Hello fellow Disers! Thanks for popping by my pre-trip report! We leave September 30th for Cleveland.

Dining Reviews

Polynesian Review is on page 2!

So this year I turn 29 on 10/10/10 how fun! Not so much the turning 29 part, but the special date is a once a lifetime occurrence. I have actually been going to WDW every year with my family since I was about two years old. I have visited with extended family and family friends--which can be fun, but other times larger groups are just exhausting. My favorite travel mates believe it or not, are my parents. After all, they have been to WDW a handful more times than I have!

A little background on us…well there is myself. I am a 28 year old aspiring restaurateur; my hobbies include cooking, reading science fiction novels, eating, all things paranormal and taking long walks on the beach. My parents, Debbie and Steve are both 54 and they have been happily married for 35 years. I have an older brother Chris who is just way too cool for WDW anymore. Ha, just kidding, he is married to Stephanie and they have my beautiful nephew Nicholas, who is 5 months old. Hopefully we will get them down to WDW next year! In the meantime, my mother’s suitcase will no doubt be stuffed with souvenirs and clothes for Nick when we travel home.
Now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk details! I entitled the trip report A New Frontier because it will be our first DVC stay! We are staying at our favorite resort the Polynesian from the October 1-5th , then moving onto Bay Lake Tower from the 5th-11th.

Our adrs for the trip include:
Citricos
50s Prime Time Café- lunch
Il Mulino
Rose & Crown
Tutto Italia
Teppan Edo
Tony’s Town Square Café-before MNSSHP
Mama Melrose
Jiko
Yachtsman Steakhouse
The Plaza-lunch
Narcoossees- My birthday dinner

Itinerary:

We should arrive at the Polynesian on October 1st around 1:30-2:00 PM and with so much to enjoy at the resort, we never try to run over to a park on arrival day. I did not make an adr for this evening because with the timing, it was hard to judge when we would eat lunch too. My father checked in online earlier this week, so we can grab our packet and head over to DTD and grab some lunch and shop till the room is ready. We will probably head back over after we are settled in the room and have dinner at Paradiso 37 or Portabello. Then it is back to the room for some shut eye, so we can be ready for rope drop at the Magic Kingdom the next day.

Schedule:

Oct 1st: Travel day, DTD
Oct 2nd: Magic Kingdom, MSEP @10:00 PM
Oct 3rd: Disney Hollywood Studios
Oct 4th: Epcot, F & W
Oct 5th: Animal Kingdom, moving day
Oct 6th: Epcot, F & W
Oct 7th: Mini Golf & DTD, MNSSHP
Oct 8th: Disney Hollywood Studios
Oct 9th: Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom
Oct 10th: Epcot or Magic Kingdom

I will be adding more updates during the week. I hope you check back with me to join the fun!

We all have been working on our packing lists and laying out our clothing in the spare bedroom. I try to start early enough, so if I need to wash anything up or replace socks etc., we are not running around at the last minute. I still need to gather a few random items like the pop up hamper, dryer sheets, flip flops, my sandals and work on packing my computer bag. Other than that, I have placed all of our dining reservations and the day to day today plans in a binder, but I still need to make a few Mousekeeping envelopes.

Work so far has certainly kept me busy. I am certainly receiving many orders lately on my end, which is great. My family owns a promotional products and point of purchase display company, and generally we slow down in production in August and September. New orders will start rolling here in mid to late October to gear up for Christmas and the New Year. This time of year is actually a great time for us to go on vacation because it is slower. My father and I are pretty lucky to have a few employees in place that can handle issues that need daily attention. Usually when I come back from a vacation there was some type of shipping error, production issue or employee meltdown, but those things tend to happen on a daily basis anyhow. Other than that, I have my Blackberry to field emails while I am gone.

Tonight I am going to dinner with my bff Morgan, who is also a WDW veteran.

Cheers, Erika

Tuesday

Much to my surprise last night, dinner was my early birthday party! Morgan picked me up and we arrived at Aoyoma Japanese Steakhouse, where three of my friends were hiding behind the bar. A few minutes, after the two of us were seated they busted out from the back to surprise me! I was totally clueless the whole time, how fun. The entire room sang happy birthday, ice cream, candles the whole nine yards. That is the one thing I miss about celebrating my birthday at WDW, but it is priceless when your friends never forget.

Tonight I really have to buckle down on my packing. I need to gather up my accessories like suntan lotion, a hat, backup purses, bath room bag items, grab a few movies and charge my phone, computer and cameras. I have about 800 available photos on my card, plus I am bringing another digital camera along as a backup! So there will be plenty of photos to follow in the trip report.

Whelp, time to get back to work. Stay tuned for more action.

Cheers, Erika

Wednesday

I kept it easy last night for dinner making chicken Caesar salad and cheesy garlic bread, so we could get down to business on packing. I made a few lime green Mickey head key tags, gathered my accessories, packed my bath room bag, and slipped the MNSSHP tickets and gift cards into my travel wallet. I went to bed a little early last night for some much needed rest.

