I just read that there is a new tropical storm forming! Could hit the US next week? Please reassure me I wont be in Disney during a huge, scary storm! Anyone have any info? I am sooooo frightened of storms especially after seeing the horror or Katrina. :guilty: SOmeone say something to reassure me!

It's all over for this year.
Actually there is a tropical storm Wilma, but the 10-day forecast for Orlando on weather.com show no more than 30% chance of precipitation.
Hope you feel better!

You should be fine. It doesn't appear like it is going to be track anywhere close to Florida.

Thanks. It is irrational but my fear of storms is terrible. Especially flying during one. I should probably stop watching LOST until after the trip.
I hope you are right!

Florida is still on alert as far as Wilma is concerned. If the weather is bad chances are your flight will be cancelled. Just keep watching, that is all you can do at this point.

just try to relax and skip both lost and the weather channel for awhile!

a note about big scary storms while at disney... we were in disney for hurricane frances in '04 and while there were some bad winds and we were asked to stay inside, it was not scary at all... we felt incredibly safe and were well cared for... bear in mind, disney is as much or more concerned about your safety than you are!

We were in Disney during Charley, last year, and except for closing the parks early on the day it blew through, park schedules were normal.

We felt very safe in the Disney resort during the hurricane. We even went outside and took a few pictures of the wind and the rain.

I'm sure it would have been much scarier if we were in a house rather than a concrete block resort hotel. All around, in Orlando, there were power failures and other problems but Disney has it's own power and almost all of it's underground so falling trees can't cause problems.

Some people were actually swimming in the pools!! Even though Disney security kept coming by and telling them to get back inside!!

Disney is REALLY well organized for handling hurricanes. At POP, they are even tie-downs built into the ground for the bigger trees!

If you didn't know that a hurricane had come through, you'd have sworn that it detoured around Disney rather than right over it!!

I don't think the 10 weather.com forcast takes into consideration the possible storm track. The 10 day forcast assumes Wilma is not a factor, but it might be. I think at this point, everything I've seen, it's about 50/50. We'll just have to watch!

Oh great!!!! I am driving from NJ, to leave on Thursday to arrive Friday. I don't fear the actual hurricane as much as the effect on infrastructure - mainly gas running out and huge traffic jams from evacuations/or people fleeing inland. Currently these models are indicating the hurricane will hit Sunday in Florida, so if true it should be a real panicked mess by Friday!!!

I am now considering leaving late Wednesday and arrive in Orlando late Thursday, maybe making the drive easier. Sigh. And I planned a late October trip just to avoid the hurricane season. :( :(

I hate to say it, but this is the reason we only go to Florida from Thanksgiving to May.

Orlando is pretty far inland. It would have to be a *ultra major* hurricane to cause that kind of damage in Orlando.

Really shouldn't be a problem. Might get some rain or storms, but that really isn't unusual any given day in that area. But if you are that concerned, you can track the storm path and predictions at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/. I love this site. You can get the public advisory updates, strike probabilities and everything. I have family all over different parts of Florida, and this is how I keep track of whether I have to be concerned for them or not.

Hope you have a great trip! Wish I could be there!!!

Living in Michigan I am clueless when it comes to weather like this. We fly in to MCO on Sat late afternoon. When and why do they cancel flights, how bad does it have to get??? Im mean like for rain and wind we should be okay right?? What happens when they do cancel flights, what next?? We have two DD's 4 and 2 so any flight problems will not go over well. Should I worry???? UUUGGHH!!!!

We're in the Ann Arbor area now, but used to live in Southeast Florida. They'll close the airport when the winds get too high for the planes to land. They'll may also close the airport because the employees need to take the time to secure their own houses. It will most likely end up happening the day before the hurricane hits, and then they'll re-open after it has passed through and the damage, (if any) has been assessed, and the airport deemed to be safe and ready to resume operations. I don't have any official knowledge, however. this is just what I observed from living there. Many times, the storm tracks a different way, so predictions for Sunday afternoon could be incorrect. That's why you need to keep watching. For now, I'd carry on with my plans as though the storm will go a different way or won't be severe enough to worry about, but I'd call my airline and check on their polilcy ahead of time, in case all flights have to be cancelled. You'll be ahead of the game by knowing what the procedure for re-booking is.

Last year, there were 4 hurricanes between the time we booked & the time we arrived. I was biting my nails too! We got there in October right after the 4th hurricane had ended, and the weather was great. It's very rare that a hurricane will pass through Orlando (last year was a freak coincidence). Even if you do get some rain (which is extremely common there), you will still enjoy Disney. Just bring your parka and your umbrella & have a blast!
