NDR: Travel trailer storm prep

So, this is the first time for us to have a tt during hurricane season. Do you guys that have tt and live in hurricane, or tropical storm areas, have any suggestions or tips for the camper to eep it safe? We're filling the water tank for fresh water access and plan on filling our reserve containers we used for other camp outings. Do you strap the tt down like you would a mobile home?? At a loss! If it needs to be strapped, I need to do it now because the husband is leaving on a work trip soon! I can be the rest done on my own. Thanks for the help!

My first thought is be sure to have good wheel chocks. That will keep it from rolling.

We always just pull ours out of way from trees. And maybe left them hooked to trucks, but they are all 5th wheels. Never had a problem.

I would most certainly "Button it up" by closing all the slides, awnings, etc... Anything loose should be closed and locked. Filing the water tank isn't a bad idea either. Not sure I'd leave it connected to the truck. Typically the TT's have a larger profile for wind to take them then the truck would. If the wind is going to take the travel trailer, it's likely that it wouldn't take the truck (lower profile, heavier by comparison to size) but if it's connected to the TT, it could facilitate it going. If the wind is that strong, not that you want to loose the TT, but I'd just be happy that me and the family were otherwise safe.

I would also make sure the Stabilizers are down. Might even be worth it to somehow "Lower" the TT as much as possible. I agree with Denise.... wheel chocks would be a must as well..

In all cases, please be safe. Don't risk your life for things like property. Property can be replaced... Life, not quite the same.

If the risk of being in a direct hit of the storm is significant, strapping is a good idea. If you can't do it yourself there are mobile home service companies that will do it for you. I did my own once at Fenwick Island, Delaware because the service company wanted $500. I bought 4 anchors and a roll of steel strapping for about $100. Lucky for me the ground was sandy and I was able to screw in the anchors without renting an auger. It took all day, though.

We live in Central Fl and except for 2004 when we took a direct hit three times, we have been pretty lucky. You have plenty of warning with a TS or Hurricane to prepare. Our plan is just to shut every thing up, make sure she is loaded heavy (all the camping gear, fill the water tanks, plus maybe a few extra pounds from whatever we have lying around) and hook her to the truck....and pray!
