Hi -

I posted this on the California & West board as well, but this one gets much more traffic.

Last year, on our way from the Grand Canyon to the Phoenix airport, we were detoured and ended up going through Sedona. It was beautiful, but we were short on time and had to just drive through. We were definitely miffed that our TA didn't suggest that we go there for a day or two on our western vacation.

Well, DIS people are the ones in the know (thanks for suggesting the Candy Cane Inn in Anaheim, loved it!) so I am coming to you for suggestions.

DH and I are considering going to Sedona for a 4 day weekend, just the 2 of us.

Where should we stay and where should we stay away from?

What should we not miss while we are there?

When is the best time of year to go? Why?

TIA

We own a Hyatt Timeshare, and I hear the Hyatt in Sedona is spectacular! We haven't been there yet, though. My sisiter & DBIL have another Timeshare in Sedona and usually go once a year. It's a beautiful area. I hope you get some concrete suggestions on where to stay.

(I hear the Pink Jeep Tours are a lot of fun.)

Sedona is great! I can't help you much with where to stay, though, because we have family who lives there and we just stay with them. I hear the Enchantment Resort is supposed to be fabulous, but I think it's expensive and I don't know your budget. Wherever you do stay, make sure you have a great view of the Red Rocks.

To do:
Hiking to Chicken Point (or just go on a hike somewhere)
Tlaquepaque
Montezuma Castle
Jerome
Art galleries
See Sedona from above: my dad did a hot air balloon ride, my brother and SIL have done a plane ride
Stargazing
Oak Creek Vista (great place to buy Native American art and jewelry)
Chapel of the Holy Cross

A couple of fun places to eat are the Coffee Pot Restaurant and the Red Planet Diner. Tlaquepaque has several nice restaurants.

WE LOVE SEDONA! We were there about 3 years ago, went in August, and stayed at a timeshare called Sedona Vacation Club, Los Abrigados. We just loved it, the resort and the town. We did a jeep tour, horseback ride, and some general hiking around the red rocks. Just gorgeous, one of the most beautiful places on earth. They also have Slide Rock Park, I think it's between Sedona and Flaggstaff.

We also spent a night at Monument Valley (close to Four Corners area), it's amazing, but it was a very LONG drive there and back. We also spent a night or two in Flaggstaff, explored the mountains there, went to the Lowell Observatory, and took the train from Williams AZ to the Grand Canyon.

I just saw that you are only going to be there 4 days, so of course you wouldn't do all the stuff we did in 10 days. Definitely do a jeep tour, some hiking, take a city tour (they show you all the famous red rocks and what they are named, plus the Chapel of the Holy Cross), and go view the sunset one day (take the road up to the airport, tons of people gather there every day to watch the sunset).

If you go in August, that is part of "monsoon" season in Arizona, so you have more of a chance of thunderstorms and some humidity. We went another time in May and weather was really good, but we spent most of our time in Flaggstaff and it was a little cool. I think May or June in Sedona would be perfect.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I've heard the pink jeep tours mentioned several times. I definitely need to look into that more.

We're semi-active (we like to relax as much as we work out :rotfl2: !) so doing some hiking sounds like fun.

I checked the average highs/lows and looks like May would be the time to go. Not too hot, not too cool.

We don't need elaborate accommodations, but something nice and clean.

Again, thanks to all who've commented.

L'Auberge de Sedona is beautiful to stay at. Very serene, service is great. They have a star watching activity on Saturday night I believe which is free. Check out their website.

If you don't want to stay at the above, we have also stayed at a B&B for a night and it was fine. Not as nice as L'Auberge, but ok.

Hi, I used to live in Flagstaff, so I'm quite familiar with the area. As the previous poster said, L'Auberge is beautiful. My favorite place, however, is the Briar Patch inn, (briarpatchinn.com). It's in Oak Creek Canyon and is very nice. One thing you absolutely must do is drive up thru Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff. It's one of the most beautiful drives in the country. Oak Creek Canyon has lots of great hikes. There are lots of trail guide books available. Also, there is a road that takes you out to some huge rocks where people go to watch the sunsets. The locals will know what I'm talking about, I forget the name of the road. The sunsets on the red rocks are spectacular. Also, as previously mentioned, the Grand Canyon railroad out of Williams is fun. The best time of year is definitely spring. Late April and May. Autumn is also very nice, although you do get your afternoon monsoon quite often, but they never last long. Autumn in Flagstaff is gorgeous with all the aspen trees. The Museum Club on Rte. 66 in Flagstaff is a fun place for drinks and music. Granny's Closet on Milton in Flagstaff is a very good steak house. Have fun!

During Spring Break we are spending a couple of nights at the Best Western Arroyo Roble....got a good rate through the Entertainment Book Best Western coupon.

The Enchantment Resort is magical!! There are so many activities included in the resort fee. There is also an incredible program for children.

....and the spa..... is to die for. You can't go wrong with the Enchantment.

Yes, the Enchantment Resort is wonderful! I stayed there with my family a few years ago.

Definitely stay in a location where you get a view of the Red Rocks. Sunsets are just as wonderful as the sunrises and I especially loved looking at all of the stars at night! :)

Have a wonderful time! Sedona is a beautiful area! :)
