was one of the oldest and respected in New England. Three governors came from there including Michael Dukakis. it was an interesting and fun place to work.

A couple of years ago a couple of the partners decided they were not making enough money. Like $500,000 per year is just not enough. They threatened to leave unless another partner was made managing partner and so he was. He immediately instituted all kinds of cost cutting measures and demanded a whole lot more in the way of billable hours. A few partnres left, taking their clients with them. Although he had promised to DOUBLE partners' draw, my boss ended up with a 6% decrease and so did lots of others. The partners who were formerly paid on a formula basis had their compensation determined solely by this man.

More and more lawyers left and more and more lawyers and staff were fired.

Just last Friday a friend of mine, a woman in her early 60's I think, was assigned to work the "help desk" which is for people to call when they are having trouble with their computers. She was clearly not qualified for that spot, but she tried her best. She got a call from the ******* managing partner (who is calling is revealed on a screen) and answered the phone - oh Charles, this is the help desk and I need all the help I can get. No jokes for Charles - he reported her to Personnel who called her in. She just quit on the spot. Over 20 years with the firm, well-liked, very smart and very good at her job. She walked out not giving a damn about health insurance or anything else. This poor woman lost a son in an ATV accident a coupole of years ago and this past summer her house (a beautiful old Colonial) burned to the ground. Did they give her any help or even compassion. Hah!

I don't know how long it will be before this 100 year old firm goes under (or is perhaps sold) but it breaks my heart. 30% of the people gone - mostly very good and nice people.

Greed will get you every time.

Very sad, Marla.

In today's corporate world, it is a shame that greed and profits and the almighty dollar is more important than pride and integrity.

How very sad. I hope this woman doesn't need the insurance or salary. Sounds like she got very angry. I hope she is alright.

Big law firm politics can be brutal. I have done that and get calls on a regular basis from headhunters asking if I am interested in changing firms. This tends to confirm my decision to stay at a firm where I control my only destiny.

I am sorry for your friend. I wish her the best of luck.

Very sad story. To have a once prestigious firm become like that is a shame.
