My daughter is sick/New update post 117

 Pea, well I am certainly glad to hear Mom and DD are healing. How scary for your entire family. We will all continue to keep them in our prayers! :flower3:

:scared1: Peanme you scared the youknowwhat out of me by putting "Final Update" ! Please don't use those words when updating on the health of your child and mom.

So happy to hear that everyone is on the road to full recovery. It can be hard to track these things down. I would probably be throwing out just about everything at mom's house and mine and just starting all over with fresh.

Yes, ITA w/Scrappy...throw everything in the fridge out. Start over. All new groceries. Peace of mind. Even if you are NOT sure, just time to clean everything out. ::yes::

:scared1: OMG, sorry, I never thought it would be interpreted that way!

 Never meant to scare anyone - just figured it would be the last time I'd have to update!

:lmao:

I did throw everything away (even things like cantaloupe that my mother had sliced), and went on major sanitation patrol here in the household as I didn't want anyone else to get it. I cleaned bathrooms twice a day with Lysol wipes once we were home with DD. I've always taught the kids good hygeine methods, but in the hospital and after arriving home I went over it again and again to be sure. DD understands about germ transmission so she's been very good - I'm observing. :magnify:

Same with my mother's. We have an in law apt. I actually tried to hire a cleaning company to come in and deep clean as it needed it anyway and I was just too exhausted to do it. My plan was to do the bathrooms and kitchen "first" myself anyway  and I was honest about having a food borne illness in the house because it only felt right. Nobody wanted the job so DH and I donned gloves and did it ourselves. (Was thinking that might make a good debate thread, lol.)

As for whether and where to buy hamburger in the future, I've been thinking about it a lot. I think, and I'm going to bold this, THE KEY TO NOT GETTING THIS ILLNESS IS TO COOK ALL HAMBURGER TO > 160 DEGREES, regardless of where you buy it.

Someone IRL suggested buying steak and having it ground into hamburger, but we know from articles like the NY Times one that E Coli is on the outside of most beef. Cooking muscle meat that has it on the outside kills off the bacteria. If you bought a steak that may have E Coli on the outside and grind it into hamburger, you're back at square one, so I don't know that that would be the answer, whereas cooking temp is always a factor.

With all that said, I'm still going to do some inquiring at some of the regular places I shop to see what I can learn about it. I might look into buying at smaller shops that use local beef as well. (To be honest, it kind of grosses me out just thinking about it. I know I said before that DD had mentioned wanting chili at one point, but right now if you mention hamburger, she gags.)

Linda,

I'm so glad to hear your daughter and mother are both doing better.
I will continue to keep your family in my prayers.

You mentioned being in the grocery store and about carefully thinking
about everything that went into your cart after reading the NY Times
article. Your sharing your story with us and the articles that were posted
that we could read too has certainly opened my eyes and I too am thinking far more carefully what I choose for my family at the grocery store. I am sure many others here feel the same way. THANK YOU! :grouphug:
