We are flying into Sanford and renting a car from National which I just discovered is not on site. Do they have trams/shuttles to take you to National? How quick and easy is it? Should I scrap that ressie and make it with one on site at Sanford? We have a full size for a week-169 taxes and fees included.

Ive had no past experience at Sanford because no airlines that fly from Detroit fly there. Generally speaking, most airport rental car shuttles run somewhere around every 10 to 20 minutes which makes an easier departure when you fly out of Orlando. So to solve your question, Yes, I would keep that reservation

Just an FYI - National is on-site at Sanford - we used them in November. They share space with Alamo. They just do not have a counter inside the terminal. When you walk out of the baggage claim area - you go right - and you can not miss the National/Alamo kiosk and parking area right in the drop off area. It's only about a hundred yards from the door! The only issue we had was that the office closes at 5 pm, and we had a late departing flight - no problem - we did all paperwork at pickup, and then just left the keys, with a copy of the agreement in the door (they have a drop area).
