So we have decided to take our boys out of the private school they've attended for 3 years - we're big supporters - I'm on the Parent - Teacher Fellowship Board.

I have to call the school and let them know they won't be returning this year - and I am avoiding making that call! It's not like they're gonna say, yes, they are coming back, pay your $ and bring them - it's just I'm SO non confrontational/avoid conflict whenever possible!

I read the policy, now I have to figure out which administrative assistant I need to talk to!

Not having kids, i've never dealt with schools, public or private. But I can't imagine that they'd be angry about it. More like "Oh we're sorry to hear that" or "Is there a problem you have with the school we should know about", that kind of thing.

 I hear you. Soon I'll be calling the Cubmaster. Putting it off for a little while longer, though...

Have you made sure that there is room at your local public school for your kids?

It sounds like it's going to be harder for you than your kids, since you're so involved at their school. Good luck.

I had to do something similar last week, and it was hard. Hope it goes well.

I'm just curious as to why you have to call them? Won't they figure it out when the tuition check does not come?

My DD is starting a Charter School in the fall and I am not contacting her former school. I figure, they will figure it out when she does not arrive on the 1st day.

Can you just enroll them in their new school and let the new school ask for their transcripts? I think they'll figure it out then...

I know it will be hard, but please don't take the don't call advice! Schools need this info to determine staff size, room availability, etc.

Having to bring in portables, hire extra staff etc. to prepare for kids who never come OR bring in last minute portables and hire staff for kids who register on the first day is no picnic!

Even the little things teachers do like making nametags, class lists, etc. that will all need to be changed add up.

Schools need to know ahead of time so they can enroll another child wanting the spot. NCLB has created a real problem in this area for many school systems. There are children needing to move and can't because folks just abandon their previous school.

I'm surprised by people who've said, "just don't tell them." Do you really have that little respect for the school your child is leaving? They need as much information as possible to plan classrooms for the fall.

In the case of the OP, her contract probably obligates her to formally withdraw. Even if it doesn't, decency certainly does. When we withdrew our two older children from a private school after five years, our situation was like the OP's -- I had been an active volunteer and DH was on the Board of Directors. It was very important to us to leave on good terms -- besides being the decent thing to do, we didn't want to burn any bridges in case we wanted to come back. We scheduled a meeting with the head of the school to explain to him why were doing it.

Since it is a private school I was assuming that there was some sort of deadline for fall enrollment and that if no payment/contract is received then the school would know the child/ren would not be returning.

I hate making phone calls, too, even for stuff much smaller stuff. But what about a letter? - They might be more comfortable having notification in writing anyway.
