Nassau Straw Market

Last time I was in the Straw Market was in 1984...DD stayed home in NY, but upstate with my DSis and DBnlaw.....we got her a beautiful straw doll, it was made while we were standing there and they incorporated her name on the skirt! Also bought her a beautiful "Bahama Mama" outfit...she wore it many times throughout that summer! Didn't haggle much, didn't know we should or could....but I'm thinking this time around in February...I'll haggle, DD is now 24 and that straw doll and outfit will cost more now than it did then, and maybe I can get it for the price I paid in 1984!

I own a gift store and saw some of the very same straw bags I sell in the straw market! The majority of the bags are not made by the ladies you see there. They may personalize them but I know the bags I sell are made in China and these were the EXACT same bags and they were more expensive than my store. We couldn't believe it. It made of very leary of anything in the market. My DS did have fun buying a necklace and it was a good cultural experience but don't expect to find much hand made in the Bahamas. I also noticed the same product in booth after booth. If you see something you like and you can't get it for the price you want don't worry you'll see it again and you may get it for the price you want the second or third time. You can go down one isle and pretty much see everything the market has to offer.
