need some pricing suggestions for American Girl Doll Stuff // Page 2 - more Pics

Samantha and Kirsten are now retired, as well. I do suggest making an account at AG Playthings and asking there; they are the experts.

Ooh, I have a question for you! I have a doll with an X on her behind that I bought at a benefit sale in Madison for my SIL who did not buy her afterall....let's not even go there! ;) I want to sell her but that little X on her little bum is making me wonder what I should do.

As for those dolls pictured here....was there a time that AG dolls torsos were a darker color fabric? Or is that fabric supposed to be the same color as the legs and arms like they are now? If so, I am thinking sewage back up and that is just freaking me out.

I don't think they were ever darker. While I was washing them, that color ran right off into the sink for as long as I would let it get wet, the color ran.

I concur with those who have said someone will buy them. Top dollar, no, but there are folks who do their own doll repair and there is certainly enough usable in these for parts. (Shoot some folks even are just looking for eyeballs to swap out :))

I do not think you need to say "I picked these up out of the trash". I think it is sufficent to say "These dolls are very dirty and best suited as parts for repairs." You're listing them on Craigslist, it's not like they won't see them before you exchange money. There's no deception, if they can't tell from pictures, any adult looking at them in person will see in present state they aren't suitable for nighttime cuddling.

OK, really, this is over the top. Waaay over the top. You've been yanking all our chains the whole time, right? If so, you pulled a good one! If not, well, see the link in post 83 :rotfl:

gross.....put them back in the trash....and as a pp said, rethinking purchases off ebay, cl, etc....

well, I'm still sending in Felicity to be repaired and know a couple of people that would be willing to send the other dolls in for torso replacement for a cheap AG doll. Thanks for the concerns and different perspectives.
It seems that the torsos are the worst part of the dolls. If I were you, I would replace the torsos starting with the retired dolls. It looks like a new torso is $29 + $7 in shipping per doll, so you would be spending $36 to make the doll to be presentable and, more importantly, sanitary. She'll even come back with a hospital gown so you won't have to sell her naked. I guess that doesn't leave a whole lot of profit for you once you sell them and pay eBay fees. Maybe Craigslist will be better for them ... especially once Felicity is sold out on the AG website.

Unfortunately, I think they are all too far gone to sell in their current condition :(.

;38591783Some folks (like those over at a certain doll board mentioned earlier in this thread which I can proudly say I'm now banned from) get into nasty debates about the morality of selling dolls from the sale all the time. I've seen those threads on here too occassionally. They strike me as sour grapes from those who can't get to the sale but that's another thread entirely.
Anyway, as those who've dealt with me will confirm, I'm not one of those ebay resellers we all complain about - my items are mostly preowned or new catalog/store items we bought three of (one for each girl) then later decided one would do - but I'm not going to get all in somebody's face about what they have a right to do with something they own & paid for either... :rolleyes1

Yep that is why I have had her in my closet for three years! :rotfl: I figure I will list her on Craigslist and tell them about the x assuming she is just going to be played with, not collected. She is not a historical doll anyway but she is darn pretty!! :wizard:

I just have to say how refreshing it is to have an ongoing thread where people are questioning the correctness of selling an AG doll on ebay and it has absolutely nothing to do with whether there's an x on the doll's bahookie or not from the benefit sale... :lmao:

Sorry, I know I shouldn't be amused but, for some totally incomprehensible reason, I find that I am. Sort of makes those tiny little x's on the back seam look like a non-issue in comparison, doesn't it? :rolleyes1

Did you not notice that one of the dolls is wrapped in silver duct tape?

Maybe they are from the "Bad Seed" collection.

Her torso ripped through while I was washing her and I didn't want her to come apart completely.

the gown that felicity was wearing in the photo, (nightgown?) that was completely brown, is now sparkling white. A little Oxi-clean and bleach goes a long way. It took spots out of a bunch of other clothing too. They look almost brand new.

yes, the torso's are the worst. In person, you can tell it's rust stains, just like on the clothing.

If I had to make an educated guess as to what happened to the dolls, I'd say they were stored in the basement and there was a flood. Maybe rain, maybe the pipes burst (which would explain the rust). I doubt they were descended upon by a pack of rabid animals. Or rats.

But someone, I'm sure, would think they were an excellent addition to a Halloween costume.

As for their clothing -- go for it. Even if you got 99 cents an outfit, that's still 99 cents more than you had before.

That's my guess and my look at it. Anything is more than I had before. The house is on a lake.

Have you ever hung up an article of clothing that you thought you might wear again soon (like a sweater) and then for some reason you don't get it out to wear it again til several months if not the next year?
Notice that there may be what looks like rust stains or discoloring in areas where maybe you spilled something and didn't realize it?

I wonder if the torsos of these dolls were maybe played with and maybe drooled on, cried on, food spilled on, peed on, whatever and that would explain the really bad discoloration.

I would also agree with the poster that mentioned they may have been in a flood-heaven forbid a sewage back up.

I think I would just toss them back in the trash to be safe. It's not worth the aggravation of trying to sell them. IMO

Rust wouldn't cause that dark chocolate color, though, that was on one of the dolls. Sorry, I don't remember which one it was.

No, the first dolls had off-white muslin bodies.
All the original outfits for Kirsten, Molly and Samantha had high necklines, so you didn't see that their body was a different color than the arms, legs and head.
Felicity was the first doll with a trunk that matched the vinyl parts of her body. Since dress styles in her time included lower necklines, the off-white body color would have been very noticeable.

I don't know what happened to those dolls, but the bodies look horrible and I don't know what happened to them to stain them. The bodies are supposed to match the arms, legs and head, not be several colors darker. They look really dark colored - not even close to how they should look.
I think you would be best off selling them as is for parts only. I have bought some dolls that were totally made of vinyl because I knew I could clean them and then disinfect them with bleach water. I would not even want the vinyl pieces because the bodies look so bad, I would be worried about cleaning anything.

Or having them end up in some child's hands....just for some extra cash.

What I find strange, is why isn't the cotton batting inside a nasty color?? To me it seems like something that stained the outside, but not sink into the actual doll.

I would send the worst doll to be repaired by AG and see how she comes back. Honestly, rat poop, sewage, or any other disgusting thing people want to throw out there, doesn't seem to be the cause of the discoloration. The hair would be in a much bigger mess if it was any of those. And probably eaten through if it was a rodent or animal.

The thought of even touching the dolls let alone bringing them into my home is beyond comprehension. The dolls were in the garbage for a reason. That is where they belong. For the mere pittance they will fetch on ebay, is it really worth sacrificing someone, anyone getting ill? The OP has no idea what caused the stains, the markings, the rips and the odor. I am truly disgusted by thought of this.

Wow, you can tell that from a picture? That's impressive.
