I have been reading about all the concerns about the WDW germs. My only H1N1 concern is my youngest daughter who has Asthma type symptoms when she gets an cold.

So I thought I would share my plan in case anyone else was looking for suggestions. I am not a total health freak, but I do believe in trying natural alternatives. For the last several years I have been using high quality essential oils. I use them for sleep, congestion, motion sickness, tummy aches, coughs, colds, flu.. you name it.

I have started building up our immune systems, trip is less than a week away, nebulizing the house on a daily bases with essential oils that kills airborne germs and also build the immune system.

I plan on bringing with me the nebulizer and some germ killing oils and run that for a few hours to kill the germs in the hotel room before we occupy the room. We plan on dropping the luggage and then heading our for a meal and looking at some of the resort decorations. That will give the oils a few hours to kill the germs. Not much I can do at the parks beside bring tons of wipes and lotion. But hopefully between building up some immunity before hand and killing germs in the room I hope we come home healthy. I plan on running the nebulizer for a few hours when we return from the parks as well.

Just thought I would share my plan of action...

Do these oils have a scent? If so, I think it isn't the best idea to use it in the hotel room. Think of the guests after you. What if they have an allergy to one of the oils? That's not really fair. I think it's great that you have found something that works for you in your home, but I don't think a hotel is the right place to be using a nebulizer that will release anything into the air that the hotel doesn't know about...could get into the ventilation and affect others as well.

The resort might liken that to smoking in the room...and might charge you a "cleaning fee" after you leave.

Agree with this. There are some scents that will give me an instant headache and others that will make me wheeze and have trouble breathing.

You are free to believe what ever you want but please consider that if there was such a "miracle" oil like you are using that actually killed germs that easily why isn't it being used by public places and airlines? Do some actual scientific research into theories like this before believing whole heartedly. People make lots of money and have since time began on miraculous cures like this. Ever hear of snake oil salesmen?

there are some oils such as Tea Tree oil that have been shown to have anti fungal and some antibacterial uses.
your best bet is to just wipe down the remote, doorknobs, handles etc with clorox wipes, or if you want to go natural try making your own wipes with tea tree oil.

there won't be anything in the air that will cause you to get the flu unless someone is in there coughing :)
whatever is coughed up before you arrive is on the surfaces, so wiping them down is your best bet.

I agree. My DS5 has asthma and I would not wants him staying in a hotel room where someone had been using any type of 'homemade' disinfectant. It would completely ruin our trip if his asthma really started to act up.

OP, please consider using some commonly accepted germ killers in your room, such as Lysol. Think of the people who might be in that room after you.

I plan on washing my hands thoroughly, and keeping them away from my face as much as possible.

I agree with others. Those oils may have a scent that doesn't bother you but can be awful to people that are very sensitive to odors and are susceptible to migraines.

Just btw, H1N1 and other flu is a virus, which I don't think would be affected by anti-fungals and anti-bacterials.

I agree about not using scents for the reasons already mentioned.

Also, if these oils claim to kill germs but also build up your immune system, someone is messing with you - exposure to germs is how your immune system gets built up!

LOL, i do know that h1n1 and other flu strains are a virus ;)
but there are other germs to worry about ( if you want to worry ) in a hotel room besides flu viruses :)

I just give every thing a quick swipe with the wipes, spray the tub with lysol and be done with it.

I don't think this is a good idea - nor is it fair to other guests who have various allergies.. If this is the only way that you feel safe making this trip, maybe you could consider going at another time? :goodvibes

Where are you staying? Do you really think that it is necessary to pack all of that stuff up and then use it at the resort? Seems to me if you boost your immune system before the trip and us simple precautions while there you should be fine.

Ok I find this funny as I know absolutely nothing about the oils the OP wishes to use and whether or not they are scented...but I did read the suggestions to use Lysol instead. That is one scent that sets my allergies right off.

That said I don't think anyone can worry about what the person before them has done or what effect the scent will have on the person after them will have. I have entered hotel rooms and had to move due to scent (primarily carpet cleaning scents) and that is just the way it is.

Yes but the rooms share ventilation. So if she runs the nebulizer it could filter the sent of the oil into the other rooms, just like someone smoking in a room can filter into another room.

Having grown up in a household with a SEVERE asthmatic who also has SEVERE allergies I am more sensitive to Asthma and allergies than the average person. Which is exactly why I choose to use essential oils.

Allergies to airborne essential oils is uncommon.. where as allergies to let's say... the detergent used to shampoo carpets, or the chemicals used to clean draperies.. and your worried about what someone uses to clean the air in the room? I suppose your going to ban families who bring in pet dander? Or the lady who used the room before you that used a gallon of perfume.

Normally I do not give flamed responses the time of day.. but in this case I am going to.. because some of these responses had me rolling on the floor.. especailly the cleaning comment. I did not realize that I stated I was going to have a Crisco party and smear the room with oil ? Oh wait.. the air ventilation system... do you really believe that hotel has a quality ventilation system and that they use quality filters in the vacum cleaners?

Use Lysol !!! Sure...let's use the one spray that sets off many people. More people are allergic to Lysol and bleach than you think! Not only that but Lysol will ruin a surface. If you don't believe me.. ask anyone working in an office how Lysol has ruined the displays on their phones !

Maybe instead of jumping to conclusions you should research the scientific data before responding. HA.. that was a good one too !

I'm not going to flame you as I have serious chemical allergies as well. But, just to let you know, many of us are very bothered my essential oils. They can still set off allergies. BTDT many times. Don't get me started on eucalyptus or lavender - I almost had to go to the emergency room last time somone decided that these oils were 'essential' to their environment. They are definitely not essential to my respiratory system! I would encourage that you don't use any scents at all, as that is not your home.

I can see how you were trying to us a more 'friendly' system than spraying Lysol, but most any types of scents send me into a tailspin. Yes, even natural ones...

I wish you and your family good health, Tiger
