And he hasn't eaten, I don't think he's even used the kitty litter box. We keep him current on his shots, because years ago, we had a cat die of Feline Leukemia. He just had his shots about a month ago. This isn't like him. We're a 2 cat family, and at least the other cat isn't bothering him because he seems to have a sense that Simba isn't feeling well. Any ideas of what could make him so lethargic?

I'm sorry he isn't feeling well. I wish I had some advice for you- I hope that he's okay.

Call your vet ASAP. My old cat was the same way one night/day and was diagnosed with diabetes when I took him in to the emergency vet.

Don't panic, as it could be nothing, but it's best to be sure.

I agree call the vet, their bodies are so small and can get taken over by a bug very rapidly. Hoping all is okay

He needs seen asap. My cat died only a month ago from Hepatic Lipidosis, due to not eating. I am really not trying to alarm you, but I would rather you err on the side of caution than your cat go through what Tucker did.

(It may not be what Tucker had, but not eating and lethargy are definitely signs that a cat needs to be seen asap)

Please read this:

Hi all,

I recently lost my 1 1/2 yo cat, Tucker, to a condition called Feline Hepatic Lipidosis (aka Fatty Liver disease/syndrome). It is something I had never heard of until my cat became severely ill and was hospitalized.

You can find more info here: http://www.thecatsite.com/Cats/Cat_H...Lipidosis.html

The reason I am mentioning this is because it can happen so quickly and is so dangerous. Basically, a cat stops eating for whatever reason. Possibly stress, illness, etc. Their not eating (and/or an underlying illness) makes them feel sick which keeps them from eating, it becomes a vicious cycle of anorexia. Their body starts trying to metabolize their fat stores for energy and the liver cannot handle the overload. Then the liver starts to fail. At this point, the cat will die without aggressive treatment. Our Tucker succumbed to this illness in less than a week.

Please, I really hope everyone here will educate themselves about this illness. Keeping in tune with your cat's eating habits can be the difference between life and death in a very short period of time. It is imperative that you have your cat seen by a vet if they stop eating for more than a day. I cannot stress this enough. Maybe it will be nothing, but it is NOT normal for a cat to just stop eating and it is important to find out why and make sure they get the nutrition they need.

I see so many threads, "My cat won't eat", "My cat doesn't like his food anymore". No matter how it starts, cats often will not just start eating again. They go into a state of anorexia that is very, very difficult to reverse. Many end up needing force fed and/or feeding tubes.

One other thing I want to mention is that this strikes obese cats especially, for some reason. This is noteworthy because Tucker was a 'fat cat' and it is easy to just assume that the 'fat cat' is getting all of the food they need. And that their appetite will stay healthy. If they start losing weight, you are not as concerned as you would be with a thin cat because you just assume they could use a diet anyways. Any sudden weight loss should be treated as a red flag unless it is a slow weight loss under the direction of your vet.

I just had to add this thread because I was unaware of this and because I have 7 cats who ate from a common gravity feeder, I wasn't aware that Tucker had stopped eating until it was too late. I took him to the vet on Thursday, he had exploratory surgery on friday to check for obstruction and he was gone saturday. It was truly devastating to our family. I hope to prevent another cat from having the same fate.

Thanks for reading this and I wish all of you and your furbabies long and healthy lives!

Take him to an emergency hospital vet as soon as possible. My ex-BF's cat went through the same symptoms a couple of years ago. Turns out, he took Kitty to the vet just in time. Kitty had some type of virus & had to be given a shot & follow up meds for it right away. :(

It's also contageous - so his other cat had to be given a dose of the meds too, (by mouth - no shot,) as she started coming down with it a couple of days later. Both were up & active again within a few days. :Pinkbounc

Make sure you tell the vet you have TWO cats, so if it is the same type of virus, you will be given enough meds for both kitties.

So how is your cat? Did you take him to the vet? If not, please do it now...

He may be blocked. They can be lethargic from that as well.

Please update~!

Yes,I agree with the above posters:take him to the vet immediately! Kittens dehydrate really fast and it sounds like your kitty needs a vet.If your kitten has not eaten or had a drink in 24 hours it's urgent that you get him to a vet ASAP!!
Please come back and let us know how your kitty kat it doing.

Anytime you can tell a cat is sick, they are really sick. Take him in now.

I want to thank everyone for their concern. He got up this morning and went to the kitty litter box, but he still hasn't eaten or done anything except sleep since Friday eve. I hadn't thought of some of the things people here have mentioned-thanks for the ideas. Since it's Sunday, I'm going to wait until the vet opens tomorrow to take him in (there isn't even an emergency vet in this part of the world). What complicates this is that we leave Thursday for 2 days for DS's wedding in Mexico. After all this, they won't postpone the wedding for a sick cat. And since it's a different country, I can't take him with me. I'm going to look into the diabetes a little more.

I think you shouldn't wait until tomorrow. Have you tried calling your vet? Emergencies happen all the time and I'm sure they have some sort of instructions on their answering machine for reaching either your vet or some other vet. I really wouldn't let this continue for another 24 hours. Look what happened to poor Tucker so quickly. Just my 2 cents but you posted for advice and I'd really suggest not waiting until tomorrow. When a cat shows signs of sickness he's REALLY sick that's the advice we have always used when it comes to cats.

Do whatever you can to get your cat to some sort of vet today.

Hopefully, your vet will board your cat for you while you're away to keep an eye on him.

So sorry that your furbaby is not feeling tip top...Hope all turns out well...Hugs :grouphug:

If you have a Petsmart around, you can call them too to see if they have a weekend vet. Ours does.

I agree, get him in soon.

Where I work we normally don't board pets. In extreme emergencies, such as this one is, we would board. We also board cats that are diabetic.
Definately check with your vet, and I hope kitty is okay!

Lisa

Simba,How is your kitten doing? Did you get the little guy to the vets? Was everything OK??
Please excuse me if I missed your update but I would really like to know what happened to you kitty.
