It started, ironically, on Election Day. There would be a thundering BOOM in the middle of the night and the ground would shake in the north side of Richmond. It was always happening around midnight.

Well, today it has happened 3 times - twice in the middle of the day! Nobody has any idea what is going on. It has been described as some as coming from the ground as the ground shakes. They haven't reported any seismic activity of any great scale in that area though.

Here is the latest story - http://www.nbc12.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WWBT/MGArticle/WBT_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031779248261

I have to say.. I am darn glad I live on the other side of the city! This would scare me. With all the excess rain we have had and all the sink holes that developed when we were hit with Gaston - I would be terrified something was going on underground that would cause a disasterous sink hole.

Have you ever heard of anything like this happening? What caused it?

Are you within 20 or so miles of a military base?

I just saw the report on Channel 12. Very strange. I used to live in the Northwest part of Henrico County, so I'm glad I don't live there any more! I have a friend who lives in Glen Allen - I'll have to ask her if she's heard the booms.

I wonder if that area is somehow over the flight path for one of the military bases in the Tidewater area?

Chad, that's from something else in 2001, so it doesn't explain this now.

If you got to mapquest.com and search for the intersection of Goochland and Palmyra in Richmond, VA, you'll see a map of the area of the booms. It's an urban residential area fairly near an interstate highway and a train yard.

There are military bases in the area, the closest being the Defense Supply Center probably 10-15 miles away. Fort Lee and Fort Hill are probably 30 miles at least away from this area, along with many others in the Norfolk area 80 miles away.

Weird, to say the least.

The sounds aren't making it up this way.

We were hearing loud booms all last week, I just assumed it was Quantico. Maybe not.

Probably coming from some sort of military installation. I used to live less than a mile for a Defense Supply Center and every now and then we would get unexplainable noises, low-flying jets, sonic booms.

If it were military, I'm sure they would have solved it by now. I remember in Lexington, VA, we got fighter jets flying overhead every now and again, making booms. The first time I heard it I was in the shower in the dorms - thought everything was going to fall down while I was nekkid! But, I'm sure someone from the government would have thought to ask if Langley was flying something over there by now!

We have that almost daily here and we have no idea what it is. Happens all the time. We've lived here for 3 years and it has always happened. We do not live near a military base.

They might know what it is. That doesn't mean they are going to tell you. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but the government does keep a lot of things 'private'.

Just so someone doesn't misunderstand what the above can imply, I wanted to note the following. There are no runways at either DSCP (Philly) or DSCR (Richmond) and for that matter, the nearest airports are at least 10 miles away. DSCC (Columbus) has the nearest airport of the three, with it being a neighboroing property. I'm not sure you can correlate the unexplainable noises or jets to any of centers.

We have noises similar to that, but it is usually during the day. Sometimes local cities try and clear out annoying birds (starlings, blackbirds, etc.......). It happens alot in parts of KY since we are directly in the migration pattern South.

You're right, there are no runways at the Defense Center in Philly. It's not large enough, the only things I ever saw land there were helicopters. We still got low-flying planes and sonic booms occasionally- I lived in that area for over 25 years. And as far as I know my house was not in any flight paths, we were no where near Willow Grove AFB. It was not a regular occurance, but I remember quite a few instances, including one military jet flying so low my parents and I could see the pilot's features in broad daylight. I was a teenager and I remember it vividly. My husband grew up within blocks of a commerical airport and never saw anything like that- and his home WAS in the flight paths.
