My sad trip report . . .

I'm so bummed. I spent over a year planning our vacation for my family of 6, and it did not go as planned. After spending one wonderful day at MK (10-4), my ds started running fever. The next day we took him to the urgent care clinic, and he tested positive for the flu. By that evening my oldest son was running fever too. During the night my youngest two kids started running fever as well. Dh and I decided it'd be best for our kids to be home, so we left early in the morning to make the long drive home. My kids were heartbroken to say the least. (Even now over a week later, the older kids have a hard time talking about Disney without tearing up.) The day we arrived home dh and I got the flu too. I know how lucky we are that everyone is okay now. Of course, everyone's health is most important. But, I'm depressed about the vacation that wasn't! We missed out on so much, and thinking about all that $$ down the drain makes me sick! Thank goodness for DIS, because at the time I was able to get some great advice on upgrading to non-expiration tickets.

Our day at MK was great. Yes, it was hot, and there seemed to be a lot of people. However, the lines were short! We waited only 10-15 minutes for most things. The longest line we waited for was BTMR and that was only 30 minutes. We were able to do almost everything in 1 day that I had planned for 2. In my head, I imagine that the whole week would have been like this one day- hot but manageable weather and low crowds. Now, we're looking at possibly going back in July. Depending on finances, I don't know if it will be July 2010 or 11 (which is waaaaay to far away!). I looked at crowd calendars for July and it makes me want to cry. Solid 9's for the week we're considering. Sigh. I won't even get started on what the weather will be like in July.

Please don't flame me. I'm really just venting and so disappointed with the way the our vacation turned out. :sad1:

How awful! I feel so bad for you! I thought you were going to talk about how hot it was or how long the lines were. What an awful thing to be sick with the flu at Disney! Those poor kids! I hope you get to go again soon. Were you able to get a refund from your resort? How does Disney handle that situation?

Well, I certainly don't see any reason why you'd get flamed. :confused3 That is really about the saddest trip report I ever read. :sad1:

I know you said you got your tickets upgraded to non-exp. Was Disney able to give you any type of credit on your rooms for your next trip? Just wondering if there's anything they could do.

I hate the thought of July myself, but I was reading a thread this morning talking about how nice June is the second school lets out. I'm sure it's hot for my taste then, but probably no more so than last week was. As far as crowds, you can really do so much with planning.

So sorry this happened to your family, but I'm glad you're all okay.

That is a shame but as you said everyones health is more important. I hope you can reschedule and have a better time.

You just described my worst nightmare. We go in 2 and 1/2 weeks and I am quite nervous about the flu.

I had decided to do our trip in November vs. February because the regular flu tends to hit our town harder in February. Now I have the H1N1 to worry about.

Big hugs! I hope you were able to get money back on the rooms as well.

 I'm so sorry...that must have been awful for you all. Disney Magic is supposed to prevent things like that from happening *sigh*. :sad2: Hope your next trip is a thousand times better than this one ever could have been.

OT: Your ticket budget for next time will be sorely strained if there aren't enough days on your current tickets to do next time without buying yet more ticket cards halfwy through. That is unless Disney cut you a unique "Ann is a very special person" break on the non-expiration you just got.

(You can safely buy Universal tickets if your current tickets run out too soon next time.)

You still have time to overnight the tickets back to Disney to add yet more non-expiring days if you think you will need more of them. Telephone first to find out how much this will cost and what address to Fedex to.

I commend you for doing the right thing! It had to be so hard after all that planning. Many people would have stayed and dragged their kids around despite the flu. We saw so many sick kids last weekend.
Disney will always be there and it will be perfect next time!

You poor thing--I can't imagine why anyone would flame you! Of course you're all disappointed. I hope it works out that you can go back again soon.

Awww...my heart breaks for you and your kids :sad1::hug:...That is so disappointing. I pray that you are able to go back soon and it will be 100 times more magical for you!

:flower3: I am so sorry to hear your family got sick while at WDW.

:cold: DS4 got sick while we were at WDW last November. We took him to a great doctor in Celebration (I kept his card in case we need him in the future). Luckily, it was just DS4 that got sick. So, DH and I took turns taking the other kids to the parks. However, it didn't end up being the "family" vacation I had planned for either. But after reading your story, I am very thankful it was just DS4 ill. :confused3 I would have been sick to my stomach if we had to pack up and head back home after one day. I know you planned and anticipated for the trip and had to cut it short. That simply stinks! I hope everyone is better now and you can squeeze in a trip next year. :teacher:

:cool2: We were at WDW this past June and the weather was hot and humid. Also, the crowds were crazy!!!!! 110 minutes stand-by for Test Track on a Thursday morning!!!!! Also, I don't recommend the month of July either because it gets even worse!!!! Personally, I'd try for October again next year (obviously before your tickets expire ;)). They are having unseasonably warm weather right now. So, next year might be the perfect blend of great weather and great crowds. JMO :upsidedow

Good luck! :wizard:

Aww...I'm so sorry you had to deal with this challenge. My heart breaks for you and your family...what an ordeal!

I hope that your next trip is magical in every way.

I would like to think that Disney would offer you some compensation in the way of a room credit- even if it's just towards a future trip.

Have you asked? You won't know if you don't try.

Here is to wishing for some pixie dust to go your way! :wizard:

That is very sad. Somehow it is much much worse to look forward to dis and plan and get there and then miss out because you are sick than to not go at all. I'm glad you are all ok.

My son 2 days before our trip got a fever with H1N1. We were going Oct 2 - 6th. We cancelled the trip. The good news is he got over it in 3 days. Now we have filed an claim against the disney insurance.

In case anyone is interested Disney has already refunded us partly which is the total price of your pacakage minus the trip insurance premium, airfare, and $200 for a cancellation fee.

We expect to get the $200 and airfare ~$800 back from the Trip Insurance in about a month.
My biggest fear is that they won't refund the airfare in cash and give us some type of useless vouchers instead. But we will see. Anyone else booked a total package including air through disney and had to file a cancellation claim?

We have already booked another trip from Nov 27th-Dec 1. I booked the airfare seperately this time and decided against paying again for the insurance. Hopefully lightning won't strike twice.

One good surprise was that disney did refund in cash our MNSSHP tickets that we had purchased online. That was about a $200 value.

Bad news is that airfare is more expensive and we lost the Free Dining.

That is very sad and I feel your pain. In March I took my boys and 2 days into our 7 day trip I got word my mom broke her hip. We packed up and left the next day and my boys were crying about leaving most of the way home. Of course they really didn't understand about my mom, they were just disappointed because we were so excited about the trip. We had a package with dining at a mod and I lost $$ but oh well, it happens. To make up for it I started planning a trip ASAP.

We leave for our next trip next Tuesday and thankfully we are getting over the flu here.
