my kids got the most obnoxious "goody bag" ever!!

Who comes up with these ideas, anyway?!?! I think that's a cruel thing to do to the kids, to the parents and to the fish! I think I would have had to "gracefully" decline the parting gift! Maybe she would have gotten the hint!
On the same subject, my friend is a florist and she says the newest "trend" is to give a special vase of flowers with a Beta Fish in the bottom. The vase is made special with a more rounded bottom. The roots of whatever flowers/plant are used can be eaten by the Beta to keep them under control. We both think this is terribly cruel and she refuses to sell them. I shudder to think what someone else will come up with. :(

Barb, one of my scouts gave me one of these beta fish as a birthday gift last year! I agree...it is a horrible paractice! The poor thing was miserable and died within weeks. It's awkward to have to say thank you for a gift from a child when what you want ot do is turn to the parent and say WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??? It was also hard for the little girl when the fish died. Yikes! Where are people's heads sometimes?

I thought I had heard it all when it comes to children birthday party but this takes the cake....a fish???

Well, one of the "goody bags" died during the night so we are already down to two! Actually the kids are really into it and DH may go buy a 10 gallon aquarium--here we go again!
I am thinking guinea pig next year for her DD--PREGNANT guinea pig;) ! But I really wouldn't because I know better!!

The problem with the morons who put the Beta fish in the bottom of a planter and expect them to eat the roots is this:BETA FISH ARE CARNIVEROUS!!!Yes...that means they need some form of MEAT!!!Usually, they are fed dried bloodworms and that keeps them happy.Without a meat product/substitute to keep them healthy,Betas die a terrible death within a few days, even though when kept on a carnvierous diet of dried bloodworms, etc they are some of the healthies, most survivable fish on the market.Betas don't need the special care most fish need...all a Beta needs is a clean bowl and some clean, preferably filtered or bottled, water and some dried worms. That's it!No filters...no special gravel, nada!I've owned my share of Betas and all of them(well, except Icthys..who I accidentally boiled.. )lived a very, very long time for a fish.I had one survive for nearly 4 years while I was in HS.
People who give live animals as party favors are complete IDIOTS imho.
Barb...I would give this woman's DD a pair of hamsters..one male and one female for her next birthday and accidentally 'forget' to tell them there is a m/f pair instead of a same sex pair.
Would serve them right.

okie im slow
i thought you meant the food goldfish and i was like-what is wrong with that?

but a fish!?!?! oh my goodness...
why would someone give a pet as in a goody bag? oh my!

It might of been a good idea for the mother who was giving the party to contact others and tell them of hre idea and see if it would be ok to give the children fish.

A couple years ago at my nephews school fair there was a game that the prize was goldfish, some of these kids were running around with 5 and 6 bags of fish you could just see the loook on the faces of the parents. My nephew ended up with 5 bags, of course this is the game all the kids were going to.

That's crazy! I"ve never heard of goldfish as party favors before. I'd be pretty steamed. :D

That is the craziest thing I have ever heard!! I would be furious if my boys came home from a party w/ a goldfish!!

I am definatly the outcast on this one. I like the idea and would not mind one bit. Then again, I'm the one who put whoopie cushins in goodie bags one year!

My DD got glitter glue in a goody bag and glued her lips together (she thought it was lipstick) I was a little annoyed. Goldfish -- give me a break! I've never heard of giving a pet as a party favor - the mom probably thought she was being very clever.

Well . . . you could always . . . feed the fish to the dogs. :teeth: Just kidding.

Truthfully, I'd return them--with a big cheesy smile.

Well, Spunky died sometime today so we only have "Sassy" left--I think if we wait another couple of days the whole thing will be a moot point!

First goldfish don't need to die quick. They die quickly because their owners put them in BOWL, which they should NOT. Goldfish are very high waste producing fish and when then are in a small bowl they are killed by their own waste (and the ammonia produced from it)

Goldfish CAN live for many years (over 10 and up) if properly cared for. This means a tank large enough for them to swim properly and thrive (i think the recommendation is 5-10 gallons PER fish), a filter to control waste and algae, a air pump for good circulation, a good diet and regular tank cleanings.

We've had a carnival (feeder) goldfish for over 2 years. He's now over 5 inches long from nose to end of his tail fin. He's in a 10 gallon tank now, but he's getting so big, he's going to need a new one very soon.

Put a goldfish in a bowl, yes they die quickly, because they choke and die from their own waste. Please research goldfish if you are planning on keeping one. And if not, many pet stores will take them from you so they don't need to be "flushed".

Excited he'll probably die?

We went to a birthday party recently where they also gave out fish. I thought it was rather clever, but of course ours died the day after we got him home. :(

I have kept Slimey and Gill in a "bowl" for 3 years now (carnival won fish) and they are perfectly healthy. Of course, I clean their bowl out once a week. :)

Well I'm not EXCITED that he may die, but I don't have the resources right now to buy a tank, filter, etc. and no pet shops nearby---if I knew we were getting fish maybe I would have been prepared!
DD#1 has been very good about cleaning out the bowl. The neighbors also have had a goldfish for 3 years in a bowl. So I don't think that's the issue. I just don't think the fish they sell at Meijer are very hardy!
If we do get more fish we'll buy the setup first, get the water ready, etc. and then get the fish--we'll do it right, not just get 3 fish forced on us.
