Am I the only one sick of reading this type of negative article?

Note that it's stated that the author own units in Cedar Fair & stock in Disney...perchance he's biased.

GE's Burnt-Out Theme Parks

By Rick Aristotle Munarriz
January 17, 2007
Darkness fell over Universal Studios Florida as the park neared its 7 p.m. closing time on the first Saturday night of 2007. My son and I decided to head out through the side exit to grab a bite at the adjacent Hard Rock Cafe.
It was dark as we left the crowds behind us and walked along the dilapidated production lot that once housed the Nickelodeon studio tour attraction. Just before we got to the obscure exit, which had already closed for the night, a pair of black cats darted past us.
Live cats? In a theme park?
I've seen some pretty wild things over the years. I consider myself blessed to have visited roughly 50 regional amusement parks all over the world. I just can't recall ever seeing cats in a gated attraction.
It led me to wonder whether General Electric (NYSE: GE) knows what it's doing. GE owns 80% of NBC Universal, which, along with private equity firm The Blackstone Group, runs the Universal theme parks.
Amusement Business had attendance at Universal Orlando's two theme parks dipping by 8.5% in 2005. The industry publication went out of business this past summer, so we don't have the 2006 figures, but most indications suggest that it has once again failed to keep up with Disney's (NYSE: DIS) competing attractions a few miles away. You can't blame it on a general tourism malaise outside of Disney, because Anheuser-Busch's (NYSE: BUD) Sea World Orlando and Busch Gardens Africa parks appear to be doing just fine.
The neglect is apparent. Islands of Adventure opened to critical acclaim eight years ago. However, beyond a pair of kiddie attractions that opened the following year, the park's owners have failed to invest in adding a new marquee attraction to a park that had so much initial promise. Its neighboring Universal Studios Florida has been fortunate to get updated attractions, yet it, too, is starting to feel stale by association.
How is it possible that a company as gargantuan as GE can let a turnstile magnet go stagnant? The regional players are always on the move. Over the past year alone, Six Flags (NYSE: SIX) has sold off some of its underperforming parks, while Cedar Fair (NYSE: FUN) has expanded its empire. If GE isn't willing to commit to keeping its theme parks competitive, and using them as the ideal launching pad for its fledgling NBC Universal businesses, I'd advise them step aside and let a dedicated operator take over. If you're closing your Florida parks at 7 p.m. on a weekend, it seems like you've thrown in the towel already.
From turbine engines to financial services to light bulbs, GE's got its grubby little fingers everywhere. If there's a reason why it's been seven years since a new ride has gone into its Islands of Adventure theme park, let's hear it. If not, then maybe GE really should stick to the good things that it knows how to bring to life.

Is there an email address for this FOOL? The park closes at 7, as I understand, because of the neighboorhood directly behind Universal. Sea World does the same thing....come on. I love how everyone can run a theme park from the comfort of their own computer. Arent we all just Roller Coaster Tycoons.

I could post the author's email address but, i might get in trouble here:rolleyes1

You can find it on fool.com

I don't like reading negative articles about my favorite themparks either, but...

I'm not particularly confident in the GE/NBC/Universal merger. GE said in the early stages that it would like to unload the themepark operations. Now we're suffering through the BTTF closing/refurbishing/replacing debacle. The Jaws scandal. A half-hearted night show. The closing of Nick Studios (not like it's a great loss). A rumored announcement of something being added to IOA, but that's a rumor that has been tossed around for years now.

A few bright spots tho. Some new stuff at Studios. The upcoming BMG show. Some new stuff on Citywalk. And a really good HHN this year.

But I'm always wondering if GE is just cutting things to the bone, finishing up the projects that were scheduled well before it took over (Mummy, the Suess Trolley). Just so it can make the bottom line look good for a potential buyer.

Don't know, but it seems Universal can't get any good press lately.

I don't know what parks hes been to, but I've seen cats at both Universal and Disney (Epcot/MK)

Is this maroon for real? He sees a cat and from there makes the connection that the park is being run wrong? :confused3 Oh wait! I get it now, it was a black cat.

