My Deep Descent into Disney Madness/May 2013...updated 6x 1/1 and completed

Friday, May 9th - SURPRISE !!!!

D-Day had arrived, and the kids still had NO IDEA what was about to happen as I hustled them out the door to school that morning. I immediately went upstairs to the guest room where I’d been hiding everything for 5 months and did the final suitcase pack. I got the helium balloons at the Dollar Store and packed up their “surprise” present. I had forgotten just how many details there are in the last minute and frantically tried to get it all done before DD came home on the kindergarten bus. The parentals came down that afternoon. DH was able to get out of work early, and he “found” a giant package with our names on it. The kids were a little hesitant (giant packages do not make regular appearances in their lives), but they came over and read the tag. And, surprisingly, did not rush to tear it open in traditional Xmas fashion, but looked at us for permission first. All that stranger danger talk seemed to have worked, as rule #546 is never accept gifts from strangers. But, with a blessing, the wrapping came off, the balloons shot up, and the Mickey Ear’s discovered. BUT, they still had no idea. Finally, I got DS to read his shirt and their reactions are priceless….

Here's a link to the video:

I love how Finn screams with excitement over just the balloons coming up. I also love Nolan's fist pump and Finn's exclamation, "This is the best day of my life". Seriously, though, it was the reaction I had hoped desperately for.

Seriously, I love how my left-brained son was all logical about it wanting to know about when and how long followed with a fist pump and my right-brained DD was just jumping around screaming with no regards to silly details. Her first inclination was to run next door to her BFF and tell her about it.
The only tiny downside was the planning DVD wasn’t in the sleeve, not sure where it is, but we were unable to watch it. I wanted to because my kids really didn’t know all there was to do there and I wanted to excite them a bit. Oh well, what can you do?

Then, funny thing, is that after the excitement and the packing of our carry-on backpacks, they went right back to what they were doing like it was no big deal. The spent the evening collecting lady bugs in the backyard and went to bed with no problems and slept like logs. I think it is because they really didn’t know that we were about to blow their minds with this trip. LOL.
Coincidentally, we found The Incredibles on TV and we watched it while DD and I painted our Minnie Nails. I’ve never done anything like this and we both loved them. Not bad for a first-timer.

Finley's were even cuter, but I don't seem to have any pics of them. Bad mama!

I told you that I fell deep, deep into this madness and I wanted to do all the cute little things I’d been reading about on these boards. We went to bed, set the alarm for an unearthly hour and fell asleep. I was the only one who had trouble sleeping, thankfully. I was going to the big Mouse’s House tomorrow! Would everyone be able to keep up? Would the ADR’s work out? Would the food be as good as I had heard? Would I get some EMH to myself? So many questions, so much time to lay awake and think about them.

Pardon the Interruption...some Cara opinions

On a side note, I thought I’d give a few thoughts on some of the items I obsessed over while I was planning this trip in case others could use my opinion. I read tons of TR’s, blogs, websites, etc trying to find the best bags, shoes, cameras, etc. to bring with me. I hope to bring a little clarity to others who struggled like me. Here’s what I learned:

Shoes: We had a cold spring, so I hadn’t even broken out the sandals yet and I always get blisters the first weeks in them. So I was hesitant to break them out. I loved my work-out Nike’s, but they were heavy. I discovered wicking socks, which I LOVE, for working out and Disney. They kept my feet so dry and comfortable. I will never go without them. I loved Crocs, but my feet are a true ½ size, so the 7’s were too small, the 8’s too big, so no go. I happened upon these Sketchers Go Walks at Kohl’s and thought these are comfortable, but didn’t get them. Eventually, the day before the trip I ran back to grab them because I couldn’t stop thinking about them. GREAT idea. I usually wore my tennis shoes in the morning and changed into these (worn with socks, I’m such a fashionista) in the evenings. They were so light and comfortable. There were a ton of others wearing them too, my DD kept pointing them out to us the whole trip.

DSC_3975.jpg

Camera – I brought my Nikon D60 and got some good pictures, but most of them I could have gotten the same result as a point and shoot without all the weight. I just didn’t have time to do a Manual setting or change lens to get the really good shots, so it wasn’t worth it. Next time it will be a smaller camera.

Pins – GREAT last minute idea. I didn’t think the kids would like it, but they did, especially DD. BUT I will get the other pin backs the people on the DIS talk about because those Mickey backs are a nightmare. They never stayed on so they couldn’t wear the lanyards like they wanted to, so I had to dig in my backpack every time they wanted to trade. I did buy them on ebay from reputable people I got from the DIS list here in the Collectibles section, and I only got 2 pins that I think are scrappers due to their coloring. It just looks off. We ended up with 50 pins to trade and that was barely enough for three of us to trade.

