And now that I've got your attention ...

On Thursday, I went to a Learning Annex seminar called "High Impact and Savvy Design for Under $1,000 with Doug Wilson". I thought it would be interesting to hear what Doug had to say for himself.

The seminar started with a video of Doug's work both on and off "Trading Spaces". The infamous room -- remember crying Pam? -- got a round of applause. And then Doug walked out on stage. Suffice it to say that the camera does not do Mr. Wilson justice. He is quite the babe in person. I wish Ty would give a seminar (be still my pounding heart). And he was very personable and very funny. I have to admit it == Doug is a very nice guy and he won the hearts of everyone in the room (which appeared to be about 150 women and 10 men).

He started off wanting to be an actor (he studied Shakespeare), but ended up in interior design. He said he does high end design as well as "Trading Spaces" and some of his room on TS are lower budget concepts of his high end designs. He is very defensive of "crying Pam's" room. Personally, I never thought that room was that bad.

As for the other cast members -- Doug said Hildi is one of his best friends, but sometimes he doesn't even understand what she's doing (like trying to paint carpeting orange). He said Laurie's baby looks suspiciously like Frank (ooooh), and that she is building a house in Mississippi that has ceiling fans in every room (his theory is that she is shipping all those ceiling fans to her house). He never said who his least favorite designer is, but his least favorite room was that "Graveyard Room" designed by Kia. I have a feeling that he doesn't like Frank, by what he didn't say. He said he doesn't like designers who have backgrounds in painting and think that they can decorate a room just by slapping it on the walls (that leaves only Frank, btw).

All in all, it was a fun evening. And who knew that 160 other people had nothing to do on Saturday night either?

How cool! :) I'm glad to hear Doug isn't QUITE as egocentrical as he comes off as on TV. ;)

Wow, that sounds like a fun evening. Although I'd never let Doug loose in my house I do find him entertaining. BTW, I actually liked the "Pam" room.

How fun! :) He does come off as sort of mean on the show. Glad to hear he's really not too bad.

And can someone remind me what the Pam room was. I don't remember. Thanks!

I 'think' the Pam room was the one with the fireplace that she didn't want painted? She left the room, but still had her microphone on, so you could hear her sobbing. Is that the one?

I love watching Trading Spaces! It is almost as addicting as the Dis board!

Sounds like fun! I am attending a Doug Wilson "Chairtable" auction in September. I had heard he is a very nice and down to earth guy. Now I can't wait to see him in person!

LOL! I just saw my new tag. I guess the tag fairy has missed my neverending lust for George Clooney?

The thing that I liked about Doug (besides his innate babe-ness) was that he came out on stage and immediately came down to the floor and walked around through the audience. It was mostly done Q&A style, and he would walk over to the person asking the question. As I said, he was very personable. As it were, I didn't ask a question because he answered everything I wanted to know. And yes, he is divorced and looking.

The room that Doug is most famous is the one where the homeowner burst into tears and sobbed off camera when she saw it. Doug had painted the walls brown and put a white window-pane design on them. The woodwork was white and he put a white facade over the fireplace. The controversary was that this woman did not want her (ugly) fireplace touched, and after an argument with the team, Doug put a white facade over it. Doug said that he was going to do that in the first place (since he obviously needed time to design the facade, and Ty needed time to build it, etc.) He also said that he did see the homeowner after the fact and said he was sorry she didn't like the room. He said he would not apologize for the room. As I said, I thought it was nice.

It was an interesting evening, and there were some people there who didn't watch TS but wanted ideas for decorating their apartments.

How cool. I also would love to have gone to something like that. Maybe he will work his way down south. I also didn't like the color scheme on "Pam's" room but the fireplace I think Ty did an awsome job on. OH BTW, TF it's" TY" that's the BABE. Doug is just OK......................
;)

DW is addicted to that show. I watch occasionally.....I prefer to watch when Amy Wynn Pastor is involved :) Does she do these tours??? I would go to see her :)

How cool! I probably watch "Trading Spaces" at least 5 times every weekend.....the family version also. I am totally addicted! I like Doug also and always thought he was nice looking, but my favorite is Vern Yip. I'd let him design any room of mine (really!). Hildi is quite "out there" and I wouldn't let her within one mile of my house...LOL! :D

I just became a fan of TS this summer while home from school. All I have to say is wow! I would love to meet some of these people in person esp. Doug. Maybe he'll make a trip to Texas :)

How cool!! Which one is Doug again? I don't watch often enough to know any of them by name, just sorta by style.