He needs to have a look at this! http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1329740

with apologies to Mickey Mouse...

cats are way better than rats:banana:

I love Universal & IOA & WDW but we have definately noticed a dip in Universal's interest in guests since GE took over. The rides themselves are fantastic so we keep going for BUT there is nothing new. GE keeps getting rid of performers without replacing them with newer & better stuff. On top of this they keep raising the price of admission. The park definately 'FEELS' neglected when compared to WDW, which most people can't help but do because most tourists do both resorts during the same trip. I think the writer here is a disappointed fan trying to get GE to wake up and make the park the fun place it used to be, the place it could be. He is critical of management not the parks themselves and if his article gets one exec to change than it was worth it.

I too love all of the parks. My dream is to one day be able to stay for a full month so that I can spend all the time I want to at all of them. That said, I also agree that it seems to me the author is a true US/IOA fan and is trying to get management to wake up. It is seldom good when a company like GE diversifies to much. They don't need to get in to a business they have no idea how to run.

I worked for Xerox for 15 years and they diversified to the point of seriously diminishing what their primary business was and they have not been able to recover. I would hate to see the Universal or Disney parks go down hill seriously. I think we all would.

Theme parks should be ran by the entertainment indsutry, not the light bulb industry. :rotfl:

Anxiously awaiting my July trip to US/IOA & WDW,
Lori

Its clearly apparent to everyone that both IOA/US have been lacking new rides like nothing other. Regardless of this, Universal fails to realize this concept. Im sure they have seen the "other" article that was in the Sentinel.

Why would they want to build new rides when they can add a whole new show to City Walk for additonal money?

The author of this article makes the obvious statement that we have all heard and then runs out of things to complain about so they mention CATS? I dont know whats worse, Cats or people walking around with beer? :rotfl2:

By the way, Look at this thread that was on the WDW Themepark & Attractions section of the board today:

While I've never seen cats at WDW or USO, there are a couple cats that live between Jungle Cruise and Indiana Jones at Disneyland.

We feed them beef jerkey whenever we see them. I'm glad they are there because I'm sure they help keep the rat population down.

GreyStrOke - thanks for posting the link

The "wild" cats are probably better fed than most others:)

now what about all those darn lizards that run rampant in FL too! I've only seen them outside @ WDW but, i bet Universal's got tons of them:rolleyes1 (btw, my ds's tried to smuggle one home several years ago...glad i caught them before we hit security @ MCO:scared1: ).

Some day i'll tell you the gory details as to my story about the roach infestation @ BCV last Oct. and management's sorry lack of attention to it until i *itched a royal *itch in the lobby the next day.:sad2: The excutive offices couldn't have been more apologetic in their phone call after I returned home...eeew.

My point...anything remotely "bad" about Universal seems to be unfairly :magnify:

OH... MY... GOD! CATS!!! CATS!?!? CATS!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES, THERE'S CATS!!! THE FELINE MENACE HAS BREACHED OUR DEFENSES AND WERE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!!!! I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY, GENERAL ELECTRIC!!!!11111 OMFGLOLOLOLOLZ

I'm truly speechless.... well, I would be if I weren't such a smart@$$. I quite possibly haven't seen a bigger moron in my life. :rotfl2:

Its pretty common practice in Europe to use cats to keep rodent activity under control, perhaps that's the reason for the cats

Yea, it's a shame that this writer made some poor points in their argument, because overall, their main point is a valid one. I just wish they wouldn't have used trivial examples to support their point because there are much better ones to choose from.

cats.......what's wrong with cats........???

i have seen them there twice last year when i went to the studios.

i was told by a friend who works there a stray from the neighbor got in the park and had kittens. those kitties have been taken care of by some very nice people over at the park.

btw, i have 2 cats and thought is was great that people at universal look out for their well being.

if i could have caught one, i would have kept one of them.

about that article, i learned a long time ago you can't argue with an idiot.
