My imagination of what June was like and what it was really like..

We typically always go in April, Feb, Jan, Oct, Nov, or Dec....when the temps are cooler and reasonable. I had envisioned June, July & August as this sweltering, tennis shoe melting, steaming asphalt, heat stroke inducing larger than life experience.

But we went anyway, to take a grandson....at the end this June.

I wanted to share what it was really like for those who try to avoid the hot temps, like we did. (I did go in Sept. last fall with a girlfriend and we had cooler than normal temps so it wasn't bad at all).

I'm from Georgia and used to hot summers. Yes, it was hot like that, but the humidity was worse. So much worse, omg.

All day long I had a layer of sweat on my face and chest. My underthings stayed sweaty and I went through two bras per day/night. At the end of touring each afternoon, getting off that wet sports bra was like wrestling an angry octopus. :D

Having a tiny, 5-inch hand held fan (they have them at walmart for about $3) was a life saver. That big ol' thing they sell at disney for $20 is a pain to lug around, The tiny one was great and actually had more air power. It saved my life, by cooling me down. Didn't need the mister, my face was already wet, haha!

Overall, I had grown the 'thought' of the heat to a larger than life experience, and it wasn't as bad as I expected. If you try it, come prepared. Bring a small fan, plenty of bras and panties, baby powder, & sunglasses.

And drink drink drink drink. None of us got dehydrated but the opportunity is clearly there.

(grandson is from a much cooler state and he wilted from the humidity, kept saying he just wasn't used to it and can we please go back to the hotel....)

So all in all...we were surprised. It was just a southern summer...but sweatier.

Day made, made me laugh out loud :lmao:

Am from GA, rarely attempt summer trip, but today I am considering a very quick stop.

Hmmm, I'll be visualizing my evening octopus wrestling match.

Us Floridians know to avoid Disney during the summer. We only go from Jan- April and back in November. The only way we would go in the summer is if we had family in town who wants to go. Typically we go to the beaches in the summer.

:lmao:

That is the funniest expression I've ever heard! :rotfl:

Agreed!

And when you take a moment to consider it - 100% accurate too!

@Hisgirl I know your post was about more than just wrestling angry sea critters but that totally made my day/night and possibly week! I think that phrase will definitely make its way into what my friends refer to as "Kathy-isms" but don't worry, I'll make sure to credit you. :goodvibes

To be honest, the first time I thought of the animal/wrestling clothes example was when I was lying on my back on a bed, feet in the air, trying to shimmy and tug and pull on a too tight pair of panty hose...PANTY HOSE...I mean who wears those anymore, right?? It was like wrestling a sea lion for a fish with all the kicking and flailing and I had to laugh out loud. Now, anytime I'm bending and flinging arms and hanging upside down while fighting an item of clothing, I always think of some mad animal. (we won't even talk about the time I got stuck in a TJMAXX dressing room in a B-cup tankini top and that baby was NOT coming off! :D:D) Add some sweat and you find yourself lookin' for scissors! (hence the baby powder!)

I'd have never guessed that we got more used to it here in TN but I guess we do. We have done summer trips for 3 years in a row now and didn't find them so difficult to manage at all. Hot sure. Just not hotter than home or hotter (or more humid) than anticipated it being.

Maybe we avoid the worse parts of the day? We do alter our touring style, that s for sure.

Oh, the key the avoiding the battle with the sports bra, get the kind that clips in the back ;)

I went once in June. For our six days, instead of doing theme parks every day, we just did two theme parks (first day (SeaWorld) and fourth day (MK)). Because of the heat on the other four days lol -- we did three water park days (Wet and Wild was still around and we bought a week day season pass ($45pp) -- cheapest option for everyone to go to a waterpark three times) and did one beach day -- went to Clearwater Beach. // I went down then because DH had a seminar there, so freebie Disney accommodations and DS and some extended family joined me (some offsite condo time too). All were on board with the more water than theme park focus. Next time DH had a summer seminar, though, I stayed home (saved my money to go a cooler time). We also had not bought tickets ahead of time, so had that flexibility to change plans on this trip. These days with FP+ we would have been sol.

I really dislike heat and humidity though. As long as I was in the water though I found that enjoyable. But I really am in Orlando for theme parks vs. water park and beach. The switch above, though, for four days of water rather than theme park activities salvaged the vacation for me.

DS 21 is going on a mini trip in September with a friend to celebrate their birthdays. It is an inexpensive time and a low crowd time. It's not as bad as summer, but still hot and humid. They are young and can handle it and are only down for three days (two days of theme park). // Winter is my pick if that works out lol.