Today is much like yesterday. We leave tomorrow night and while there is so much underlying excitement, I have to stay motivated at work! I have this theory that when people are getting close to their vacation they kind of “check out” mentally. You know when you get a little too comfortable and slack off a bit, forget to finish off some paperwork, or let your calls go directly to voicemail. I know you’re out there, but I won’t tell.

Well tonight I think we are having my cousins, who are just getting back from their trip to WDW, over for dinner so we can visit. It sounds like we are getting Wegman’s subs for dinner, which sounds good because I have not felt well since my birthday dinner at Aoyoma on Monday. My stomach is upset and I am hoping it does not turn worse here! I will give you an update later tonight or if not tomorrow morning.

Cheers, Erika

Thursday

Well this is it--we are leaving this afternoon to drive up to Cleveland! I am at work putting the finishing touches on a few of my projects and making sure my assistant has all of my updated passwords etc., etc. I am leaving at noon to come home and pack my carry-ons and double check the packing list. My father will come home around 3:00 PM and we will pack up the car and be on our way.

We live about 2 hours from Cleveland Hopkins Airport. We could fly out of the Erie airport, which is only 5 minutes away; however not worrying about making the connection or losing our luggage is peace of mind for us. Continental has a hub in CLE, so a number of direct flights to Orlando, Phoenix and Minneapolis each day are available. We really enjoy the services Continental offers, but we are a bit apprehensive on what will become of the airline since the merger with United.

Tonight we will stay overnight at the Sheraton Airport hotel, conveniently located next to the short term parking lot. My b.f.f. Morgan informed me that she and her mother maybe staying at the same hotel tonight as they make their way to Toledo, so that would be fun to see them! Along the way we will stop in Mentor or the Strongsville Mall to have dinner, I am thinking Bravo! Kitchen this time. It is a fun way for us to start out our trip, no need to worry about cooking dinner and if you did forget to pack something you can replace it that night. One of us always forgets something-no matter how many lists you make, one item pulls a fast one on you.

Friday morning our flight departs at 9:15 AM, so we plan on catching the shuttle around 7. The screening lines are never too bad this time of morning, even with many business travelers taking early flights out of CLE. Our plane basically flies back and forth from Orlando, so we are not anticipating any delays associated with the tropical depression moving up the coast.

The plane should land around 11:45 AM, get our luggage, then we will make our way to the car rental and hopefully be at the Polynesian around 1:00 PM or so. I will keep you updated, check back!

Cheers, Erika

Great pre-trip report! Hope you are having fun...Can't wait for an update! We are thinking of planning a trip to BLT and looking forward to hear what you think about it.

I apologize my faithful followers! I have been having too much fun;)

Here is a little update from our trip so far:

Friday October 1st

The drive to Cleveland was not too bad, traffic was on the lighter side heading into the city. We stopped at Carrabbas for dinner and had a lovely meal. After that it was time to head over to the Sheraton Hotel at Hopkins Airport. My friend and her mother did end up staying at the same hotel last night, so we had a few drinks at the bar and visited for while. What a fun coincidence that was!

The wake up call shook us out of bed this morning around 6:00 AM. I did not sleep very well last night, I guess I just get too excited! We were all packed back up and ready to head out to the shuttle in less than an hour. Go us!

Today was the first official day of the new Continental/United Airlines merger. There were many suit types and extra employees assisting customers at the Continental desk. My father always checks in the day before, so the rest of the process went very smooth.

Security lines were brutal! The lines were backed up to the end of the Continental check in booths after were had been in line a few minutes. We made it there just in time. Normally we fly out on a Thursday and there were definitely a lot of business travelers for a Friday I thought. After we made our way through the lines, we stopped for a bagel in the newly redesigned food court near the security check point.

Our flight was full and we took off right on time at 9:15 AM. I went ahead and purchased the Directv service offered on the plane, so I could watch the Golden Girls and Supernatural! The two hour and fifteen minute flight flew right by. The ride was smooth and pleasant, but it took forever to get our bags at the claim! It was even a longer wait at the rental car counter, but we eventually packed up and rolled away in our Toyota Rav4. There certainly were many guests arriving in Orlando today, looked like a busy travel day overall.

After the airport:

It was 1:30 PM and only having eaten a bagel sandwich for breakfast, we were all very hungry. I suggested we drive down International Drive to scope a place to grab lunch. We picked Miller’s Ale House by chance. It is located right past the Pointe and it is across from the Helicopter Tours launch. It was a fun place with friendly, courteous staff. The menu offered something for everyone like sandwiches, burgers, fish and chips, shrimp, fajitas, and many other goodies. After a great bite to eat, we made our way into WDW property en route to the Polynesian.

