Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

It took into account the way things have changed. More kids than you think still run and play outside or participate in gym, cheering, football, soccer, baseball, basketball, etc.
There are more opportunities today for kids to participate in athletics than there were 30 years ago.

That is untrue. There are more opportunities to play organized sports. I was born in 1959 and all of the above were available to us, it just wasn't organized. We would play sandlot baseball for hours a day. Not the 1 hour a week that is now played.

If more kids are active now than in the past - how come the kids are so heavy. My son is 10. He is 54 inches and weighs 62 pounds. On the small side. Most of his friends weigh between 100 and 110 pounds and are only 2 - 3 inches taller. And they play organized sports. My son is always outside. I wish he would watch TV. He also has ADHD and sugar has no effect on the symptons. They would be there with or without sugar in his diet.

Hmmm...HFC is not in organic Heinze ketchup. The organic does have sugar though.

thanks- I just re-read my bottle in the fridge after seeing that post because I couldn't believe it had hfcs - and then saw your post too. Maybe they didn't have the organic??:confused3

My DS(4) is allergic to corn and a whole long list of foods. He had a liver transplant- we think it is a result of his anti-rejections meds but whatever the cause he has a lot of food allergies and it has taken a long time to sort them out. Corn has been the toughest to work with. We are getting pretty good at finding them and do almost all of our shopping at the only natural food store in Anchorage. I have found stuff on the internet but the shipping is so expensive :scared1:

BTW- Annie's catsup is also corn free. Another good brand we have found to work for us is Amy's Organic foods- they even make a dairy free pizza

I really think it depends on where you live. My son was outside yesterday from 12n to 7:20pm playing organized then non organized sports. Out of 22 kids on his soccer team roster, three are on the heavy side but even they run and play hard. One of the heavy ones is battling the weight he put on from steroids fighting leukemia. Yesterday, they played soccer for 3 hours, played basketball for who knows how long, set up an obstacle course that entertained even the 2yo next door and then played football in various modes until the mosquitos chased them in. At one point, I also saw them running wind sprints. lol! My son is 5'5", 12 years old and weighs 121 lbs of solid muscle. He will sleep til 12n today then do it all over again. I must be the bad mom and require that he do some school work. That will heavily cramp his style as he prefers to be outside on beautiful days such as these. Last night for dinner he ate a huge bowl of steamed vegetables- huge- and a large bowl of pestoed pasta with a side of scrambled eggs. No soda, just water and no sweets all day. This morning, I MIGHT treat him to a donut, fresh fruit and some fake sausage. He's a vegetarian.

Does he eat his waffles plain or does he pour syrup on them (made with you-know-what)? Mrs. Buttersworth has a good tasting sugar-free syrup.

My downfall is that I'm a pb&j addict. I've tried the sugarless fruit spreads and always fall back to the Smuckers made with tons of sugar!

No- I've been buying maple syrup since the kids started eating waffles. Even before I knew about HFCS.

Yeah- the jelly is a tough one. My ds 3 likes Smuckers grape jelly but he will eat PB and honey sandwiches sometimes. Luckily, they both like turkey and ham sandwiches too.
Ya know, something I haven't checked are the wraps I use for ds 5s roll-up sandwiches. Uggh, I hope I don't have trouble with those. He eats them for lunch at school 4 days a week.:scared1:

My DD3 is allergic to corn, amoung other this and it is very difficult to eliminate it from your diet. I wonder as people latch on the the HFCS issue if they are still using equal, nutrasweet, splenda, etc These are just like the HFCS in that they are chemicals or chemically altered material.

Ewww...that's the problem with HFCS- it's chemically altered,it's nasty for you,and so are these other 'sweeteners' -the only value splenda might have is for diabetics who suffer great harm from normal sugars...as it is less nasty than the other artificial sweeteners.....
How about some who've said to avoid drinking the 'unhealthy sodas' in the theme parks, they bring along drink mix ins full of nutrasweet,etc.... to add to plain old water......let's face it in that instance it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other....

oh,FWIW.... if it's choice for me between regular soda with HFCS or something with Nutrasweet or equal, we choose the HFCS....those other things are really heinous......

I think it's great that you want to eat healthier! :goodvibes I can't imagine trying this as a college student- good for you!
Here's a link to some some info and a list of HFCS free products:

http://www.highfructosehigh.com/nohfcs.htm

Surprisingly, there are a few chocolate candies that don't have it including Cadburys and Dove and some Herseys. Also Breyers All Natural Ice cream. There were three sodas on the list all of which I've never heard of. Ok though since we rarely drink soda and never at home.

Oh- and I guess mostly all cereal has it since Cheerios is the only one listed.
I'm sure these aren't all of the HCFS free products though but it's a good starter list.
Anyway, good luck to you. Hopefully we'll see more and more products without it since so many people are starting to learn about this stuff.

I think I may try this. What can I eat? I mean I still gatta use up the food we have but We need to go shopping soon. Are there any sodas that dont contain HFCS? I would be lost without at least one soda.

The Choclate sauce

Oh my, I had no idea.

I've cut partially hydroginated oils out of our food.. now corn syrup??!!

I am going to have a hard time maintaining our low food budget, if I attempt this. I will have to give it some serious thought though. Perhaps substitute one of our staples per week, or something.

:confused3

Jones Sodas don't have HFCS in them and they are yummy! Only pure can sugar.

I don't think corn syrup is the problem. Just the "High Fructose Corn Syrup". It's a chemical and the body doesn't know how to process it. It's being blamed on the weight gain Americans have experienced in the last 25 years of so.

That's what I meant to say, I'm a bit sleepy, and not typing in complete thoughts. :)

Smuckers organic grapy jelly does NOT have HFCS, it is in my fridge right now.

Flying Babyb,

Our Super Walmart has a pretty good Latino section and a small Kosher section. I am having good luck finding items from Mexico without HFCS. I bought DD4.5 chocolate syrup (Abuelita -- made by Nestle), that was much cheaper then the US brand and had no HFCS.

Most of the soda's were free of it too, but I'm not a soda person so I can't vouch for the taste. I switched to home made ice tea about a year ago to get off of aspertame.

I found some Kosher Tea Biscuits, also reasonably priced. And I can keep buying my Wasa crackers.

Oh and my favorite find (again in the Kosher section) was a natural teriyaki marinade/sauce calle Soy Vey (love the name!:rotfl2: ). High quality indgredients and no chemicals.

I just read an article today in Family Circle Magazine about HFCS. Apparently, it doesn't metabolize like other foods, and actually makes you hungrier!!! No wonder why everyone is gaining so much weight today!

On another note, my daughter cannot have artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives due to food sensitivities that mimic the symptoms of ADD and ADHD. We are following the Feingold Program, and it has completely changed my daughter for the better! Anyways, because of that, and the lack of chocolate syrups out there, I make my own "Hershey's Syrup". It so soooooooo good and so easy. If anyone wants the recipe, feel free to PM me.

Michelle

We buy most of our groceries from the perimeter of the grocery store (produce, meat, deli), which is what you should eat. For the occasional condiment or canned item we get those from Trader Joes or read the labels very carefully.

We like Milton's Whole Grain bread, which does not have HFCS.

A little OT but I thought I was doing well by giving my kids Ovaltine -my three boys LOVE it and it contains no HFCS. But- it has three artificial colors (yellow 6, red 40 and blue 1) which I am also leery of. THey don't drink it often though- it really is a special treat so I'll have to do a little more research on it.
Anyone have any knowledge about (or experienced problems from) artificial colors?
I've already cut out cereals containing these additives.
THanks

When I told my roomate we were gonna do this, Im shocked she didnt kill me. She wasnt pleased when I told her NO OREOS! Made it almost all day HFCS free :( BUT I lost it when I got home, Had a couple Resese cups and a coke.

Pauls Newman's brand of chocolate sandwhich cookies (oreo-like) are HFCS free.
