More negativity

Korie - yeah, I dont get the whole mindset of mocking a persons choice of where they go for vacation. Some people get off on trying to bum others out, maybe they are jealous, I don't know. I just want to have and create some momories with my son. Which leads me to...

I agree. I don't know why some people feel the need to pick apart what other people do, be it their job, vacations, etc.

My sister is one of those people. Every year I hear "You're going to WDW again?? Why??" and then I hear all of the negative comments about WDW. This year I'll shock her...we're actually doing a non-WDW Orlando trip Then again she always slips in the comment about how I'm doing nothing with my life (I'm a special ed teacher) so....lol.

I don't grill her on her yearly trip to the resort that I live less than a mile from. I personally don't get why anyone comes here, spends a week just laying on a beach (with little kids yet...that would drive me bonkers) spends 1 to 5K to rent a house for 1 week, etc, but hey I'm not paying for her trip so she can go where ever she wants. I couldn't care less.

Having lived at the shore my entire married life I don't get the beach obsession.

Yesterday at work a coworker was asking about my recent trip (last week). She has never been to WDW. She was asking me how many roller coasters I went on and I was explaining to her that what SHE thought of as roller coasters (such as at Six flags, you know MAJOR thrill!!) was not what was at DW. She didn't get it. I tried explaining to her what was there for rides and she just looked at me like I was crazy. She didn't "get it"

FInally I just told her what I tell everyone, you either get it, or you don't with Disney.

She said..Ohhhh...like a cult then?
WHAT??
I said uh no, just a fascination. She said no, like a cult, it's kinda scary when you think about it, the way some people love that place.

I just stopped talking about it altogether. Someone else asked me how could I have gone without 2 of my 3 kids since it was for kids anyway, didnt I need to grow up?

a cult? Gimme a break.

people have made fun of us for years (including our family)....
they don't understand how we can go every year for 3 weeks...they can't figure out what we do with ourselves for so much time..
i always ask them what they do at their summer cottage all summer long...
but they still don't get it...

whatever....if they don't want to join my cult that's fine with me... ;)

Here's the thing though. Disney has sort of become a cult.
No wait, listen. Disneyland started out as the embodiment of of Human aspirations and imaginations and in 2007, the Disney parks have become merely a way to get people to buy and buy into Disney's brands.

I sumed it up int my blog here:
http://www.july171955.com/b2evoluti...s_are_all_about_charlie_&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

Disney used to be about hope, joy and inspiration, now it's about autograph books, Breakfest with the princesses and who can buy the most pins.

There's nothing wrong with those things and there's absolutly nothing wrong with liking those things, but those types of brand loyalty activities do not in any way appeal to the average person. Back in the day, Disney was incredible because it appealed to the average person. Everybody got it. They didn't understand it, but they got it. Disney was like Apple Pie and coca cola. Now it's about brand loyalty. This isn't the guest's fault. It's Disney's fault.

You can't fault us the fans for appreciating what was great about Disney whether it's the old theme park greatness or even a reminder of their great characters, but you also can't fault the majority of people who don't get it, because really, it's not the same as it was. You either look past the failures for the Disney you remember, or, you're so caught up in identifying with the brand, that you can't see the difference.
That's kinda a scary thing, but then, it's no different then Star Wars fans who think the prequels are actually good, because lucas made them.

Yes, I agree. Two coworkers recently - one in June, one last year - have gone to Disney World. They both enjoyed it. Neither plans to go back. They both have the attitude, "been there, done that". That's fine. They also do NOT question me because I go at least once a year... and that's without kids :teeth:

I live in the South Jersey/Philadelphia area. Every summer people in this neck of the woods flock to the Jersey shore as if it were the Holy Land. They spend thousands of dollars to spend the week on a small beach with dirty water (My family is from St. Thomas-that's clean water). I'll never get that but I always say "to each his own". Never waste time trying to convince folks about Disney.

I was going to say exactly what eliza61 just said. Why is it okay for everyone to run to the shore every year...the dirty water, expensive rides, horrible food, and the crowds! I hear it constantly at work, you must be rich, don't you want to go some place else? I just say, have you been there? No! So please don't show your ignorance! We too scrimp and save all year long for Disney!

Thank you - absolutely well said. The above is a new huge thread topic for sure (that I would love to join in on!)

OP - I just wanted to tell you that some people's opinions shouldn't bother you...especially when we are talking about vacation choices. Vacation should be about making your family happy - and if that leads you to disney...then you should just tell this inquirer - it's where we are happiest...and leave it at that.

Its not your job to educate /convert/ detail your preferences them. Especially if its causing you this much stress. Don't sweat the small stuff - a wise man once said on giving vacation advice

"The true secret of giving advice is, after you have honestly given it, to be perfectly indifferent whether it is taken or not, and never persist in trying to set people right." ~Hannah Whitall Smith :rolleyes1

well it's not really causing me stress, maybe thats how it came across, it is hard in writing I guess. It was more of a conversation starter really.