LOL!

I agree, if you think it will be deadly, you will probably be pleasantly surprised ;)

We usually go in August because that's when we can go

Yes, well I do think it will be awful and horrible and brutal! Heat and especially humidity and I do not do well together! And, I'm expecting the worst! I mean, the first person we asked what it was like there in August was a Poly bartender and he said "It's BRUTAL"! And have read many guest experiences here on the Dis, more words describing August such as horrible, awful, too much, the worst, horrid, and more. Didn't make me wanna go, lol. But, tho we like to go Nov/Dec, DD26 is now working in a school so we can't do a week trip then. UGH! We are gonna do a short weekend trip to do some Christmas in Nov though, so happy for that at least!

But it does make me worry about our trip. I'm really excited for our trip but also dreading it at the same time, and with big crowds making it even worse. And I'm not one who wears shorts or tank tops, either and won't start. No one wants to see this in those, lol. Gotta figure out something tho, lol.

But, I know what you are both talking about when you make a situation out to be really awful, sometimes it turns out to be not as bad as expected, so interesting you say that. We went for the last 24 hour day and I was dreading the late May heat. I got one of those small fans you mention, and paired it with a Frogg toggs. Was skeptical about those, but they worked pretty good for me then. But, combining the two, I really felt they helped make it, as you noted, 'not as bad as expected'! So, that was good, though May is probably not nearly as bad as August so that may not be saying much. Maybe I'll keep just saying how awful it will be and it just won't be able to compare to how much I 'grow' it to be, lol. I keep hoping for an unusual cooler than 90 spell with like record breaking lower humidity! I know, near impossible.

The angry wet octopus is why I either go bra free (when the outside clothing permits me to do that and maintain common decency!) or wear a bikini top under my clothes which seems to dry quicker. They're also so much easier to handwash and dry for the next day so minimises packing too!

I did once end up with a sweat waterfall running down my chest under my dress when the humidity was insanely high, so I didn't repeat that particular outfit, and I completely feel your sweat drenched pain.

This was a great read to start my morning!! I can just picture it now --lol!! I guess with that kind of humidity and sweating it pays to get a place that has laundry. It would be tough to have to pack literally 2 outfits and undergarments for everyday.

We might be forced to do a june trip at some point due to the kids schedule with school and sports. There are always ways to manage the heat and humidity, you just need to read up here to learn all the tips and tricks to Disney in the summer

I am going the end of next week and I have low expectations or plan to be in the parks from 4 to close. Me and my DDs are going Friday while DH is at a conference and we plan to stay in the front of EPCOT in lines for TT and Soarin' character greetings and such. We have frog togs and the misting fan.

We were June 27-June 2 and thought it was much more pleasant than our Houston summer heat and humidity. With that said, when we go in summer we do all our planning for FPs and ADRS but it is fairly common for us to end up cancelling then if we feel wiped out from the heat. We do try to create our schedule so we are there for rope drop and then head back to the resort or to some kind of indoor air conditioned place (bar, resort hop, etc) so we are not outside in peak heat and humidity. Then we feel rested and ready to face the heat again we go back to the parks in the evening. I do have to say that I don't think I would have as much fun if I we were doing a commando trip in the summer heat and humidity. I think the key is to be more relaxed about everything you "have" to do in the summer months.

Initially, me and my two cousins were planning on going hands free. Would be nice but....really thinking about how hot it's going to be this month I thought better of it and declared to my cousins that I'm bringing a backpack. Here's what I'm putting in it. An umbrella. A small battery operated fan. Two cooling towels and sun screen. Rain jacket. After reading this thread, I'm going to put my bladder back in my back pack, so I can stay hydrated. I HATE the heat. The only reason I'm going at this time of year is because my cousins have a time share and it is going to be the cheapest Disney trip I've ever taken. So to save $ I am braving the heat. I am planning on a leisurely pace, and doing a fair amount of sitting and letting them go on the thrill rides I won't go on. And...getting some cold drinks and snacks along the way. Oh, and using the express bus to hop from park to park. Any other suggestions I haven't thought of?

My parents-in-law have taken us to WDW to celebrate their 40th and 50th wedding anniversaries which is mid-June. If God willing we are all still healthy enough to do it again for their 60th, I'll be there with bells on. (5 more years)

It's not when I would choose to go, but that's largely because of my job being so busy then. Plus the weather is tough IMO because there are so many hours of daylight.

Most of my trips have been late August through October. It's still crazy hot then, but the sun goes down a couple hours earlier and I think that makes it more bearable.
