My daughter is sick/New update post 117

DD is home now and doing better. She still has some stomach cramping but nothing like it was. She'll be seen by her pediatrician today to follow her kidney function with blood and urine testing.

This whole thing started about a week ago when she got a belly ache. Over the course of 24 hrs, it got worse. Way worse. It went from a simple belly ache, to painful stomach cramps, then bloody diarrhea and screaming in pain. (Sorry if TMI, but I think it's important to know so if others ever have anything like it.)

She'd been seen by her medical team at the point when it was stomach cramping; at the point I saw blood, we went to the ER. She spent 5 nights in the hospital. (Man, those were some long nights.) She never had a fever.

We still don't know exactly what caused it, but the probable cause, in looking at the timeline, is a hamburger she ate at an outdoor event a week earlier. :guilty:

Kids are amazingly resilient. I kind of thought she might steer clear of meat - especially hamburger - for a while. And we've all been trying to impress on her that she needs to stick to bland foods for a while. But surprisingly, she felt like chili yesterday :scared1: so I knew she was definitely on the mend.

As long as her kidneys remain ok, she should recover completely. Hopefully she'll have no long term effects to her GI system.

Thank you, thank you, for your prayers and good thoughts. Every one of them was very much appreciated. :grouphug: :flower3:

I haven't been at the CB for a good while, but I linked over from your post on Photo Board..
Glad to know she is home and doing well, eating chili and all :goodvibes

Seeing our kids in pain is the worst!!!

Linda, I hope your daughter is feeling better and I hope she has
no long term affects from this in the future. I will keep her
in my Prayers. The power of prayer is amazing.

I just read the article you posted a link to from the NY times as well as the other letter from the mother who also had the foodborne illness. I does make me sick just reading it. It is very scary.

Just tonight I saw a news report on channel 4 about foodborne illness.

Another update.

DD is doing better, finally. Just about back to herself. Kidney function looks good. She'll still undergo repeat testing to keep an eye on it.

Unfortunately, it looks like my elderly mother may now have it. She was admitted to the hospital last night with the same symptoms that DD had. :worried: I'm asking for prayers again for her, because this disease can be difficult on the elderly.

I can't believe it. :sad2:

:hug:You're really going through a rough patch.
Thank God your daughter is doing better. My prayers are continuing for her and now for your mother.

Oh no! E Coli is even harder on the elderly. Did they eat the same burger? Good thoughts going out to your family.

I just read the above message. I am glad to hear your DD is doing better.
It is aweful to hear your mother may have it now. I will certainly say
prayers for your mother and the rest of your family. Especially for you as
the caregiver. Dealing with family illness is exhausting. I've been
there. :grouphug:

First off, so glad our prayers have been answered and your sweet DD is making a complete recovery.

Bless your hearts, so very sorry to learn your dear Mom is hospitalized with same. Sending prayers she has great medical care and the endurance to stop this terrible illness in it's tracks. Altho ecoli is very difficult on elderly, as mentioned before, my 78yo SisIL suffered a lengthly battle with it. However after several weeks wks. in hospital and a week here with us recouping, thankfully she had a complete recovery. Sending lots of prayers your MIL can beat this too! I know the toll illness can take on one, please take care of yourself too!

I am so glad to hear that your daughter is dong better, but sad to hear about your mom. Sending lots of positive healing thoughts. :flower3:

I'm so happy to hear your daughter is better and very sorry to hear your mother may have it. Do they have any idea what gave it to them?

We are now looking at some frozen hamburger that both of them ate, but the timeline on it is unclear. My mother had made and frozen some hamburger patties that she cooked for both of them, but doesn't remember exactly when it was, just that it was sometime in the last couple of weeks. They'll be testing them to see if they were the source. Otherwise, it could have been something else they both ate, or there could have somehow been transmission between them, we really don't know right now.

My mother is doing better today. She's 84, but healthy. Looks like a lifetime of immunity is kicking in and she's able to fight it pretty well. She was in a lot of pain, but she's pretty tough. They gave her morphine to keep her a little more comfortable, just like with DD. We're still awaiting culture results.

I got some much needed sleep today. I'm pretty beat.

My DD is doing very well. :littleangel:

Thank you all for your concern and support. :flower3:

Both my DD and my mother are doing better now. Mom has another day or two before she's completely back to her old self.

Both of them are still having their kidneys monitored.

My mother's cultures still hadn't come back last week by the time she was discharged from the hospital, but they felt she had the same thing so treated her the same way DD was treated.

We are no closer to knowing where they got it than we were last week. We may never know.

That NY Times article has really given me pause for thought. I shopped the other day and carefully thought about everything I put in my cart.

Thank you so much for all of your prayers and good thoughts. :flower3:

Thanks for the update and I'm glad that your family is better. I saw you on another thread and I was wondering about you .

BTW, I too am re-thinking where I buy hamburger. The freshly ground stuff from the butcher (all US cattle they said) is only a few cents more than the local mega-grocery store that uses cattle from non-US sources.

Pea, glad they're doing better.
I'm going to the butcher shop from now on for our ground beef.

Sorry you all have been going through this. I'm just now reading it but I will say a prayer for them both. Scary stuff!!
