I can't believe this. My mom called to tell me and I finally just talked to my sister. My nephew, he's almost 8yo, was coming off the school bus when he was approached by a stranger. The man was in a van and he pulled up next to him and asked if he wanted a ride home!
Now, my sister lives on the corner of a cul-de-sac. The bus stops at the corner across from their house and their house is down a hill. It really is 10sec away from the house and my sis can see it from her door. It just goes to show you it only takes a sec. for something horrible to happen to a kid! She was in the house and hasn't waited outside for him this year. They feel he is old enough. Anyway I am so proud of him. When he was approached he screamed and ran to his house!! My sis called the cops, the school and the bus garage. When the cops questioned my nephew not only was he able to give the description of the van, was able to describe what the man looked like, and what he was wearing(red hat and grey sweatshirt). I am so proud that he did the right thing and so greatful he is OK. They all have so much going on now, my sis is getting divorced, I can't even imagine her having anymore on her plate right now. All I have to say is thank God for watching over him.

As a side note, last week there was an attepted abduction of a woman a few miles from their home. That person was caught but unfortunately not before he raped a young woman that he captured from the mall parking lot.
My sis lives in a good area in Rockland County, the mall I was referring to is the Palisades Mall in West Nyack. It goes to show you these things can and do happen anywhere!

I am so sorry that your nephew had to go through this scary situation. How is he doing? How is your sister doing? I bet though both are a little rattled right now.

OMG!

I'm so glad he's all right!

Really makes you wonder though, doesn't it?

Thats awful. I'm so glad he is safe.

Smart little fellow! I am so VERY happy he knew and did the right thing and that he is ok and safe! I also want to make note that WE do have to be as careful of our BOYS as we do our GIRLS! It's a sad, sad world when our children aren't even safe coming and going from school, let alone anywhere else.

How scary! I'm glad he's OK. I hope his description leads the police to the suspect soon.

I'm glad your nephew is all right. He sure handled it well! I'm sure it scared him, but everyone should be proud of him!

Glad he remember all the right things under pressure..

Wow, how scary!!! You should all be proud of the way your nephew handled this. I hope the police are able to catch guy.

Thumbs up to him. We tell our kids to be careful, and it is so comforting to know that he remembered. It is even more comforting to know that he is fine and safe.

Wow, that is really frightening! I was just thinking about what age should kids be allowed to get off the bus alone, too. There are several kids that get off at our stop, which conveniently is directly across the street from our house, but we always have one adult meet the bus.

I even asked the bus driver what she would do if no one was there to meet the bus. She said she would bring them back to school and not let them off, since she knows that we always have someone there to meet the bus.

That is also scary news about the Palisades Mall. I go there pretty frequently (one of the few remaining mall that has a nice Disney Store!) and I have always felt pretty safe parking there. I guess you can be at risk almost anywhere! Its a shame.

We are all so proud of him. You know out of all the kids in the family my nephew, Kenny, is the one we all would think wouldn't know how to handle a situation like this. He is such a sweetie and sometimes walkes with his "head in the clouds"!!LOL My sister has always drilled in the kids heads to run and scream!!

As far as how they all are now, they are OK. He was very shaken up right after. My sister said she felt sick to her stomach and she was a wreck!

My daughters bus stop is 2 houses away. I am at the bus stop in the morning and afternoon. All the parents and 1 grandparent always are too. One day I was running late, actually changing DS diaper! I was at the door when the bus came and ran out as it was pulling away. About 1 minute later the bus garage called to make sure I was home and had my daughter. The other parents were at the stop. Before we moved the other school she went to would not leave her at the stop if I wasn't there. They would've brought her back to the garage. My younger sister is 12yo and my mom is at that bus stop everyday! She's the type of mom that drove us to school through high school! I'm the same way! Personally I think at 8yo my sister should be at the bus stop. It is hard for her because she has 2 jobs and a 2yo. I'm a SAHM so it's easier for me to say I'll be there everyday till my kids are 17yo!!!LOL;)

So glad he knew what to do and is OK. I hope the police catch the jerk. Something similar happened to my 13 yo over the summer. Very scary.

That is terrible, but thank God he is safe. My thoughts are with your family, they must be so frightened, yet so relieved.

Thank God he knew what to do and did it!!! But how scary for him. His guardian angel is probably tired too from working overtime!! I'm so glad he's ok. You just NEVER know these days. I'll say prayers for you and your family for peace of mind.

An athletic 13-yo boy was grabbed by a man at a school bus stop here (East Tennessee) a year ago. He broke free and ran home but it is SCARY to think even an athletic teenage boy is not necessarily safe walking home from the bus stop.

So glad to hear the OP's nephew knew what to do and made it home safe.

I am so glad your nephew knew what to do and is home safe and sound.

Our kids aren't safe anymore. There are too many sick people out there.
I hope they catch them.