If you are able to take part in Online Check In for the WDW resorts, take advantage of it. We walked in the Great Ceremonial House waited just a few moments and were already at the desk receiving our packet and Keys to the World, even my personalized birthday pin. The room was not quite ready, so we drove over to Downtown Disney to do a little browsing.

I did not plan a dinner for this evening because with the travel day, we never knew when we were going to eat lunch or how the day was going to unfold. We checked the menus for Portobello and Paradiso 37 after checking a few shops. By that time it was 3:00 PM and I received a text message letting us know that our room was ready! We made a reservation for 6:30 at Portobello and were off to the grocery store to grab a few items.

The room at the Polynesian was exactly what we requested, ground floor room in the Tahiti building with a Magic Kingdom view. I will have a full review either later this week or next after we get back home, so stay tuned for that! The room was gorgeous and in very nice shape. Just a few goofy things; the grounded outlet in the bathroom did not work, but we are drying our hair at the desk, so no big deal. The fridges still tend to freeze up, so we are leaving the door open for it to vent.

That night we went back over to DTD for dinner and dining. Check out my dining reviews for our experience at Portobello. After a couple of hours, we called it a night. It was back to the room to get some sleep for tomorrow’s early morning!

next on tap, day 1 at the Magic Kingdom!

Saturday October 2st

Magic Kingdom

I set our wake up call for 6:30 AM last night. My mother did not sleep very well last night because early this morning the Wine and Dine Marathon was being held overnight so there was lot of noise coming from the Magic Kingdom and ferry launch area, not to mention some large spotlights were on in the early morning hours! The three of us made it through our morning routine and phoned housekeeping to let them know we would be leaving our room early. We made our way to the Kona Café for breakfast around 7:30 AM and were almost immediately seated. There are not a whole lot of people moving around this time of morning, but by the time we finished our meal by 8:30 AM there were many guests from the 5K coming by to eat. The Kona Café was about three quarters full and only about 15-20 people waiting to dine at O’hana.

We rode monorail over to the Magic Kingdom for the rope drop
Ceremony. I would have guessed there were only a few hundred people there, it did not seem like very many, bonus for us! First stop Tomorrowland so my father and I could ride Space Mountain. It was down for refurbishment last year while we visited. The new queue area interactive game was pretty cool, but there was no need to play with it because we walked right onto the ride. Afterwards, we met back up with Debbie and walked onto Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin.

We decided to head over to Frontierland to grab fast passes for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, but there was no need to do so because the standby line was five minutes. In route to BTMRR, Frontierland Donald Duck was out, so I took the golden opportunity for a photo shot since there was only one person in line. After the riding Big Thunder, we hit Pirates of the Caribbean, the Jungle Cruise and the Magic Carpets of Aladdin. We walked back to Fantasyland for Peter Pan fast passes and actually received complimentary fast passes for Mickey’s Philharmagic too! We went back to Liberty Square and walked on the Haunted Mansion, then browsed the Smucker’s Kitchen Pantry. The longest wait we encountered was Mickey’s Philharmagic because we arrived right after a show started. After that rode Peter Pan’s Flight and Snow White’s Scary Adventures. We bought a few souvenirs in Sir Mickey’s, I opted for the set of three reusable shopping bags and a few other items as well.

We stopped for lunch at the Columbia Harbor House where we had the chicken strips, lighthouse sandwich and chicken and fish planks. The CHH was crowded, but not packed. The crowds definitely picked up since the morning and so did the temperature! By this time we were ready to head back to the room for a bit of r & r. The Move IT! Shake It! Celebrate It! Street Party was going on, but we browsed the shops on Main Street U.S.A. till we could escape. After a minor delay on the monorail, we were back at the room by 1:00 PM.

Stay tuned for what happened later this afternoon! Tata for now

We took a nap to rest up for the evening that included dinner at Citricos and a trip back to the Magic Kingdom for the Main Street Electrical Parade. We arrived early for dinner and were seated within a few minutes by the courteous staff at Citricos. The restaurant was quite busy, but not totally full. There seemed to have been a lot of turnover in the wait staff at Citricos, for I did not recognize any of the staff except for Boris at the front desk. Look forward to reading my full review next week, so check back!

We finished dessert and made our way over to the Magic Kingdom around 9:00 PM. The park was opened till midnight tonight. Wishes had just ended, so walking down Main Street U.S.A. was a bit difficult. Not very good timing on our part, but we had to grab a space around the hub for viewing the MSEP. We will put it this way, I am 28 and I have never seen the MSEP. I have been to WDW every year since I was 2 so this was a very exciting experience for us!

Around 10:00 PM, it was evident that the show was not going to begin on time. Shortly after that an official announcement came on and notified us that the parade would be delayed till further notice. We had already waited all of this time and had a primo spot for viewing, so we were not bagging out. Finally around 10:30 PM the parade began. Despite a few problems with the parade backing up around the hub, it was a really awesome parade. We are not big on catching parades, but the Main Street Electrical Parade was definitely one not to miss. It is old school and low tech, but I think all of us “old timer fans” enjoy something nostalgic now and then. Much like the way firing up the old Nintendo is more appealing than the Xbox 360 is once and a while.

