This is more so an FYI post because I had a hard time finding any Insulin dependent diabetics who were trying Atkins. We have also learn a few thing to help the rest of us,lol!

First my DH uses an Insulin pump and I think it would be very difficult to do Atkins without it. Not impossible but really difficult!

OUr induction was a little more liberal then recommended. We tried to stay at the 20 carb level but some times his blood sugar (BS) would run to low and we would have to add some carbs. I would say the average has ben 30-40 carbs per day. His blood sugar never went over 180 and then only when we found there were a few more carbs eaten then we thought:p .

He has lost 10lbs in 17 days. As a IDDM it is very difficult to lose weight. He is thrilled! He just saw his endocrinologist today thinking she would read him the riot act but she didn't. She basically told him you can't do 20/carb/day forever. She ideally thinks 30-30-30 should be his goal. The dietian has his diabetic diet set at 300gr carbo/day! How the hell is anyone going to lose weight on that. I really feel they did him a diservice FOR YEARS!!!

Things we have discovered:
Prior to truely "doing Atkins" he had tried the "bar", "shakes" and "chocolates". It is complete crap that they do not impact blood sugar. One bar would crank him to 200 BS. It impacts just not as nuch as a regular candy bar that takes him up to 500 BS. So if your stalling eliminate these from your diet. The fiber does NOT impact but all the sugar alchols do. That the advatage of testing your BD 12-14xs a day you really learn what impacts.

As far as Chol goes ....He is on max dose of Lipator and just started Zestria. For the past few months I have thrown out all the low fat/fat free stuff and have been serving "regular" food. His Chol is the best its been! I can't say for sure if its diet or meds. I am hoping down the road we can wean some of those away.

In my previous career I was Animal Science major.
One of my Nutr. Science professors said the root of all evil 1n the American diet is all the Trans fats not the Natural Animal fats. This was 15 years ago everyone thought he was wacked....HE WAS RIGHT!!

Thanks for sharing this with us. How great that your husband's blood sugar and cholesterol have improved so much.

My husband is not insulin dependent but his blood sugar skyrockets with the teeniest amount of flour or sugar, any refined carbohydrate does him in. He's the happiest and healthiest he has been in 15 years. Atkins works for him and I'm so happy that it works for your husband too.