My Stash (I had a nerd thing going on):
DSC_3971.jpg

I kept them on this and took it out to trade since the lanyards were too difficult to handle in the backpack.
DSC_3967.jpg

Nolan's stash (he was into it when he thought about it, Donald was his go to pin choice if available):
DSC_3969.jpg

Finn's stash (she was a pro and wanted to trade all the time, she seemed to like Ariel and Mickey & Minnie, although she totally wants to trade for my hitchhiking ghost right now).
DSC_3973.jpg

Autographs: I loved it, and got a mat with princess signatures and one with the Fab 5 (with Daisy missing right now)...can't wait to get them in frames with pictures. The kids liked autographs well enough, but were over them by day 4 and 5. My son wanted blank pages instead, which was a downside of the surprise aspect of this trip. Still, I'm happy we did it at least once. Here are my mats:

DSC_3966.jpg

Souvenirs – They picked out a gift card design the first night and my parents and I put money on it and I had saved their Xmas money and put that on there. That was all the money they had to spend, we didn’t buy them anything and I didn’t question what they wanted to buy with it. Worked great, they were very frugal and thought about purchases and they both came home with $10 they didn’t spend there. Next trip won’t be a surprise, so they will be able to save as much as they want for it.
Finally, Penny Pressing was a huge hit. I ended up buying the books for the kids to put them into. I did make them containters from M&M tubes for the quarters and pennies, but they were always jumbled up. Still, they were a great size to carry around, and I kept them ½ full so they weren’t so heavy.

DSC_3965.jpg

Next trip, the kids will have to hold their own autograph books (which I don’t think they will want), Pressed Penny gear and Pins. Lugging all that around was a lot. The string backpacks were uncomfortable, which is all that I brought for them, so maybe a little kid fanny pack idea?

The rest of my captivating thoughts on various parts of the vacation will show up in my wrap up post….eventually….

Ok, enough babble about stuff, let's get to Disney shall we? Next installment will be Day 1, which was filled with some funny and not so funny surprises...

What a great start to your trip!! I literally had the goosebumps watching the video of the surprise!!! So cute!! Can't wait we leave for Disney in just 19 days!! My DS knows we are going, but what he doesn't know is that we are leaving a day earlier then planned! I'm not telling him until we are leaving for the airport! :)

Crafty Time

I have run out of transfers and I don't think I'll do any more. If I did, I wanted to make DD and I matching Ariel shirts that say Mermaids in Disguise. And I found a shirt disign with Belle in glasses that look like mine that say Real Princesses wear Glasses. So, we'll see if my OCD kicks in and I JUST have to have them, but I'm running seriously low on time.

I'm so impressed with all of the shirts that you made. I'm not much of a crafty person so I've never really thought much about making shirt but your description of the Belle in glasses design has me re-thinking that. Can you tell me where you found that shirt design?

I loved your video !! Sooo cute !! Looking forward to reading about the rest of your trip !!

Oh, that is the best of both worlds! It is much easier to plan when you can get your kids' input into what they want to do, but then they still get an extra magic surprise. I may have to copy you on this one next time around. I'm already thinking next spring break??? Have a wonderful trip with your son!

I got compliments all week, which I really wasn't expecting for my solo shirts, and that made the week all the more magical. I totally recommend making them, as they are so easy. The talented peeps on the DIS Disigns board will make all kinds of designs for you, all you have to do is print and iron them. :) I ran out of shirts, but I'm making this for my next trip. Day 1 - Part 1 - You Brought WHAT in your backpack?

Let me begin by telling you my beverage of choice as I write and post this TR...

BTW, that is my favorite mug (it is the dewey decimal number for the subject of Tea, I am such a nerdy librarian).

Best. Tea. Ever. Besides tasting delish, look at the cuteness that adorns the tin...

Only Disney creates such magic! Onward to the obligatory travel post, I'll try to be as brief as possible.

We were up & at em early, like 4:30am early. We were out the door by 5:30, all crammed in the clown car.

DSC_2327.jpg

Notice Pascal in the bow tie? He decided to hitch a ride to see some of his magic friends...

DSC_2324.jpg

After a much needed Starbucks, we were at the gate at 7:15 for an 8:00 flight out. Kids were rummaging through their carry-ons and I saw a suspicious baggie in my DDs backpack. I pull it out this...

DSC_2343.jpg

and it is a Ziploc baggie FULL of the ladybugs they collected the night before. Apparently, she wanted to share Disney with ALL of them. The lady sitting next to us was mortified, with a seriously funny reaction. She was all like Where are YOU sitting, because I dont want to sit there and I think she was actually totally serious. The Southwest counter lady was very sweet and went outside and released them for my DD, because she was all worried about them dying, because putting them in a sealed baggie wouldn't harm them? How did moving objects pass through the screening?

After an uneventful plane ride with the kiddos, and I even got to read a little of my next book club book, The Chaperone, we arrived 20 minutes early. Some cute pics before we move on...