We hopped on the ferry boat to the TTC and walked back over to the Polynesian. It is another early morning for us tomorrow at Disney Hollywood Studios!

Cheers, Erika

October 3rd at Disney Hollywood Studios

This morning we woke up and were ready to head to the Kona Café for breakfast around 7:45 AM. Since it is much faster than taking the bus, we drove our rental car to DHS and made it right after rope drop. They normally do not let you in the park up Hollywood Boulevard till five minutes to 9, so things get backed up in the front. The lines were long and about 97% of the crowd was headed for TToy Story Midway Mania. The fast pass line stretched past the One Man’s Dream attraction and by the time we received our fast passes they were for 11:20 AM. We jumped in the standby line and waited about 45 minutes to ride.

After that we made a break for Hollywood Tower of Terror and waited for about 40 minutes. They only had one side running till we made it into the boiler room queue area. The wait time significantly “dropped” after they fixed that little hiccup. We were not able to obtain another fast pass till 11:00 AM, so my dad and I decided to skip Rock n’Roller Coaster for now, knowing that we will come back another day.

We rode the Great Movie Ride in the meantime. Boy I wish they would change this baby up, even our cast member seemed tired of it. She was not very convincing! After that we used up our fast pass on TSMM and then hit the Backlot Tour before lunch at 50s Prime Time Café.

DHS had later evening magic hours, which I neglected to really consider in the planning. There were definitely a lot of people at the park early. They added a Fantasmic viewing for the evening too! Next year, I will be sure to watch that on the daily scheduling to avoid the busy pitfall we had today. Overall, it was a fun day, just an awful lot of people we do not normally face this time of year. Time to head back to the Polynesian for a little break.

October 3rd continued

I also wanted to avoid Epcot on the weekend, but we could not resist waiting till Monday to hop over here this evening before dinner at Il Mulino. It also saved us from the hassle driving over to the Swan and Dolphin. We were pleasantly surprised that Test Track only had a 25 minute wait, which actually turned into a 20 minute wait. That was a bonus for my dad and I.

We walked long the bustling World Showcase, listening to a little Off Kilter on the way through Canada. We strolled over to the Boardwalk checking a few menus en route to the Swan for dinner. Il Mulino was just ho hum this year, not sure if we will be back. The place is beautiful, but for the 3rd year in a row, I was under whelmed. Most WDW restaurants just do it better and cheaper!

We zipped back through Epcot avoiding Illumintations and the mega crowds heading towards the entrance to the park to leave. No problem, we will be back at Epcot tomorrow morning!

Cheers, Erika

October 4th Epcot

We had breakfast at the Kona Café and back tracked to the TTC to head over to Epcot by rope drop. We made way directly for Soarin and grabbed fast passes. The standby line was only 25 minutes, so we opted to wait as well. After that we rode The Land and Journey into Your Imagination before Captain EO started at 10:30 AM. Captain EO came to Epcot when I was about 5 years old. Again, another nostalgic time piece WDW brought back to the parks this year. It was a great show and I really enjoyed being able to see it again after twenty plus years!

The crowds were low today at Epcot, which was really a plus. We went back on TT after getting fast passes. We browsed through Mouse Gears and the old Wonders of Life/Festival Marketplace building. After riding Test Track again, we made our way to the World Showcase, grabbing a medianoche sandwich from the Puerto Rican food booth-muy bien! We rode Gan Fiesta Tour and browsed through the shops at Mexico, Germany, Japan, Morocco, and France.

We stopped for a little pastry from the Patissiee Boulanger in France having a apple tart, chocolate mousse and Napolean between the three of us. Later that evening we had a wonderful experience and meal at the Rose and Crown Pub. Read about our first visit to the Pub in my dining review! Tomorrow we check out of the Polynesian and move into our new home at Bay Lake Tower-check back for details!!!

Cheers, Erika

October 5th, Moving day and Animal Kingdom

To be honest with you the Animal Kingdom is not high on our must see list. We love to soak up the atmosphere and beautiful details the Imagineers brought to life, but there are still very few attractions that hold our interest. This park is still way far behind in B or C ticket attractions in my opinion, there is definitely a need for some basic dark rides. Maybe it’s just us or maybe it’s the fact that we did not grow up going to this park, it is relatively new for park years.

We packed up the car and said good bye our great friend the Polynesian Resort. After dining at the Kona Café, we arrived at the Animal Kingdom right after rope drop and meandered our way through the Oasis. The crowds were very light and we quickly made it towards Asia to board Expedition Everest. My father and I grabbed fast passes and then hopped in the stand by line, which only ended up being about 15 minutes.

