Need a good novel that has NOT been made into a movie

"Ender's Game" is my number two book I wish they'd make into a movie. My number one book that needs to be made into a movie is "His Majesty's Dragon" (currently optioned). After that comes just about anything by Neil Gaiman (except Coraline, of course).

Gosh, I never realized, but most of my favorite books have been made into movies at some point.

Yes, my DD will be a freshman in high school, she just turned 14.

Thanks for all of the suggestions so far.

I think The Book Thief would be an excellent choice for someone heading into high school.

This book is awesome. My 15 year old just read it for her summer reading program and couldn't put it down.

Also Beloved by Toni Morrison.

Water for Elephants...I loved it....isn't there some sex stuff in there though that might not be age appropriate? I can't remember for sure but I seem to remember reading it and thinking that. I might be thinking of Wicked though. That's definitely not a kids book.

Yes, there was some sex stuff in that. I immediately thought of the part when the stripper and her friend try to seduce him...or her "dance." Wicked is filled with crazy sexy stuff...much worse than Water for Elephants!

Redlight- Thought so, just too lazy to search! I am sure the book is better (they almost always are) and still worth the read!

Austenland- It's a story of a woman who is obsessed with Austen and gets sent to a kind of Austen fantasy camp. It's a fun read.

Uglies (Scott Westerfield) is an amazing book. I hope they don't make it into a movie. It is just one of those books that is just not meant to be a movie!

Twisted (Laurie Halse Anderson) is also an amazing book! It's crime prevention, birth control, and under-age drinking prevention all rolled into one. Oh, and it's entertaining too! It doesn't go too far. Not detailed, and your kid has probably heard (maybe even said) worse at school. It's very very realistic, funny, suspenseful, it's just all around fantastic.

The Westing Game (Eleanor Raskin), if you want something completely non-objectionable, is amazing too.

Someone else may have seconded this but if not, I will. It's an excellent young adult book and just as good for adults. A moving and thought provoking work.

Water for Elephants was also very good. :thumbsup2

I hated Catcher in the Rye (I couldnt get thru all the F words!)

I think its really a cop out by a teacher to put that clause in - like a book Herman Wouk Winds of War - was made into a movie - but a HORRIBLE movie so far from the book!

How about A Separate Peace? by John Knowles

Abarat by Clive Barker. It's my favourite long novel of all-time. I love it so much that my copy is actually falling apart. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare takes second on that list. Her series is phenomenal and this is the first book.

Something by Tamora Pierce would probably be really good, too. She's an excellent author.

I'm a recently graduated HS senior, so HS level books are my forté.

True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi is an excellent book, though it might be below the 200 mark.

Beloved was made into a movie with Oprah. It was horrible.

I also hated catcher in the rye, the main character wasn't at all likable.

I really liked True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle.

I'm another who wasn't into the whininess of Holden Cauffield. No one cares that you just found out the world is full of phoneys. Maybe it's more of a "guy" book.

I nejoyed the Gemma Doyle trilogy. The first book is A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray. They are set in Victorian England at a boarding/finishing school for young ladies and deal with lots of social and ethical issues and have some mystery, magic, and love thrown in and completely age appropriate for a 14 y/o and no movies....yet.

Just came back from the library with my DD -

Kiki Strike - by Kristen Miller - DD says this book is about a girl, they get into the underground of New York, and somehow she is Anastasia the Russian Princess (its 300 pages long - and DD doesnt know how to summarize!! DD loves the Twilight Books, is an avid reader - she is re reading this book - she said to tell you that the website needs adobe flash to play - its really good)

She has several other books - most of the Meg Cabot 1 800 where are you series (again re reads about 264 pages each)

Our neighbor is a 9th grade English teacher and always asks for DD opinion for her book lists - (Last summer it was Twilight before it became a movie we were wondering how appropriate it was - so dd read it for us!!)
