DH and I are in the process of doing a little landscaping in the backyard. Here's a picture of the area - it's very small. These aren't our dogs, by the way, it's a picture I took of the space when we were thinking about buying the house. =)

We took that awful chain-link mish-mashy fence up and put in a wood one with a gate. I want to put bushes on either side of the gate, so you can see they will have to be small bushes. But I want something that flowers or at least has really pretty foliage. I would have loved to have lilacs, but they would get too large I'm afraid.

I know next to nothing about gardening, so your thoughts would be much appreciated! I live in Iowa if that helps at all. I believe I'm in Zone 5, but just barely (almost in zone 4).

TIA!! =)

How about a butterfly bush?
Looks like the area gets a decent amount of sun...