Next we made our way through Asia into Africa, stopping to watch Devine along the way. We browsed the shops till we were able to obtain fast passes for Kilimanjaro Safaris. It was back to Asia for us to use our EE fast pass. After that we checked the little shops near Kali River Rapids to kill time before our safari was scheduled to depart.

Kilimanjaro Safaris never fails to disappoint and today was no exception. We had a really fun guide that took us around the Harambe Reserve. I love how the cast members try to keep it as serious as possible by saying things like “get ready for your two week safari,” etc. We saw the new baby reticulated giraffe as well as the new little baby elephant. Along the safari, we spotted a male and female lion perched atop the rocky plateau. The cheetahs were even visible today. All in all, it was a very active day on the safari.

After the safari, we browsed the shops and made our way to the exit. We drove to the Florida Mall for some lunch and a bit of shopping. By 3:00 PM, it was time to head on back to WDW property so hopefully we could get into our room at Bay Lake Tower. This is our first stay at the resort and first stay as Disney Vacation Club members.

I figured it may be a little while, but the wait was not long at all. By the time we were done checking in, I received a text message notifying us that our room was ready at 3:30 PM! Bell services assisted us with the bags and away we went to the 9th floor. Our beautiful 2 bedroom vacation home is overlooking Bay Lake facing the Wilderness Lodge. Visible from the balcony is the Swan and Dolphin Resorts, Spaceship Earth, The Tower of Terror, Expedition Everest and the Tree of Life!

After unpacking and enjoying our sweet new digs, it was time to start the trip to dinner. It was back to Epcot tonight for a little Italian at Tutto Italia. If you remember a few years ago, Tutto was going to be closed and renovated with a new Italian concept, but with the opening of Via Napoli, I wonder if those plans were scrapped? I hope not, because we had wonderful experience here tonight. Great service and food all around.

We made our way back to the monorail station to head home to Bay Lake Tower for a great night’s rest and full bellies.

Cheers, Erika

October 6th, Disney Hollywood Studios

I wanted to have another early morning at the DHS, so we could go back on TSMM another time or two, since the other day was so crazy. We still have to go back Friday for Mama Melrose’s lunch, but there is still a bit of shopping and the Muppets 3D for then.

Instead of driving to DHS we took the bus. We also planned to go to Epcot afterwards, so having the car was not necessary today. We had a quick breakfast of Corn Flakes and walked down to the bus stop at the Contemporary around 8:20 AM. A few minutes later the bus arrived and it made a stop at the Polynesian and soon we were on our way to DHS.

Arriving well before rope drop, the lines were log jammed once again at the entry gates. There were noticeably less people here today, which would make it a bit more enjoyable for everyone, if you know what I mean. We made our way to TSMM and grabbed fast passes that would be good in an hour. The standby line was much longer than the previous day at DHS surprisingly, but maybe everyone had the same idea about coming back on a non EMH day.

After being crowded a kitty, we made way for the Rock n’ Roller Coaster, which my father and I missed the other day. We used the standby lane twice because the wait was only about 15 minutes! That was a bonus. The wait for ToT was a little longer at 30 minutes, again it looked as though only one side was rolling.

To beat the time till we could ride TSMM, we grabbed a pastry at Starring Rolls. This place is why I cannot stand small counter service places. People are trying to cram in at each door and dragging their strollers into the alley sized nook. Disney really needs to expand them like the ones at the resorts or find a better way to have people flow through these establishments in my opinion. I realize space is limited in the parks, but the time it takes to grab what you want and check out takes too long= cranky guests=yikes!

When we were finished riding TSMM, we came back down to Hollywood Boulevard and browsed the shops. We took the Friendship 3 over to Epcot, which seemed like it was waiting there at the dock for us, how did they know I was coming right? It was a lovely 25 minute journey to Crescent Lake onto Epcot.

We traveled through the United Kingdom stopping to get a Harp Lager and Stella on draft, yummy. I am not much of a drinker, but that Harp is great stuff. My dad and I bought a cheddar cheese soup and chicken chipotle sausage with creamy corn polenta for a quick bite. Then we made it just in time to watch O’Canada starring Martin Short. We only live about an hour and a half from Niagara Falls and about 4 hours from Toronto, so there are many familiar sights on the film.

We decided to head back to base camp then and after traveling from Epcot to the TTC, we hopped on the resort monorail and went to the Grand Floridian Café for a more substantial lunch. It was back to the room for a little R & R. F.Y.I., my mother’s feet have really been hurting, hence all of the R & R.

Around 5:30 PM, we decided it was time to get over to Epcot once again for dinner at Teppan Edo. I thought we were doing well on time till the Epcot monorail broke down at the TTC! Eeeek, we have to get to dinner by 7:00 PM. It did not appear like things were going to be resolved any time soon, so we had to come up with another plan. We really did not want to drive, especially since it meant getting back in the resort monorail and going all around back to the Contemporary.

