I don't know if this helps, but we just returned from the AKL and loved our room (number 2573). It had two queen beds, was smack dab in front of a watering hole, and at perfect "eye level" with the animals. We also liked being on that level because when the CMs cruise around the savannah picking up droppings, etc... it is easy to catch their attention and ask them questions about the animals (which we did on several occasions and found everyone to be very informed/helpful). We had a stroller, so we did have to deal with the elevator, but it truly was a minor additional step (the resort was full, but we never waited more than a few moments for an elevator). If you are stroller and/or wheelchair free, you can avoid the elevator by just walking to the end of the lobby and utilizing the short flight of steps... bam! your on level 2.
Next time I might try a higher floor to get the "bird's eye view", but you really could see across the savannah from our vantage point (under the tree canopy line), so we didn't miss any animals.
Hope this information is helpful!
