensive* baby gift / keepsake

I'm not big on trinket-type of keepsakes that sit there or are for decoration... maybe because I got a ton of it when DD was born & none of it was really my style. I also got a LOT of 1st Christmas ornaments (both for 2008 and the year later in 2009 which was her actual first Christmas -- she was due 12/31).

I'd get something functional but has some longevity or thought to it. Like the alma mater onesie that a PP mentioned. Or a blankie/lovie. Are you crafty? For some friends who just had a baby, I sewed 3 fabric building blocks and embroidered each one with each of her initials.

My favorite gift from when my babies were born were personalized baby blankets. We got one blanket where the birth statistics were embroidered around the 4 edges of the blanket. Do a search for Fillintheblankie. 9 years later we still have the blanket and now my dd uses it for her baby dolls.

Or, there's also a book you could do (once you find out the baby's name), called "Baby's Very Own Name".

Both were cute, inexpensive and unique.

We got one of these too and I will be doing it for friends babies in the future. It's the size of regular toy wooden block, one side has the first initial, one side has full name, one has date and time of birth, one has city of bithm etc. It's perfect because it's a keepsake with all the little details, but small enough to be around forever and fit in any decor.

Someone gave my parents a small personalized plaque when I was born - I still have it 34 years later. No idea what happened to anything else from 1977!

One of my favorite gifts was monthly stickers for my little guy. You stick them on a white onsie and take a picture each month. The stickers themselves aren't really a keepsake, but the pictures are priceless! Every month when I posted the new one on Facebook, people asked me where I got the onsies, but they are really just stickers! Here is just one of the many on etsy.com. If you go there, type in monthly stickers or monthly onsies and you will get a ton!
