Need help finding thin winter jacket

Can someone help me find a thin winter jacket. It is a fight every morning for DD who is 13 to wear a coat of any kind other than a lightweight fleece she can put in her book bag (I told her she supposed to be wearing it). She has to wait for the bus and when she gets on to come home they walk from the Middle School to the HS across a field. Today the high was 27 with a windchill of -5 below!!!

What about a Wool Pea Coat? They are thinner. My DD15 sure likes hers and claims that it is warm.

Have the same problem with my middle-schooler. It seems that winter coats are not stylish... we took the middle ground and she wears an Aeropostale heavy jacket that is fur-lined. The jacket is actually quite warm even on cold days. I bought the jacket on sale for somewhere around $20 last year. HTH!

Lands' End has some really great thin jackets. Take a look at the Dory jacket. I got mine yesterday. It's not bulky at all. Old Navy also has Sherpa lined hoodies. I bought one for my son because he refuses to wear a coat.

Ugh! If anyone finds a good solution to this, I am interested in it too. In my town, this issue has less to do with style and everything to do with the fact that our High School has half lockers that barely fit books, nevermind winter coats and boots. This infuriates me. We have a fairly new high school with room for the 2700 kids who attend (grades 10-12), yet some idiot who planned this multi-millon dollar school totally skimped on space for all these kids to store their stuff. The staff will not allow kids to wear their coats/bring their coats to classes either. It was-2 here this morning, and -25 with the windchill. My 16 y.o. went to the bus stop in his sweatshirt, along with the rest of the kids in the neighborhood. We get oodles of snow here in MN, and there is no way my child can wear boots to school because there is NO space for him to store them.

Same problem there. DS9 does not like the heavy coats. He says they are too puffy and we are not getting the true puffy coats. His teacher has even been getting on him for not having a coat on but I am tired of fighting about it. He usually wears a sweatshirt or a sweatjacket. I dont think it is warm enough but dont know what else to try.

My dd loves her Northface Nupste jacket. It's down but not bulky at all. They aren't cheap but she says it's really warm-she walks a mile to school. She wears a girls XL-she's about 5'5" and 110 lbs and it fits her fine.

My kids both have Land's End fleece hooded jackets that are super soft and thin enough to stuff in a backpack, but they are still warm and snuggly. No need for wool or down jackets here, and they want something that is more like a sweatshirt than a coat. It was 35 here this morning, and they were both glad to have them!

She has a peacoat she wears to church sometimes, never to school! I got her the padding fur hoodie at Aerostaple, but she wears it all day! The teachers probably think she has no clothes...one jacket and no winter coat! I will see if she likes the Northface or Lands End.

I'm glad I'm not the only mother with this problem. Both my boys refuse to wear a coat. The 11 yr old has been wearing a thin Nike pullover as a jacket. I tell him all the kids are going to think he only has 1 shirt. He said he might wear a Holister jacket so off we go to the Mall. They do not have xs in jackets and the small is way too big.

I pulled the 8 yr old's heavy coat out of the closet the other day because he was going to the Christmas parade with a friend. Told him if he wanted to go he had to wear it. I'm cleaning out the pockets and what do i find but a dead minnow. It has been in the pocket since last winter when they went fishing. It was all dried out and crumbled in my hand. I can't believe it did not stink up the closet!! Little boys are driving me nuts !!!!!

I can relate, I hated wearing a coat! There are some fuzzy lined hoodies at Old Navy and Target if all else fails, but how about a North Face jacket? They're warm, thin, and I see a lot of the "cool" High Schoolers wearing them here.

Probably not ideal for girls but for boys/men I bought my DS13 a sherpa lined zip up hooded fleece at KMart in the Men's department and it's nice and warm.

Lands End has one, and Eddie Bauer has a down one that they call a sweater, though it is really a jacket; that one is so scrunchy that it fits into a pouch. Those are both available in mens and womens sizes.

For boys who hate coats, I've noticed over the years that a vest is often a good alternative. It keeps the core warm and still allows really good freedom of movement.

I'm lucky this way, my kid HATES to be cold. He had to walk home 8 blocks yesterday in 22F weather and groused about it no end, even though he was wearing two shirts, a double-layer system parka with a face-sheilding hood, fleece gloves, and longjohns under his uniform pants.

I usually like to wear my fleece sweater and a down vest. The women's vests aren't as puffy and a good one, paired with a sweater or fleece hoodie, will keep her warm.

Welcome to the club! Issue here is half that "noone wears them" and half that the lockers are so small and they are not allowed to have them in school so I do feel for her there. I have put my foot down though and said just shove it in the bottome of the locer, if it gets wrinkled so be it, better then freezing. This morning at bus time our windchill was below zero, no way she's going out without a coat. The next battle will be waterproof boots...one battle at a time.

Another vote for Lands End. My kids like them since they aren't too bulky to fit in their car seats. I imagine they would have something thin yet warm in the bigger sizes too.

Another mom with the same problem here. He loves fleece lined hoodies, and I found a nice thin Gap snowboarders coat - although now he is giving me an issue with wearing that, because he tells me last year a 5th grader told him it looks like a girls coat

DD11 has a North Face Apex Bionic, got a womens x-small (she's 53.5 inches and 75lbs) it's a little big but it was the one she liked best. She hates hoods on jackets and this one has no hood. It's warm enough for in the mid 20s. Nice and thin. They also have a mens and childrens version.

I spend a lot of time on college campuses for work, and around here at least, funky rubber rainboots are seriously trendy with undergrad girls. Last week on my walk from the parking lot to the library I saw, among other types, rainbow peace signs, zebra stripes, hot pink on black polka dots, and outsized peacock feather designs, plus nearly every solid color in the spectrum. You can buy sherpa boot liners for them, and they stay very warm that way.
