My resort, vacation cost and my co-workers, ughh

At my job we discuss vacation costs because everyone is always looking for a good deal. It's not to rub it in anyone's face but to help each other out. Someone may outright ask on price or someone will just volunteer the good deal. No one puts anyone down for their vacation choices.

In almost 40 years of working and vacationing, I never once had a coworker ask me how much my hotel cost.
Since my partner at work and his wife are Disneyphiles and we go on vacation together, we know how much each one spends...but the rest of my co-workers do not need to know.

It's one thing to give someone a source (or sources) for finding a deal. It's another to ask someone how much their trip cost outright.
Heck, I wouldn't even ask a family member how much they paid for something. Much less a friend or even a co-worker.

I own DVC too - but now that I live in Florida - going a little more frequently - now I need to break away from the parks and do other things.
when I worked my co-workers though I was crazy for going to WDW every year (okay several times a year). but they never thought of their trips to beach the same way - until pointed it out.
but asking someone how much it costs - NO.
when brought DVC (back in 1993) was told was crazy - now those same people are little jealous.
that say no longer is DVC the deal it once was - since BLT the prices are up, up and up. So as much as I love Polyn would not add on there. Just can't afford it.

Same here. It seems natural to talk like this with co-workers since we're always scheming/dreaming with one another to get away.

Today's lunch topic was car rental deals. :)

I get what the OP is saying. Lots of times people don't come right out and ask you, they just say "You're going to Disney again? That must cost a fortune!" and then wait for a reaction. Most people, or at least someone in their family, have gone to Disney and taken the hit on the wallet, so they know the price. I usually just smile when I get that comment, coz I KNOW they be jealous! They be jealous!!!!
Hitting the nail on the head here.

I don't see a reason to tell them the price unless you want to tell them about the great deal you got. I have never told anyone how much I have spent on my vacation since it is not any of there business

"Way too much!" is my normal answer. I think the way in which they ask makes a difference. For instance, "I'm dying to stay there! How much is it a night?" vs. "You're going to Disney again?!? How do you afford that? Isn't AKL really expensive? How much are you spending?"

Every time we tell people (extended family and friends) we're going to Disney World, we get the eyeroll and the "Again? Isn't that expensive?" comments.

But it's worth dealing with all that. When you've found something that your family absolutely loves to do together, more than anything, how is that not priceless?

Don't let others steal your excitement. Just say what I say: "It's worth it."

I go with; "we're worth it"

Heck, we have family members that keep asking..."going to Disney again?" My wife and I love it, we have brought our sons many times...and now that they are in the military, we come by ourselves. Heck, my son in the Army asked to go in August while he was on leave. You can't put a price on happiness....and great memories.

This seems quite odd. If you want to discuss the costs then go ahead and do it, but if not, then don't. It's all in how you answer. Who on earth would ask for the grand total of your vacation?! It seems you are reading far too much into things.

Well its about 6 weeks out till our trip and I am starting to dread mentioning it my co-workers. I mean they already have an idea because I have mentioned the needed dates, (for my name on the vacation calendar)

I really don't want to be honest about how much it costs to stay at the AKL. I'm sure they will ask something though.:headache:

Is there a reason why you have to answer them? "we are going to Disneyworld". You don't need to say where you are staying, you don't need to talk about how much it costs. Heck, you can just say "we are going to Florida" or "We are going where it's warmer" there's no reason you have to give details. And I'm not afraid to tell people "Mind your own business" when I don't want to answer them.

Maybe they won't say too much. I think they will be like, how much is this trip going to cost y'all all together or something. I guess I can dumb it down a bit. But, believe me, I get comments in general about having more money than I know what to do with, that has nothing to do with Disney. ( which is not true at all)
That very comment came from a man just last week. No joke!

Again, just because you are asked a question it doesn't mean you have to answer a question.

Thought of you guys last night! We had our work Christmas dinner, and my boss asked when I was leaving for Disney and how long I was staying. When she said there was no way she could go to Disney for 10 days, only one person agreed, and the rest of the table said they could ALWAYS go to Disney for 10 days, if not longer! It was funny!!! There are a lot of us out there!!

I've had people ask - not so much out right "how much did you spend" but questions about cost. Sometimes, if I think that they are curious about going themselves, I will mention that there are a number of different options for accommodation across many ranges of cost including off-site as well as on-site. I'll also mention that the tickets can be expensive but that multi-day tickets cost less per day than a single day ticket, and that you get a lot of entertainment for that cost.

I guess vacations can be a touchy topic because people are curious how someone can afford a luxury trip, but you have to keep in mind there are a number of different people and situations:

Also if you don't have children. We spend a lot at Victoria & Albert's and people ask how can we afford/justify/want to pay that much. When I point out that I have no children and that what they spend on a vacation for two adults and two children we spend on two adults, they have to concede that it makes a lot of sense when you look at it that way.