Since there are no buses running from the TTC or Polynesian to Epcot, they may have to get the guests back over that night, we were not going to be stuck in the rush, we hoofed it over to the Polynesian and had bell services hail us a cab. It only cost about 12 dollars to get over to Epcot, but just a minor inconvenience. I do not know what they did for the other unlucky guests, but I just wanted to be sure we made it to our ressie on time. We had another great, entertaining meal that evening!

I grabbed a little treat for myself after dinner in the form of a funnel cake, nom nom! We went back to BLT for another night’s rest. I decided we could sleep in a bit, since we did not need to make it for rope drop Thursday morning because we have to stay up for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party tomorrow night!

Thursday October 7th

We took the opportunity to sleep in a bit this morning, so we could stay up for the party tonight. We stopped and had breakfast at the Grand Floridian Café. It was great except for the fact that my dad ordered a ham and cheese omelet and received scrambled eggs basically because there was no ham or cheese in the omelet. I had to do a little switch a-roo on the lunch adrs for Friday and Sunday. I was able to cancel and rebook a reservation at Mama Melrose for Saturday rather than Friday. Earlier in the week I had to switch my Plaza adr from Tuesday to Saturday. We originally planned to visit the Magic Kingdom on Tuesday during our transition from the Polynesian to BLT, but we decided to go to the Animal Kingdom that day instead if you recall. I found the Grand Floridian concierge staff to be very helpful and courteous.

We headed over to the Magic Kingdom. I stopped by the Arribas Brothers shop to get a personalized mug. I picked out a design with Mickey, which was about $20 with my name engraved on the back. After a couple of hours, we walked back to BLT to nap for a while.

By 4:00 PM, we walked back over to the Magic Kingdom to get our bracelets. We had 45 minutes till our reservation at Tony’s Town Square for dinner, so we hopped on the Walt Disney World Railroad and took the circle tour. I went and check us in at Tony’s and a few minutes later we were seated outside, in the sun, in Florida! You can catch my review of Tony’s this week in my dining review. Let’s just say we probably won’t go back for now.

Dinner only took 45 minutes since it came out lighting fast, so we were on our way to enjoy the park. By a few minutes after 7 PM, there were only a few people without bands roaming in the park. We decided not to trick or treat this year because for one I do not need to candy and two-like I am going to save room in my suitcase for candy-ha! We walked on pretty much every ride, it was great, except for Dumbo-we waited 20 minutes. The parades were crowded as usual, but we were able to skip onto the Haunted Mansion avoiding the beginning and end on the first parade. The trick or treat lines were long, but they moved quickly.

I am a little on the fence on whether or not I am going to buy tickets for the MNSSHP next year. Even with our DVC discount the tickets are $46. I really love the atmosphere and fact that you can walk on the rides, but we go at a really good week for crowds anyhow. We are not huge on catching the parade and we usually catch the fireworks from the porch at the Polynesian a few nights also. Kind of something for me to think about next year I suppose.

We walked back to BLT around 10:30 PM.

Friday October 8th

We had breakfast at the Wave this morning. The atmosphere is a little odd in here, but breakfast was quick and tasty. The plan was to drive to Epcot and then head over to Downtown Disney for some lunch and shopping in the afternoon.

We drove over to Epcot, knowing that it would start getting busy this afternoon, but none the less-we just love the place. We managed to score fast passes for Test Track and Soarin’ in the meantime riding The Universe of Energy and Mission Space. After browsing through the shops and visiting Club Cool, we pack it in and headed for the car.

At DTD, we went to Wolfgang Puck Café for a lovely lunch. We prefer to eat lunch here, the service is better during the day for some reason in our experience. After that we wandered down the West Side stopping at Magnetron, D-Street Store and browsed the window at the Candy Cauldron, so mom could pick herself out a caramel apple. The crowds were not too bad for the middle of the day, but it definitely was not dead by all means.

We bought a few things from the World of Disney, Once Upon a Toy and the Christmas store, which turned into a fiasco. We were trying to ship a few things home and the cashier was trying to tell us the freight was going to cost $50 for ground shipping and I said “No Way-that is wrong, try again!” Then it was going to cost $24, but that was still a little high even with a charge for wrapping. It was normally around $15 for the last 3 years. I would expect a little increase because our costs for shipping have increased at work, but that was ridiculous. Finally she went to retrieve a manager and after about 15 minutes we were done with the transaction. I really do not think the cashier had any clue on what she was doing. A similar trend we found was that my dad was buying two cups of coffee from a few places each morning and the cost was always different. The same two cups of coffee would add up to different amounts depending on where you were. It was more expensive to buy at Contemporary Grounds, but at the Contempo Café and Captain Cook’s the cost should be the same every day. A weird inconsistency we found.

We hauled back over to the car and headed back to the villa to rest and get ready for dinner at Jiko.

