This thread is totally my favorite. I had so much fun today.
Ok, and whether it is ethical or not, whether it is legal or not, and whether it is "sad and pathetic" or not, the fact remains that people are going to check if you have a MySpace/Facebook page when you apply for a job, scholarship, student group - and make judgements based on you for what you have on that page. You have chosen to put that image out there, you should be willing to deal with the consequences.
And yes, people are also going to judge you based on what you wear to the interview. And if I have two excellent applicants but only one position, and they have great references, great applications, great interviews - I'm going to have to make a decision. And yes, that decision may be because one wore business clothes to the meeting, while the other arrived in her flipflops and a t-shirt. Because I feel that the applicant who took the time to dress nicely cares more about the interview, and therefore will care more about the job. Could I be totally wrong? Sure, it's happened before.
And you know what - I'm not going to tell the flipflopped candidate that the reason she was not hired was because of her clothing. Or because she has stripper pictures on MySpace. Or because she chewed gum. So really, she's going to have a hard time bringing a discrimination lawsuit against me.
