My resort, vacation cost and my co-workers, ughh

I get what the OP is saying. Lots of times people don't come right out and ask you, they just say "You're going to Disney again? That must cost a fortune!" and then wait for a reaction. Most people, or at least someone in their family, have gone to Disney and taken the hit on the wallet, so they know the price. I usually just smile when I get that comment, coz I KNOW they be jealous! They be jealous!!!!

"It's worth every dime to us, and we can't wait to go!"

Then talk about something else.

You don't owe anyone any explanations you're not comfortable giving.

Well its about 6 weeks out till our trip and I am starting to dread mentioning it my co-workers. I mean they already have an idea because I have mentioned the needed dates, (for my name on the vacation calendar)

I really don't want to be honest about how much it costs to stay at the AKL. I'm sure they will ask something though.:headache:
Tell them you got a great deal with the dining plan and everything for $1500!

It doesn't matter what they think, this is your families time and money you work just like they do. You can tell them like my mom tells people (touch your nose) lol enjoy your time off!!!

I work with lots of women and believe it or not when you start discussing Disney they really want to know the cost and how much is spent because they see my family go ever year and would like to take their kids too. Depending on who I talk with I may be more open about our expenses and what we truly spend, but I also try to tell them all the ways to save or at least maximize your dollar for Disney. We too are going back in May and I have thought about the questions that I will get too, when they see our pictures at the AKL with our Savannah view! We rented DVC points, so no we are not paying the advertise price on Disney's website of $504 per night!!:crazy2:

Like you posted, I've had people hint very strongly (rudely IMO) about what our WDW vacas cost. I don't ever give away what I pay. (none of their business) Instead I redirect the conversation and I go "all Budget-Board" on them. I tell them about the discounts available throughout the year and how I use "found money" (selling on ebay/amazon, gift card deals, swagbucks/perk, credit card rewards, etc etc) to fund a large chunk of our trips. At this point, their jaw is usually hanging open. I finish off with "like a lot of things, when you want something badly enough, when it's really important to you, you find ways to make it possible".

Well, my wife and I have gone to WDW over our lifetimes, so many times I've lost count. I get questions all the time about cost. Over the years, we have learned many ways budget and to reduce our costs through discounted gift cards, off-season travel, credit card rewards for flights/hotels..., packing/planning our meals, dvc rentals, etc., etc. We have done comparisons of a trip to WDW other trips, and sure there are cheaper vacations, but in the end, we find the value of a trip to WDW to much better than other vacations.

Then, I ask them how much do you spend to take the family to go watch a movie, go to musical; go to a play, go to a rock concert, go to the annual fireworks show, go to Monkey Joes (a children's activity center), go ride the train at the mall, go to the zoo, go to the county fair, do the amusement park rides, go swimming, etc., etc. Now, imagine being able to do this all in one place and compare the cost.

Sure, it costs a lot to go to WDW, but how much entertainment do you get in return?

My coworkers, who are also of the age to have children that they might want to take to Disneyworld, know I have been several times. They ask cost because they are curious about it for maybe planning a trip with their kids.

Luckily, with DH's coworkers, I just get our TAs contact information (his coworkers usually ask stuff over text/email).

I have also said something like "5 day parkhoppers cost ....." Then I say you can stay offsite cheap or in a value or in a deluxe depending on your budget.

I've had people ask before and I just say "its expensive, but its worth it to us."

The thing that rubs me the wrong way so much is when people at work know I'm going to Disney and they say "Must be nice." I am usually just nice and smile, but I want to say "You make as much money as I do"

Just say, "Well...it depends what time of year you are going and what coupons you can find. It has a wide range of prices and I work hard to find good deals." Period. If they push harder, just say, "I don't recall the exact amount but I'm sure we'll get an equal amount of fun for the price!"

I forgot to ask. How much is your trip btw :p

I don't think that people would usually come out and ask how much it costs -- it is none of their business. If they comment on how expensive it must be the just down play it and say that you had gotten a good price or that you are just splurging a little bit this trip. Like others have mentioned it really isn't their business.

I guess vacations can be a touchy topic because people are curious how someone can afford a luxury trip, but you have to keep in mind there are a number of different people and situations:
-those who don't vacation much or anything elaborate because they can't afford it,
-those who do splurge out of their means and have a debt just to take a vacation,
-those that save up for a couple of years to take a once in a life time vacation
-those who have more money than they know what to do with it so they are always taking luxury vacations.

I like to save up and enjoy a really nice vacation every few years. Maybe you saved up so you can really splurge on this trip -- that is all your coworkers need to know. If you got a really good deal on your resort or tickets or used a special travel agent to make this trip affordable. Maybe you share that info so that one day they can stay at AKL

Oh and if they are really curious how they can afford a disney trip tell them about DISboards. I would have never really learned the ins/outs of DVC before coming on this board -- DVC is how we can afford to go more often.

Having worked in hospitality for 15 years, I have no filter when I begin asking questions about other peoples vacations. Probably rude, but I'm also excited for them. I ask questions like. "OOOH that's exciting! Did you find a good discount for your package?" or "That's amazing, once I found (Insert specific discount here) on such and such website." or if I have been where they are going to I will say "Oh! I've been there! You have to go to XYZ it only cost this amount, and you can find a coupon on such and such website!"

I get excited by travel. Maybe I've been offending people and didn't know it! I just like getting them and myself excited about it!

A question asked does not mean a question answered.

DH and I have gone 10 times this year. So yeah, we get that. My answer? Nope, it doesn't. .

Quite honestly, if a co worker asked directly how much my Disney vacation cost, I would simply tell them it's none of their business. However, as others have said, there are ways around that and I have never given total cost to anyone ever. It's my money (and my husband's) and we have never paid rack rate at any hotel ever, we don't do the dining plan, we drive and don't fly and we save money while we are there in every way imaginable. If someone is willing to look online and see what a rack race is at any Disney resort we've stayed at for the time we stayed there, that's THEIR problem, not mine. Because that's not what I paid for it and they are the uninformed if they think that.

No one should ever ask anyone else what they paid for vacations, cars, houses, pets, clothes or anything that is personal to the person they are asking.