We arrived at the Animal Kingdom Lodge around 6:15 PM and did a bit of exploring. My dad went to take some pictures outside the back of the lobby and I looked around the floor at Boma. We were seated right on time at Jiko seated near the flatbread oven and appetizer station. This was fun to watch all night. The service was great and my dad and I’s food was wonderful, but my mother’s filet was less than spectacular. Check out my full review on our experience here. After the meal, we stopped at Gooding’s for a few sundries, then back home.

Saturday, October 9th

We switched up the schedule to come back to Disney Hollywood Studios. It was extra magic morning hours, so big dividends to those who wake up early right! There were not many attractions that we missed than we wanted to see, but Rock n’ Roller Coaster and Muppets were high on the priority list. Also riding TSMM again was not too bad either! After some Cornflakes at the villa, we drove over to DHS for rope drop and made our way right for the TSMM fast pass lane. Today was even worse than last Sunday! After we received our fast passes, which were good in about an hour, the line was stretching past One Man’s Dream and the standby line was nearly at the same area till the cast members were able to get it under control.

We walked back to Rock n’ Roller Coaster and went through the stand by line twice in about 20 minutes, score. We noticed that the Tower of Terror was again only running on one side, so we grabbed fast passes instead of riding stand by. We caught the first show of Muppet Vision 3D till it was time to use our fp for TSMM. We walked down towards TSMM and it was now about 9:30 AM, the line was still stretched out to One Man’s Dream with the fast pass times for 5-6 PM. The stand by line was quoting 60 minutes. I was crowned a kitty once again, but that darn alien game with the rings is my nemisis-I do terrible that round!

We did the Backlot Tour after riding TSMM, which we have not done for several years. It was pretty fun and a big time killer. I enjoyed going through the set up back stage areas and seeing a few new things that they have added. You used to go through the neighborhood with the mock houses, but they cleared that way for the stunt show years ago during the Happiest Celebration on Earth era. Then we walked on the Great Movie Ride and used our fast passes for the Tower of Terror. We stopped for a coffee at the Writer’s Stop and watched the 11:30 AM showing of the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, which was totally packed, standing room only at like 11:15 PM.

When the show ended, it was time for lunch at Mama Melrose. Talk about great timing! We had a great meal of appetizers and flatbread pizzas and Buddy provided us with great service. After that we drove back home to BLT. Later that afternoon, we hopped on the monorail and went to Epcot. We did a little shopping and went to dinner at the Yachtsman Steakhouse, which turned out to be another snoozer!

It was back to the room for a good night’s rest for our last full day in paradise, which also happens to be my birthday!

Sunday, October 10th
We made our way from breakfast at the Grand Floridian Café to the Magic Kingdom for rope drop. The crowd for rope drop was bigger and with all of the Columbus Day weekend crowds, it seemed about right. Everyone seemed to be headed for Fantasyland, so we went for Big Thunder Mountain. BTMRR was down, so we rode Splash Mountain, but we didn’t get too wet! Next we backtracked to POC, Magic Carpets of Aladdin and then off to Tomorrowland. The Haunted Mansion was a bit crazed for the moment, so we skipped it for the time being. We never did go back for to ride it, but after riding Space Mountain, Buzz and the Peoplemover and having lunch at the Plaza, we were ready for Epcot.

We stopped at the room for a few minutes and to unload some souvenirs from the Magic Kingdom and we were off to the monorail. I knew Epcot would be totally packed with it being the weekend in the midst of a holiday weekend, but we still had to take one last tour around the World Showcase. By this time, my mom’s feet were really hurting bad from her plantar fasciitis so we rented her a wheel chair to push her around. We walked around the entire showcase buying those last few items we could not live without.

We dropped off the wheelchair and came back to BLT. I managed to catch the last half of the NASCAR race to see my boy Jimmie cruise to a 3rd place finish! The monorail was quicker than we expected and we arrived at the Grand Floridian Café early enough to take a few pictures of the grounds. We check in at Narcoossee’s and it was a few minutes till we would be seated. After dinner, it was time to head back for a good night’s sleep because we have to pack the next morning.

Sunday, October 11th

We rode the monorail one last time en route to breakfast at Kona Café. We came back and packed up, had to leave the popcorn bucket. There was just no room for the fellow, we were packed literally. The suitcases weighed in at 49.5 lbs! We did buy a lot of souvenirs this year because I always kick myself for not buying everything I wanted after we left. So I bought everything basically-haha. We had a bellman help pack up the car and off we were to the airport. So that my friends was the end of Mousetober 2010.

Polynesian Resort Review October 1-5th

It was no question where we were going to stay for a few nights before moving over to Bay Lake Tower. We have been staying at the Polynesian for over 20 years. There were a couple of trips in there dabbling at other resorts, but what can I say, we are creatures of habit. Most recently, we tried the Grand Floridian in 2008, while the ambiance is beautiful and it gives you that grand feeling, we still missed our dear little Polynesian.

