Mysterious "BOOMS" heard around the Richmond VA area - Todays article - new news pg.3

They might know what it is. That doesn't mean they are going to tell you. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but the government does keep a lot of things 'private'.

Yeah, but as far as I can recall, the flight testing stuff is all done on the West Coast. (Our roommate during one of DH's flight training phases wanted to get into flight testing, so I heard more than I wanted to about it!) So if it were a regular jet causing the booms - like the ones from Langley - I'm sure someone would have asked and have been told "Oh, yeah, we're altered a flight path" or something to that effect.

I live in NW Henrico County and haven't heard a thing!

The booms are being heard in NW Richmond, not NW Henrico.

The areas that this is happening in is very urban and the booms are only felt in a very small section - just a few blocks. It's not like it's something that someone a mile away might hear.

They have said that they have looked into meteors, quarries (there are none in the area), businesses that might be blasting, military flights or testing, etc. and nothing is making sense.

Another scary part of it is, the boom is being described as coming from beneath the ground  That is what is scaring me to think that the excess rain we had (and it was bad this year - did millions of dollars, if not a billion dollars of damage) is causing underground caverns or the like to cave in a bit at a time and the boom heard is layers of soil collapsing.

The original area is about 3 miles from where I work. Yesterday, for the first time, the booming sound moved. Now it is being felt in the "Fan" area of Richmond. Of course now it's being felt a few blocks from where I work. *sigh*

Funny thing - they had a committee meeting yesterday to discuss what is going on, and guess what? Yep - BOOM!

Here is a link to the latest news about it. Why do I get the feeling that this is a disaster/something bad was happening in a town yet the officials kept it secret from the citizens/ movie of the week in the making??

KABOOM!!! LOL!

Don't worry - Richmond now has Doug Wilder on the job and he'll figure out what is happening - LOL!! (I don't mean this as a slam against him either - I actually like him. I hope he whips that darn Richmond city council into shape!)

LOL Izzy!

I was actually joking with Matthew that the booms were good old ex mayor-to-be Rudy stomping his feet and yelling DARN DARN DARN like Herman Munster because he lost. :p

I hope that whatever the 'boom' is, it will turn out harmless.
Could you please let us know what turns up? :wave2:

Anybody remember the Superman episode where the little men came up to the surface from way down under?

They're coming baaaack......:earseek:

Williamsburg has that base too. I can't remember what it's called. It's not Langley, but it's CIA or something!:earseek: Maybe they are doing something top secret.

Or....it may be something other worldly, like meteors causing sonic booms.....???:earseek:

You said this wasn't showing up on seismometers? Collapsing soil/roof/etc in caverns should show up on seismometers easily.

More news about the BOOMS! Apparently they are spreading and now are being felt in Indiana and Canada!

Today's article - includes more detail

Rajah - in this article it was mentioned that shallow tremors like manmade caverns or the like falling in would be too shallow for a seisometer to pick up - especially since to my knowledge, they haven't brought one in to the effected area yet. They did say that seismology equipment that is more sensitive to shallow seismic tremors is on it's way.

At least I wasn't the only one with the speculation on stratas collapsing. Hopefully that isn't it because we already took too big of a hit in August from Gaston wiping out roads with sink holes.

Thank goodness the tremors haven't been felt in the area of town that I live in. It's been concentrated on the other side of the James River. I would be a nervous wreck all day! Of course, I get to work near Boom central and from what I hear, it's getting closer by the day. :hyper: <----- me at work today ;)

This just heard on the radio!

A lady in the area that is effected by the booms reported a half inch gap where her wall seperated from the floor in her living room. Sounds like sinkholes forming to me.

Anyone from Fort Wayne, Indiana? Apparently they've experienced something similar.

Yup. Still going on, too. I haven't heard them, but they are big news here. (Really the only news here. ) I only live about 3 miles from where the noises are being heard, and I have been right at "ground zero" (Yes, that is what authorities are calling it) during reported "booms" and still haven't heard anything. Not saying they aren't real. It is strange that so many reports are coming in (we actually have a hotline for this problem) yet nobody seems to know (or will admit) to what it is. This has been going on since late August. There was a hiatus, but it is back again. http://www.wane.com/Global/story.asp?S=2546862&nav=0RYbSy3m

Here is another interesting (and somewhat humorous) link.

oh no you guys! so what now? That sounds awful to me. What do "those in the know" suggest people do? I hope it doesn't get too bad.

ML -- that does make a difference. If they've just been checking with long-distance seismometers, no it wouldn't be picked up. I didn't realize they hadn't brought in a local one yet.

I posted on page one we experience it all the time. I am in Indiana as well but not Fort Wayne. I'm just NE of Indianapolis. We hear/feel them almost daily for 3 years. At first I assumed they were blasting around here but 3 years later? Now I'm curious what it could be.

When they happen here, you hear a big boom then the house rumbles. In fact, we had an earthquake here a few years ago and at first I thought it was just another "boom" but it lasted longer. ;)