We detoured for this cute photo and the Hello Kitty Store and then I introduced the family to the Fake-o-rail.

Thanks to the DIS I knew exactly where to go for the Magical Express, but they seriously need better signage. It was quick, friendly and within 10 minutes we were here.

Yay for departure and arrival!! Wow, looks like you guys were crammed!! Yay for free baggage with Southwest! Looking forward to the rest of your TR!

Hi Cara!!! Thanks for stopping by my TR and lookie here!! You have an amazing one in progress. (love the 90s photos!) What a great family trip! We LOVE BLT. Haven't missed staying there in our last 7 WDW trips. I look forward to reading more.

Thanks Jill! Have you guys decided to do a Disney Belated Honeymoon trip? I loved that we could have 2 bags each for free, so helpful since I over packed seriously this time around.

Thanks so much Brenda! I am working on catching up on some of your older TR's too. I am envious of your proximity to Disneyland, that is where my oldest Disney memories are rooted and I can't wait to bring the kids there one day.

Day 1 -Part 2 - Text Wait Purgatory

When we left off, we had boarded a real Magical Express bus. This was our first ride on the ME, so we took in all the videos and comfortable seats. We were some of the first ones on, so we scored seats at the FRONT, baby. The kids really like the cartoon shorts at the end. The kids were both overwhelmed still, and were not very vocal about everything, but I knew the magic was soaking in.

DSC_2361.jpg

This one was special because when the kids were little we'd watch all these old cartoons with them on the laptop and this was their favorite episode. Especially, DS, he loved all the mischief Donald got up to.
DSC_2376.jpg

Before we knew it, we were gliding under this magic sign...
DSC_2372.jpg

We dropped people off at Wilderness Lodge and Polynesion too, and then we arrived at the "Giant Toaster" as my kids called it all week. Here we are walking our bags around the corner to the amazing Bay Lake Towers.

While I met David from Oak Park, IL. Home of my favorite architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, so good karma right away. He was very friendly and helpful.

We were checked in by 11:30am. I had checked-in online 2 weeks prior, so I was hoping to get into the room a little early at least. But, for now were locked in TEXT WAIT PURGATORY.

We started off with a trip to the Contempo Café to begin using our CS credits for lunch. Look at this view:

DSC_2389.jpg

DSC_2391.jpg

I had read about it, seen the kiosks, and thought I was ready. But, no, we were like every other newbie tourist trying to figure it out. What I didnt get is that you order on the kiosk, then get your drink and dessert and THEN check out. Luckily it wasnt too busy and the cast members were nice enough to direct us. I had Hot Smoked Turkey Sandwich with apples and some yummy mayo and homemade chips that were very good. Here are a few pics of the food, I apparently was too hungry to take pics of the actual lunch:

Our Lucky Mugs! We had more soda in one week then we've had in our entire lives I think.
DSC_2394.jpg

Coconut Chocolate Cupcake (my favorite flavor of the whole trip) If you don't like coconut, though, DON'T get this one.
DSC_2392.jpg

I began eating this, had to take DD to the bathroom, and the cupcake somehow disappeared in the meantime? Hmmmm, I wonder if Mickey was around sampling food.

The kiddos' first Mickey shaped treat:

Spied some Penny Presses to do later and then headed straight to the pool because we were finally on VACATION.

All caught up now. Wow I loved their reactin. So happy that it all worked out. Faces on children at 5 something in the morning.... priceless. :-) Someone owes you a cupcake and I don't think it's Mickey. CAn't wait to read more.

Loving the report! Such a great feeling once you get on that magical express bus! Makes the trip finally feel that much more real! Can't wait to read more! 2 weeks till Disney for us!!

We LOVED Bay Lake Tower !! Can't wait to go back again. Yeah, that set up at Contempo Cafe was hard to figure out at first. I got the ordering thing down, but I had to be told that we had to check out before our food was even made. We had that turkey sandwich. Sooo yummy !!!

Thanks! I agree about the cupcake, and I'm thinking a week-long Disney trip to go with it....do you think I could talk my DH into THAT? I'll call it the interest associated with the missing cupcake. And, he doesn't even like coconut, so I don't know why he felt the need to munch on my yummies.

Thank you! Only 2 weeks, that is SO exciting. Where are you staying?

So glad, I wasn't the only one. I mean, a simple sign put up before the menu board would take care of a lot of customer issues, but the food was definitely worth it. I am completely ruined for any other resort from now on, I think. Seriously, wait until you see how I used that short walk to the MK to my advantage.

Super cute pics! :goodvibes

Thank you! I had to sort through my 4,000 pics to get just the right ones. That is what takes the trip report so long to get up. I wrote in my actual trip journal every day, so the writing isn't the issue, it's culling through the masses of yucky pics to get those magic few that really tell the story. Speaking of which I gathering pics for the rest of the day as we speak!
