Need help w/ work situation - should I go to Hawaii? UPDATE POST 23

Should I go to Hawaii?

  • Yes, suck it up and take the kids. There are worse places to be than daycare in Hawaii.

  • Yes, but leave the kids with your parents, despite their health issues.

  • No, it's logistically impossible.

  • Other, see below.

If your conference is more than a month or so away and the airfare and some expenses are paid I will offer to go and watch your kids. :flower:

Yeah, I know you want someone you know and I can't blame you. But I thought I would try to get myself a trip to Hawaii. :teeth:

I am not sure that taking someone along would be financially feasible for you, and would be a strain on your kids.

Like another poster suggested, maybe find someone that can watch your kids in the evenings and take them to your normal daycare for the day. Have you ever used any high school kids for babysitters? With their parents help, this may work out. A neighbor?

I know that if my wife and I had a friend/neighbor in this situation we'd help out in a heartbeat even though we might not be the 'bestest' friends.

Do you have a church that you can use as a resource? Maybe there is a outlet there to find an adult to house and babysit for you?

Hi all! Well, after telling my boss this morning that I would work it out and attend, then spending the day trying to convince my younger sister to either babysit our parents babysitting my children or come with me (trust me, I was desperate!), then negotiating who would cover what...word came down at the end of the day that "Due to budgetary reasons, attendance at the xxx conference this year will be limited." :cool1: Only the top 5 - 10 people in the company are going, and I ain't one of them!!! :worship:

So, I come out looking like a rose and I won't have to go! :rose: I never thought I'd be so happy passing up a "free" trip to Hawaii. :rotfl2:

Oh, well... I just read your update... glad it worked out.

I'll leave my post as is.

If you can't get your kids to come with you for some reason I would consider hiring someone to come care for the kids while they are at their grandparents.

The sitter would be responsible for fulltime care and their grandparents would also be there. If anything happened your bases would be covered, such as if the grandparents had a medical emergency.

I don't know what babysitting service you used, but thought I'd mention that I read in the newspaper a while back that a company called Kama'aina Kids is very reputable, but they had an incident whereas some kids were released:

http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2004/Dec/15/ln/ln24p.html I read the online paper a lot because I am from there and remember reading this so I just want you to be aware of the situation. They are still one of the most popular, reputable daycare companies there. If I were you I would make a call to the DHS office there to double check on the daycare you will be using for your kids if they go just to be sure.

GL and please let us know what you decide. :wizard:

Okay, the kicker? My boss was told today she wasn't important enough to go either. She still has to plan it all, but now she can't go. Her husband had just bought his non-refundable tickets too. Is it awful that I find much glee in this?

Nope not awful at all! ;) I find it pretty amuzing myself! :rotfl:

Glad things worked out.
Maybe you will get another trip to Hawaii soon and you will be able to figure out your babysitting situation then.

Glad it worked out for you. :flower:

I'm glad it worked out for you, it seems like this often do.

But I have to admit, I (wrongly!) assumed all this time that your boss was a guy! I can't believe a woman would put another woman in that position.

Oh, my boss is AWFUL! She's the type that thinks she has to be a "man" to succeed. Has no understanding of kids and family life. She's over 40 and only got married last year. However, they have never lived together (even now). He lives in NYC and she live 45 minutes away in NJ. So, it's not like it would be impossible for them to live together.

She told me I need to work more hours - I'm not the only one who has a life outside of work - she "has tennis and....tennis". I guess playing paddle tennis once or twice a week is equal to taking care of two kids and a household by yourself.

She's crazy.

Well I guess commuting from NY would take away from her paddle tennis time. Who needs love and companionship when you have paddle tennis? And it's not like half of NJ commutes to NY everyday or anything. I mean seriously, that commute would be just too, too much. :rotfl: I can understand why she has to work so many hours to get her job done, she's just jealous you don't have to. :teeth:
