We are staying at Port Orleans Riverside and will be taking a taxi to the nearest grocery store to buy some stuff to keep there. What is the closest store and what are your suggestions for a taxi to get there?

You could take the boat to Downtown Disney and then a cab for around $13 to Walmart Super Center. There are alot of grocery in that Walmart. We did this and saved a few $$. We took a cab directly back to the resort for around $24 (POFQ). That was for 4 people...

CLOSEST supermarket to Downtown Disney, though (and so to POR) would be Goodings, at the Crossroads Shopping Center at the opposite end of Hotel Plaza Boulevard from DTD. It's about a mile, if the OP wanted to walk, but that does involve crossing a couple of wide, BUSY streets.

But a cab from DTD to Goodings would be much less than $13, and back to POR would cost less than $24.

Yes, I realize Goodings' prices are higher than Super Walmart - but balance that against the difference in transportation prices. The OP would have to be buying a LOT of groceries to make a cab ride to SW cost-effective.

In fact, for $17 service charge, www.wegoshop will shop at the OP's choice of one store and deliver the groceries to POR; $12 on a $50 minimum order, www.gardengrocer.com will do the same, but from a predetermined store with predetermined prices.

Both companies get good reviews on even subjective items like produce, and either service charge is cheaper than the total cab fare would be.

i would go with the delivery service there are no cabs standing when you come out of either store and it would cost plently to have the cab wait for you while you shop

There's also a Publix and a Winn-Dixie just off of Disney property, and they're both near the Goodings.

I'd also suggest a delivery service. Cost will be comparable, but much less hassle.

I don't doubt you in the least; this isn't a skeptical response in any way: Where's the Publix? I've found the Winn Dixie (by the way, if the OP is interested, it's about a mile beyond/to the left of Goodings - I'd tell you in which direction, but I can only do that by the sun,,, and I'm not standing on 535 right now plus, yeah, I know it's dark out ;)). But I'm not impressed with the lack of variety - I'd rather shop at Publix!

We made a trip from SSR to Winn Dixie for $16 each way with tip. This was a van and he did not wait but gave us a card and the service desk at Winn Dixie called for us. We got several bags of groceries which the driver helped us with so there was some extra tip in there. I found the Winn Dixie very good except for the bakery, I like Gooding's better or that.

Awesome! We are going to go with one of the delivery services. Why shop when someone can go shop for you for less than the taxi ride there and back!
