Need nutritional info for son w/T1D

Yes, those apps are very helpful! Would have just thought Disney would have its own resources for the food they are serving for guests!

The main reason they don't is because they can change manufacturers from cruise to cruise depending on where they may need to restock.
While someone may have used one brand one cruise the next cruise it could be something different which is why they tell you to ask onboard rather than give wrong information.
While they try to keep it all the same all the time, it's not like on land where they have loads of storage. If they stock up in a different port or their usual supplier is out, they have to use something different.

I remember reading about one mom with a child with diabetes that mentioned her stateroom host hadn't left any chocolates because he thought the child wasn't allowed to have them. If this is an issue (or not), you can discuss it with your stateroom host. Normally, each room gets a chocolate at turndown for every member of the room.

At least you have your son's diagnosis and can go forward with making sure his life is as minimally impacted as possible.

My son would probably do the same! Haha! Do you try to measure the Mac + fruit before she eats it? You are probably able to eyeball it, I bet! How did you dose the Mac? There's a Mac he loves that's 30 for 3/4 cup but the blue box Mac is like 42 ... were they able to give any idea how much the Mac was? Or did you make a good guess?

I didn't think it came from a box at all. Interesting if it does, to me, it seemed like it was regular elbow macaroni with their own cheese sauce. I have bought kraft mac & cheese and it definitely didn't seem like any I have ever bought. But who knows :)
I never do her shots before she eats. I always do it after- sometimes she will eat all her food plus dessert sometime she will eat half so I wait. I don't ever mention to the servers about their diabetes. I don't do their sugar free desserts and whenever you mentioned diabetes, people immediately think sugar-free and I don't feel like educating people between the difference between type one and type two while I'm on vacation :)
I do request a sharps container from our stateroom person.
Yes, I literally guess at the amount and carb counts. Trying to measure it would just be too hard. If she's been playing a ton and swimming that day I might back off and how much insulin I give her anyway and may do 1/2 of what I would at home. You will do great! If he is higher after the first day, then you will know to guess higher. If low, then you guessed too much. It sounds terrible typing that, but really with kids and their activity level, it does come down to guessing sometimes and just doing your best. I am sure you are much better at guessing the carbs than you think :)
Oh, and you can also search under the forum of DISabilities, they also have some great hints for type one in the parks.

Thank you for this - I have been calling the general number. I will look for the special services number now!

You should have them make a note on your reservation as well. And request a sharps container.

As for bringing food onboard -- anything factor-sealed and non-perishable is fine. Juice boxes are fine if not opened, if he opens one to drink while waiting to board you will need to toss it or wait for him to finish. Snack-type items -- Kind bars, granola bars, whatever works for him. Individually wrapped is fine even if the main box is open.

Enjoy your cruise!

FYI - you can request the sharps container in advance via this super easy online form that replaced the old print/fax system fairly recently. https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/special-services-information-form/

btw, I'm very surprised to hear they use Kraft mac n cheese. What my daughter ate nearly every day didn't look anything like it... much saucier, far bigger noodles. Maybe it's one of those things that varies ship to ship. I would have guessed it was a Velveeta-based sauce.

Ours looked like it, but again we were on a packed presidents week cruise, always ask if needed. This was the kids meal in MDR, the room service mac n cheese was different I do remember and that is why I asked our server, why different ... he only offered that it was the blue box.

DCL will not provide carbs for liability reasons. Unfortunately, you're on your own. Portion sizes vary and if it is not prepackaged, there are no carbs provided. Also, please don't tell your server that your child is a T1 diabetic, they don't know the difference. They will push the sugar free desserts and look at you funny if you order regular food. If you don't already have one, get a pocket size Calorie King book. It will help.

Whether on the cruise or the parks, I always bring juice boxes, PB crackers, packaged nuts, packaged fruit chews, etc. Nobody ever questioned them. They are a life saver when those pesky lows hit in line or on excursions. Make sure you check BGs often and pack twice as many supplies as you would usually use during the time period you are travelling. Managing T1D gets easier and less stressful over time. It doesn't slow my DD down at all. She uses the CGM and a pump. We have been to the parks many times and 5 DCL cruises since her diagnosis. She just spent 16 days in Europe with a high school band group, the first time traveling by herself with T1D, and she did a fabulous job of keeping herself in check, not necessarily in range all the time, but in check!

Otherwise, just stay aware, relax and have a great time!

I'm sure it must be one of those things that varies. But I'm chuckling at the room service vs MDR bit. I was so sick of DD ordering it at dinner AND eating it at lunch - Cabanas version was always the same as the MDR version. And I just didn't think it was all that good myself! Anyway, I finally got her to start ordering off the adult menu at dinner (and it was a revelation to her), but for whatever reason - she HAD to have it via room service one day. However they describe it on the room service menu (baked mac in a crock or whatever) had her convinced it would be different, like my homemade version - which is a Martha Stewart recipe with a homemade bechamel sauce, gruyere, nutmeg, fresh buttery breadcrumb topping, you get the picture. It arrived and was that same danged MDR/Cabanas mac n cheese, just served in a little brown crock. She was so bummed!! I'll have to tell her that some cruises really do have different versions for room service. :)