CULT:
1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, esp. as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
3. the object of such devotion.
4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.

I say it applies. You are thinking of this definition:
6. a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.

Not that it is religious, but there is a person, ideal and there are a body of admirers.

I will be in the minority here, but I can see your co-worker's cultish point-of-view. Disney is not her thing. That is cool. :)

Many of the people that really do like WDW are quite defensive about it, to the point where they are even mean to those who don't agree with their POV.

I love all things Disney, but I don't get people being despressed because they cannot plan a trip or because they are back home. I saw someone post once that they were so depressed over their husband not letting them plan a trip they had to be put on anti-depressants? What? I think people like that could be conceived as cultish to those who are not fans of WDW. I hope that makes sense.

We do WDW every year and are darn proud of it:woohoo: I too get (especially from DH's relatives) the "you must be rich", "oh, can't figure out anything else to do!?" -type put downs but honestly, that stopped bothering me about the second time anyone said it to me. We LOVE WDW because of the wonderful family time it gives us. DS will be 20 and DD 18 next summer when we go again and they are just as excited about it as when they were 10 and 8:love: I know they'll each continue the WDW tradition with their own families and DH and I intend to make family WDW trips an annual pilgrimage no matter what:cool2: prior to our first trip, all those years ago, we had no idea how much it would mean to our family to go. I really don't care if some people "get it" or not, to each his own. What saddens me is that those same people who want to "put down" our treks to WDW usually do NOTHING as far as family vacations, so to me, they just don't "get" the whole family trip thing.
ASMo June 08--here we come!:thumbsup2

Well yes I see your point. I am not THAT obsessed with WDW. lol. The point of her calling it a cult was to make it sound like I was weird for continuing to go each year. Like I said before, I don't care if people hate Disney and all that it stands for, I don't mind when people tell me that they would never give their money to such a coporation. I understand all that. It is when they try to make me feel like I am weird or something. I had another coworker ask me a while ago "Don't you think it is time to grow up now?"
Those kinds of comments get me irked, but not stressed out or depressed.
My. I can't imagine getting depressed over not being able to go.

OK, let me apologize way in advance for this, but this thread just kept churning and churning in my head about us being a "cult", until it turned into something completely silly, and I just had to write it all down. Rather than make a really long post, I put it up on my web site:

DisneyWorld in a Few Thousand Years

Even if she doesn't "get it" she was way off base to degrade what's important to you. Sounds like she needs a class in people skills.

One way that I've dealt with the put-downs is to let the naysayers see my pictures. I don't subject them to a slide show or anything like that, but I will put various photos up on my screensaver at work. It never fails that someone will walk by and ask about where the picture was, or comment on how beautiful or fun it looks. When I tell them, I always get the same response:

THAT was at Disney? I didn't know they had that/you could do that/it was like that!

So many people who put it down, do so because they just don't know what it's all about. They think it's all Magic Kingdom and Dumbo and don't know how big and all-encompassing Disney really is. There truly is something for everyone somewhere in all that Disney offers.

I just wanted to reply to the poster who asked me if my son liked Sesame Place today. Me and my 3 11/12 y/o son went there today. He has been 6 or seven times and has a season pass. He was a bit sick today so he did not want to go on so many rides. We did go on the Big Bird Hot Air Baloon Race and we saw 2 shows, Elmo Treasure Hunt and Big Bird Beach Party. He also did some of the slides and we went in the pool where the water shoots up. He loves the water park there.

The park seemed crowed to me, we had to wait 1/2 hour for the ride. The shows were well done and he likes these also. I think this park is greared for younger kids, under 9y/o, but I did see some bigger kids there.

Overall, I would rate it at a B. It was clean, and was fun.

I guess this was a tune up for my trip to DW in about 3 weeks. I am expecting an A+ from disney.

That was me:) Glad you son had a great time. 1/2 hour for the ride:sad2: As for the crowds I think they get alot of camps/schools during the week. We got our first season passes last year when DS was 2 1/2. We went once during the week and several times during weekends and found the weekends to be much less crowded:confused3. DS really liked the Halloween Adventure last year and we plan on going again this year. I too would give Sesame Place a B overall. It is clean and fun and not overwhelming to the littler ones.

I'll never be mean or deragatory to those who don't "get" WDW. But dadgummit, when someone is deragatory to ME because I go to WDW every year, I get steamed. I take offense to the funny faces, the snide remarks, and the condescending tones, all of which imply that I'm somehow crazy, stupid, or gullible to like WDW.

Mostly I keep my cool, but I have been known to turn it back on them, especially if I know what their favorite fun things are (golf, fantasy sports, college basketball, whatever.)

I'll never understand why some people actually get offended by OTHER people's vacation choices.