Even if you were just stopping to visit the Polynesian you will notice the sign our front and the security checkpoint adorned with bamboo and the Bauhaus 93 style script on the signs. The landscaping adds small tropical plants along side larger palm trees. You will see the dark brown 2-3 story longhouses for guests and the resort bus stop near the laundry and Neverland Club. Grab a parking spot to your left and make your towards the GCH. As you walk towards the entrance of the Great Ceremonial House you will spot the koi ponds with small waterfalls trickling down the black craggy stone formations and the tall green plants and bamboo flanking either side of the double doors.

Having been to Hawaii, I can tell you that the resort really does make you feel like you have just landed somewhere in the South Seas. Some people call it tacky; I have seen tacky resorts, this it is not. Though the Great Ceremonial House may need a little updating, there is nothing like walking through those double sliding glass doors for the first time and feeling that rush of cool tropical scented air hit your face. It reminded me of getting of that plane at the Kahului Airport in Maui and smelling that heavenly scent of lush tropical greens, citrus and a light ocean breeze. Even though it is probably not the same smell, it still reminds of that other wonderful magic place, besides WDW. That my friends is the power of smell.

This year there was a new cast member position directing guests to open lines. Bravo, because many guests are arriving for the first time and are unsure of where to go when entering the lobby. Another family stood in front of us not knowing what to do, when the cast member came over and took them to an available front desk person. The Polynesian is unfortunately well known for having a slow moving front desk line, but the check-in process does take a lot of time, especially if the guests are asking a lot of questions or making changes. We took advantage of the online check-in, which became available a couple of years ago. Another bravo, our packet was all prepared, including our keys to the world, resort map, daily schedule of activities and my personalized birthday button! The cast member simply asked a few questions to confirm that we were in fact who we claimed to be and we were on our way. I advise using online check-in if you are able to, that way they have your credit card information and address on file and they just double check how you want to be notified about your room being ready.

It was around 2:00 PM and the room wasn’t quite ready, so we spent a couple hours at Downtown Disney. Shortly after 3:00 PM, a received a text from Disney Destinations notifying us that our room was ready. We were assigned a room that met our requests-Tahiti building with a ground floor room, theme park view, excellent! It was room 1033, located on the far right side of the Tahiti building nearest the Ferry launch. Perfect for us because we like the easy access of the TTC.

Some room shots, pardon our bags!

The room was cleaned very well, no paper on the carpet or dust. The sliding glass door could have used a little tlc because there were some hand prints on the window. I checked for bedbugs, around the back of the mattress, between the boxspring and in the bed furthest from the light and no sign of critters. I thought I would check just for the heck of it. The room smelled fresh and clean overall. The only few items in need of some help were the grounded electrical outlet in the bathroom and the cupboard door on the refrigerator unit was sagging. We should have called maintenance about the ground outlet, but we just dried our hair on the vanity. No big deal for us, but we did alert housekeeping to the issue.

The only issue we had with noise was the marathon that ran overnight on the 1st. Holy cow was it loud and bright. They had spotlights set up and loud speakers playing music and making announcements into the wee morning hours right by the TTC. Needless to say, we did not get a lot of sleep that night. Something to remember for next year!

There were a few tiki torches that were not lighting, but the walk around the resort at night is still amazing. The public areas were clean and free of wear and tear. The landscaping was well manicured and I did notice less carts buzzing around, which was nice. These guys were getting pretty crazy last year driving the Cushman carts all over the pathways and grassy areas. I actually complained about that in a survey they sent me last year, so mission accomplished.

We never did get to the pools because we were so tired at night and busy during the day. The quiet pool looked dead during the day, but the volcano pool was hopping most days by mid afternoon. The resort overall seemed pretty busy, my father and I overheard a bellman tell a guest that they had over 300 check-ins on Saturday October 2nd. Whether or not it was true or perhaps he was making excuses for why he had not delivered her groceries.

The cast members we encountered were very friendly and helpful. Mousekeeping left extra washcloths when we requested them and the room was clean before we returned from the parks everyday by 1:00 PM.

We dined at Kona Café every morning and had good service and great food. We could arrive each day by around 7:50 or 8:00 AM and still make rope drop at the MK or Epcot easily. My dad bought coffee from Captain Cook’s every morning, but we never did grab a bite to eat here, so cannot comment on the food or service. I did notice there was still a number of Polynesian Resort branded items in BouTiki for sale. The items were different from last year, so maybe the cut in resort specific merchandise will be more gradual.

Overall, a fantastic stay at the Polynesian this year. I wish it had been longer as our previous stays, but the BLT villas are very convenient. The resort was beautiful as always, it was nice not to see any refurbishment walls too, but I suppose most of those are at the Magic Kingdom right now! We are already looking forward to returning next year.

Aloha
