Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

I bought some HFCS-free soda today at the store to keep in my office. It is called Blue Sky Organic Soda New Century Cola. I hope its good. I didn't have time to check out the cereal aisle because I was running late for work. I bought my regular Special K with berries to keep in my office. Is there anything similar that is HFCS-free?

Maggie

I do the Blue Sky ginger ale - but I haven't found a "natural cola" that tastes like Coke or Pepsi - they all taste more like RC (blech!) If you find one, say something - when I'm on a no HFCS kick and want Coke, I go to the Mexican grocer that carries good ole Mexican SUGAR Coke.

(Mostly, though, I just limit my Coke - and pop intake in general - eliminating HFCS is hard and, in my opinion for most of us - overboard.)

:hippie:

As many of you know, I'm keeping a list of non HFCS foods at www.stophfcs.com/list

However, I have recently added a message board so folks can share HFCS free foods, as well as ask for a HFCS suggestion.

I would so appreciate it if y'all would share some of your findings (info on this thread has been marvelous!).

There is a Message Board link at www.stophfcs.com or you can get to it directly here: http://stophfcs.aforumfree.com/index.htm

Please feel free to make suggestions. I'm a newbie when it comes to message boards.

Thanks!

Love the new messageboard idea. Bumping this so more people can find out about it and participate. I look forward to reading everyone's great tips and recipes.

Hey, guess what I saw at Costco. I saw a 24 pack of Coca Cola made in Mexico. It was in the 12-ounce glass bottles, and the 24 pack was $17.99. That sure beats getting them individually at WalMart! And I looked at the label to confirm - no HFCS

Thanks for all of the information.

My DH is a Type II Diabetic and the NP told him to stay away from HFCS. We went to the Bread Outlet today and were able to find one rye bread and one sourdough that didn't have HFCS.

I also picked up the Thomas English Muffins at Sam's. They had a cinnamon raisin Engligh Muffin for DH and I picked up the 100 calorie ones.

DS13 is now starting to look at labels too.

Good to know Kraft Mac 'n Cheese doesn't have any!

My son just had a fructose tolerance test which revealed he is intolerant to fructose. I hope to get an appt. with a dietician but would love to hear any experiences/ successes that any of you have had with this problem.

I didn't know they could test for that. Did he go to an allergist to get that done?

We are realizing here that our oldest ds is sensitive to some foods. After our Disneyland trip, we will be doing a food elimination test to pinpoint foods that are a problem for him. I am suspecting that wheat is a big issue for him.

I wish I could offer advice, but I am pretty new to all this, too.

We have been trying for 2 yrs to get a diagnosis. He sees a pediatric gastro doctor. the test is a 3 hr breath test. If you are thinking wheat they can test that with bloodwork. Good luck

Wow. There really is everything on DisBoards.

DH and I just started cutting this stuff out and already feel better. Thanks for the lists!

Well, fructose is just a sugar. High fructose corn syrup isn't from fruit, it's from corn, and it's made in a lab. So it's not the same thing.

It's so odd to be intolerant to such a natural sugar, though! Just my uninformed opinion, of course. :goodvibes

Yesterday we were shopping, and dawdling, and we were checking out the non-organic packaged meal boxes like Rice a Roni. Hubby and I ate that a lot when engaged, b/c all of our money was going to the "just in case my dad flakes and doesn't pay like he offered" wedding fund. I also looked at the pasta meals, which I ate a couple years before I met now-hubby b/c i was beyond broke.

And criminy, the corn syrup and HFCS content!...no wonder I gained weight while eating those things!!! The caloric intake was easy to account for, but still I/we gained weight on them, and that must be why.

Remembering that my family is more limited b/c DS and DH can't even eat corn syrup or corn syrup solids let alone HFCS, I just wanted to mention that we're about a month away from the anniversary of when I realized that my son had a problem with it. It was all a DumDum lollipop that spurred it, and it's amazing to think of how different he is now that we don't feed the stuff to him. He has still refused actual corn (we'll see if that persists on 4th of July) so we don't know if it's that pervasive (though cornstarch and corn flour don't seem to bug him), but he's a different kid than when he was eating that stuff.

No one else cares, and some of you might, so I just wanted to share the approaching anniversary. :goodvibes

Bumbershoot, isn't it amazing to look back and see how much you've changed things in the past year?

We're coming up on 6 months HFCS-free. We do still occasionally have it, and we sure can tell when we do! My oldest son is really affected by it - when he has eaten it, he is much more likely to "rage" and get major attitude. I've also noticed that I'm much less likely to get irritable than I used to be and the only real change has been the HFCS.

Bumpershoot,
I think that is great news about your son! I'm glad you were able to pinpoint the problem.

I do notice a difference with my daughter and processed sugary foods in general. We have pretty much eliminated HFCS and sugary snacks are down to a minimum.

We bought some organic animal cookies (Disney Pooh Characters) at Costco last week. They are actually Costco's brand. They're quite good and non of the nasty stuff!

I was at the store and I saw Smuckers Three Berry Topping and I was like :hyper:

I just knew it was going to have HFCS in it but NO!!!!!!!!!!!! Real sugar is better than HFCS anyday!

I know it still is not the best for you...but to splurge a bit:)

I had to get it:rotfl2:

Went into a Super Wal Mart this weekend (We don't have one near us). DS likes sherbet and I hadn't found one without HFCS yet. The Great Value (WM) brand flavors were HFCS free as well as a Good Humor rainbow sherbet. (They aren't in my regular WM.) When DS got a taste of it, he said, "This is better than the stuff with HFCS."

Thanks, wowsmom. I'm sorry your son has the rage thing too, but how wonderful it is to know WHY it's happening, and to have such a simple solution!

Thanks! And thank you for the cookie recommendation, too! Sounds good.

Yes, they are very yummy, we have been buying them for a while.

My son was very relieved to know there might be ice cream out there he can eat. Even more so that Ben and Jerry's may be safe. thanks for all the great suggestions. I've been waiting two days to hear from the nutritionist.

I've been doing some research and I'm amazed at how this is in almost everthing. I've eliminated it and feel much better and have started losing weight as well. I'm just curious is anyone else is doing this?

i was recently diagnosed with extreme fatty liver and the numbers for my kidneys were off too. This was a big wake up call to change my eating habits. i have researched diets that are healthy for the liver. in 3 mo. i have dropped about 25lbs, just from change of eating habits. i feel so much better. i have had only 2 restaruant meals and 3 cans of soda in 3 mo. each time i had them i felt like crap. needless to say, they are not even a temptation to me anymore.

I'm not convinced that fructose is the debil.

Recently, I've all-but-eliminated fat from my diet and pretty much said goodbye to my dear friends, Mr. Bread and Mr. Pasta. Those extra pounds are disappearing and I have lots more energy.

I wanted to thank everyone for keeping this topic active and for all the contributions.

I have been maintaining an HFCS free list (www.stophfcs.com/list.html), and this site was recently mentioned in Living Green magazine. I was so thrilled to see that word is, indeed, getting out.

If you go to this page www.stophfcs.com/blog, then click on the magazine image, you'll be able to read the article. :goodvibes
