Need help from HHI experts: important bug question!

We have been to HHI three times so far. Our stay at DVC was great. But a subsequent stay at Sea Pines has made my husband reluctant to return: thanks to the Palmetto bugs. As a former New Yorker, a roach is a roach to my DH and Harbour Town and Sea Pines were crawling with them.

My questions are:
1. Is there a Palmetto bug season?
2. Is there ever a problem with these critters at DVC?

No, I don't think there is a "season" to the Palmetto bugs -- they're just there, unfortunately.

We go to the Disney Hilton Head resort several times a year and have only seen them a couple of times. The resort does a pretty good job of keeping them away, (which may be why you didn't see them there) but it is pretty much impossible to completely avoid them....Sorry.

To be honest with you I've never seen them at DVC properties. And that goes for Hilton Head, where I go once a year at least. I don't think there's a "season" for them...oh, I hear they taste good pan-seared with Old Bay! LOL...just kidding!

I, too, go to DVC HH once a year and I have never seen any "palmetto bugs." Believe me, I look. Hope I don't break the charm.

The difference between a NY Roach and a Palmetto Bug is that the Palmetto's are a lot easier to kill. Otherwise...a roach is a roach is a roach. Also I think Palmettos are more outdoor bugs than in. I've been learning about them since I relocated down here! I didn't realize they were a problem in Georgia because apparently my Mom had stayed on top of all the necessary treatment without saying anything to us. Now its my job to figure out the balance between keeping them at bay but not poisoning myself. Disney is a past master at insect management (so much so that when I first went there it took a while for us to realize the pleasant swamp sounds at Dixie Landings were electronic in nature). I wouldn't interpret the presence of Palmettos as evidence that the maintenance is "unclean" rather its more they aren't as good at killing off these insects as Disney. They sure are scary though!
