Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

I'm fairly certain my son's first words that he learns to read are going to be HFCS. He says it "high frukorn srup". :)

Our conversations usually go:

"does this have high frukorn srup?"
"Yes."
long sigh..."why it have hi frukorn srup?"
"I don't know, b/c the manufacturers are lazy?"
"Does this have it?"
"Yes"
"Why?"
"I don't know."
"Does this have it?"
"No."
"Yay!"
much rejoicing, move along to the next item on our list. :upsidedow

Too cute - love it!!

My DD8 is fanatical about reading food labels for HFCS. In health class last week, her teacher went around the room asking each child "what one thing can you do to make healthier eating choices?"...most kids said "eat more fruit" or "don't eat as much candy"...my DD said "stop eating foods that are made with High Fructose Corn Syrup" and her teacher was so surprised by it that she sent a note home commending her. LOL! Proof that children's eating habits are formed by their parents!

Does anyone know if glucose-fructose syrup is as bad as HFCS?

I was at Henry's this morning and was looking at their sodas. I'm still drinking Coke and Dr Pepper, but trying to find a substitute for them, cuz I just love the flavor. Anyway, they had some soda - Sky something brand and the flavor was Dr. Becker. :rolleyes1 It said all natural but in the ingredients, it listed glucose-fructose syrup as the sweetener. I passed on it for now, since I wasn't sure if it was the same as HFCS or as bad as or not as bad as or whatever.

I tried googling it but all the info I found was way too technical for my tired brain to process today.

I thought I had seen that glucose-fructose was generally not the same, but I went to their website and online they list "high fructose corn sweetener".

I've shot them off an email asking them about that, and also about what you saw on the label.

Frankly I'm shocked, the last time I looked at their ingredients I didn't seen corn on there...

Have you looked into Jones Soda? They have some plain old FREAKY flavors, especially around Thanksgiving, but some people like their more normal flavors, and they don't use HFCS.

Thanks, Bumbershoot! I look forward to hearing their response.

My DH drinks Jones sodas when we eat at Panera. I haven't tried them yet.

I have tried 365 Cola (Whole Foods brand) and after having it a couple of times, I realized what I don't like about it - it has almost a licorice aftertaste. I did like the 365 root beer, though.

I've also tried Boylan's root beer and it was good. I bought some Boylan's cola, but I think DH might have drank it all before I had a chance to try it. :sad2: Guess I'll have to buy some more.

All my talk of eliminating HFCS has my sister now doing this with her family. :cool1:

It is almost Passover people-there should be sugar sweetened coca cola products in the stores now. Just look for the Kosher for Passover labels on the bottle tops. I think they are a different color too.

Thanks for the reminder, Punkin!

I did try Mexican coke back in November and it was okay...kinda reminded me of Shasta sodas from my childhood. Do you know if the Kosher Coke tastes similar to the Mexican coke?

I have never tried the Mexican coke, but I like the Passover Coke better than the high fructose corn syrup one. It tastes nothing like I remember Shasta sodas tasting. It tastes like Coke only better.

Oooooo, I'll definitely have to keep an eye out for the Kosher stuff then! Thanks! :thumbsup2

Did anyone see the special they are going to be having on PBS in April called King Corn? Here's the description:
Have you been wondering why Americans are so overweight? Or why certain foods are so cheap? Have you heard our average life expectancy is headed down, not up? Two college friends set out with director Aaron Woolf in search of answers to these questions and were surprised by what they discovered. You will be too as this film follows a crop of corn from seed to your dinner plate.

Broadcast premiere Tuesday, April 15, 2008 on PBS

That sounds good. I'll have to mark it on my calendar so I remember to watch it. Thanks.

Hmmmm, I wonder if they have it at Target? Or perhaps the regular grocery. No Weggies here...

It tastes like Coke only better.

That's how we felt about the Mexican coke. We tasted it at almost the same time, and we both had a Ratatouille moment, when Anton Ego tastes the food and flashes back to his childhood.

After that is when I had our Coke-fiend friend check his old bottles and cans for ingredients, and found that the pre-New Coke Coke was sugar, not HFCS. So it made quite a bit of sense for us to have that flashback! :)

I found some Passover Coke in 2 liter bottles at Ralph's today. It was mixed in with the regular 2 liter bottles, but had the yellow caps. Does anyone know if they just put it out in the 2 liter bottles or if they have cans of it as well?

I bought 2 bottles and will try it tomorrow and may be heading back to Ralph's to stock up. :cool1:

I haven't seen any non-HFCS Coke here in HI. I checked my Costco, no coke in bottles at all. I saw some bottled cokes at my commy but they were the HFCS kind. :(

There isn't much of a jewish population here in HI, I only see Passover stuff at the commissary and not out in town.

Looks like I'll be heading back to Ralph's...the Coke for Passover tastes great! :cool1:

I haven't posted here in a while.

I have recently found a brand that I have been very pleased with Full Circle.

I've been looking for a natural grape jelly, with no HFCS. I was having trouble. Finally I came across Full Circle brand grape jelly. It is pretty good. I have also brought their strawberry jam and that is very good on toast. :thumbsup2

Last week at our grocery store (live in a small town) they have a small natural food section. Well, they got a lot of Full Circle brands. I found a brand of Frosted Flakes, organic and no HFCS. Even DS8 loves this new frosted flakes. They have other cereals too but I haven't tried the others yet.

Today we brought the Full Circle brand spaghetti noodles and a jar of pasta sauce. Both are organic. We will be having that for supper tonight.

We also picked up a jar of pure maple syrup today from the Full Circle brand.

So far I haven't been disappointed with Full Circle.

No kosher Coke in my local supermarket. :sad2:

But I WAS able to find manischewitz kosher pancake syrup - I can't for the life of me convince my DD4 (allergy to HFCS) to eat real maple syrup; she just doesn't like the flavor. And of course there are no HFCS-free syrup products (other than splenda/aspartame, which I won't buy) normally sold in my local stores, so this was a good find for me.

Did you just look in the Kosher section for the Coke, or did you check the regular soda aisle? At my store, they had it with the regular Cokes - the bottles were mixed on the shelf, some red lids (HFCS) and some yellow lids (sucrose).

My mom used to make this pancake syrup when I was growing up. Just double check that the vanilla and maple flavoring don't have any HFCS in them. It's very tasty!

MOM’S SYRUP

2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1½ teaspoons maple flavoring
1½ teaspoons vanilla extract

Combine sugar and water in medium saucepan. Cook, stirring, over medium heat until sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and add flavorings.

I could not find the Passover soda today so but I will keep looking. There is a health food market that I get to sporadically and I think they have 100% fruit juice sodas but I have to read the ingredients. I bought and tried the Heinz Organic Ketchup today. It is so good! It is also so sweet! I really like it. The only thing I don't like is that it only comes in a very small bottle. That will be gone in no time.

We checked multiple sections...soda aisle first, then the holiday/passover section, then the kosher section. :sad1:

Thank you VERY VERY much for this recipe! I'm thrilled!!! I'm already making homemade hot fudge, so this should be just as easy. You're the best!! :cheer2:
