Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

Annie's Organic ketchup is available at Whole Foods and imo, tastes better than the regular ketchup and has no corn at all in it. My son is allergic to corn, so I am an avid label reader!

I make my own jam that is super easy although NOT low in sugar. I use strawberries, cranberries and sugar and it is delicious!

Most stores(around here anyway) do carry some HFCS-free sodas. Root beers, Dublin, TX Dr. Pepper(if you can find it), cream sodas, etc. Most are made with pure cane sugar.

Wow, that is an unbelievable price. I wish I had something like that here.

I've been buying Laura's Natural Lean Ground beef for 3.57/pd at our Super Walmart.

Do you have any farms around you? There is a website you can use to look up local cattle farms to you that carry grass-fed beef like Laura's.

TwoOwls,
if you know of that website, please share the URL.

I have seen a sign saying "Eggs for Sale" outside of a small farm. There is no phone number on the sign (I'd prefer to call ahead and make sure it's ok to swing by). I may just bite the bullet and drive in there next Thursday when I drive in that direction. :)

Well, I thought we would be in big trouble when I first saw this. But I went in to the closet and fridge to see how we stack up.
milk, Mott's AJ and Water:thumbsup2
Nestle Morsels :thumbsup2
Betty Crocker cookie mixes:thumbsup2
Betty Crocker Brownie mix with walnuts (mine) :thumbsup2
BC Brownie mix with Hershy syrup (dh) :sad1: :confused3
ritz cracker :sad1:
Raisin Bran :sad1: :scared1:

Oh well, I can survive with cookies and brownies!:rotfl:
But DH is out of lucky with his crackers, Raisin Bran and his brownies!!!!!!

Thanks op for posting this. I will definitely be more alert to what I am buying now! Definitely surprised me what passed and what did not!

This is a great thread! Forgive me if this has already been mentioned. In the South Publix and Target carry the Back to Nature brand. They have wonderful cookies, etc. I have been buying those for school lunches. I LOVE the new Dannon Natural Yogert!! :thumbsup2

I recently bought Back to Nature peanut butter sandwich cookies and they were incredible. I don't think my kids got very many of them cuz I ate them all! :lmao:

I was thinking of this thread today. I went food shopping and the Delmonte canned tomatoes were on sale. I usually buy all different types, Garlic and Oil, Italian Herbs, Mild Peppers, Jalapenos, etc to use in recipes.

When I checked the labels, the Garlic and Oil and Green Pepper and Onion types had HFCS! The Mexican types did not contain HFCS, and neither did the plain type. Unbelieveable!

So, I spent most of the time reading labels - and I thought I was doing pretty well before! I am going to check out my entire pantry tomorrow.

WHAT?!?! Last week I read on this board that I should eliminate sugar-alternatives because they mess with my metabolism and energy levels and all-in-all, they just aren't good for me.

So.....I take the advice of the "All-knowing DIS" and I ditch the diet coke and switch to regular coke for my caffeine fix. Now I can't have that either because of HFCS?? I don't like coffee, so I guess tea...with real sugar....is my next choice!

All this HFCS talk makes total sense and my family won't be too happy, but we're on the band wagon (as soon as my coke is gone! :rotfl2: )

In March your stores should be selling Kosher for Passover Coke. It is made with SUGAR!!! Stock up!!

If more and more people do what we are doing, and stop buying products that have HFCS and trans fats, then maybe the manufacturers will get smart and take those ingredients out.

It makes me so angry that COke and other companies produce products for other countries without the HFCS, but not here.

You should here my 6 year old with me inthe grocery store. Mommy does this "snack" have HFCS??? If not can we buy it!!!!

I think more and more folks are becoming aware. Did you know 4,528 have viewed this thread? My 69 year old DM is going to write to companies telling them why she will no longer buy their products. She is leaving Lender's Bagels after 30 some years.

Okay, I spent the day reading labels in the kitchen and it took me 20 minutes to buy jelly today!

I did buy Aunt Millie's Seeded Italian bread today without HFCS. and Marshmellows

Oh, and there is no HFCS in the 18 jars of Ragu that I have stockpiled!!! :thumbsup2

i would have never even thought about checking for HFSC.... and i am type II diabetic. i bet i eat a ton of it everyday...no wonder im sluggish .

i will spend my next day off going through my entire pantry...and will shop accordingly from here on out. not sure i can give up my diet coke.....but perhaps i can give up everything else....we shall see. anything to help me and my daughter not be a obesity statistic will be a good thing

thanks again for the info!!

My Butcher sells a brand of colas called BOYLAN'S. They are made with cane juice (ie, real sugar) AND they are sold in glass bottles, which to me, just taste way better. They have cola, grape, black cherry, orange and plenty of other flavors. They are family owned and operated since like the 1800's or something. They don't use any artificial junk, here is the website I found..... www.boylanbottling.com

For those who feel they cannot give up soda/pop (whatever you call it in your area). You may want to look into the alternative brands they sell at your local supermarket, a lot of stores now are carrying Jones Soda and Boylan's. I know Walmart carries cases of canned Jones soda.

I was just going to come back and suggest this. Write to all the "big" name companies. Tell them you are no longer buying certain products, and why. ALSO~write to the ones that ARE offering better choices and praise them for doing so! Encourage them to offer better choices without doubling the prices. :thumbsup2

Why oh why did I open this. Now I am going to be searching for HFCS free food.
Is there a list someplace that tells some brands that are HFCS free?
Now a ?
If I buy whole grain bread from the bakery at Wegman's does it contain HFCS?
Baby steps... but darn it is in everything. I do a lot of cooking from scratch thankfully- but Bread I buy. And cookies:sad1: We tried those newman's ones and they didn't wow us- but maybe I'll have to try again.

See if you can find the Health Valley ones I mentioned in my long post. I buy the double chocolate and the mint  It took a while to get used to the different taste, but now if I try an Oreo, I think "yuck!" - they actually taste fake or "waxy" to me.

The last batch I bought was actually off of Amazon, I bought a case and they often have free shipping on $25+ of their natural/organic foods (all listed under "gourmet food").

I didn't care for the newman's plain "oreo" cookies, but really love the mint version of them. :thumbsup2
