Count me in as one who doesn't get why a person would like ONLY Disney, but not other Theme Parks (like Universal...or Sea World.) I honestly cannot understand that sort of loyalty to Disney.
I "get" that theme parks aren't for everyone. Not everyone likes that sort of thing. That's cool - whatever floats your boat.
But, I have more than once pointed out to someone who is teasing me that they know all the sports statistics back to 1930 and spend many hours a week watching those sports while I do my Disney crap...and they buy expensive tickets to those games, go see them, talk about the games and players with others, read the paper's Sports section...etc. ...etc. ...etc.
Everyone needs a hobby! I like theme parks. So sue me.
Ditto. I love WDW and I think it's the best theme park experience ever built. But I am open-minded enough to try other places, and for years a trip to Orlando has not been complete for me without a day or two at Universal.
I feel like I have to respond to this thread. I do not get Disney. I have never been and have always vacationed in the Caribbean, or in places where there is natural beauty like the Adirondacks, N. California, ect. I have never been attracted to theme parks or man made, concrete attraction. I will be going to WDW in mid Sept for 4 nights with my 4y/o son. He is at the age where he likes doing the rides and loves the live shows. I dont mind going with him and I am confident that Disney is the best in class of theme parks. I am looking forward to going in a few weeks, but more so, looking forward to my 2 weeks in St John US Virgin Islands in April. I guess my point is go with what ever makes you and your loves ones happy and be open to new experiences if you can.
DJ Disney Kid - I am planning to do all the parks. I am not going to run around and try to do it all. I know my son will love to see the animals at AK as well as playhouse Diney at MGM. My son likes rides similar to Dumbo (he loves the DVD also), and likes lives shows so I want to do stuff like that. I am taking him to Sesame Place tomorrow. I want to see how he likes that also. I will write a report when I retun. I am sure we are going to have a blast!
I hope you will give some thought to what WDW is - a family vacation destination. It's not a kids place, nor is it an adults place; it's a place with something for all age groups, where entire families can go for a wholesome and safe vacation. By planning your entire trip with the attitude, "I don't care, I'm just doing it for the kid," you will probably miss out on a lot of stuff that YOU would love just as much.
If you follow the typical pattern of someone who mistakenly thinks WDW is just for kids, you will most likely look over the attractions and plan to spend most of your trip in MK. This is a mistake, because you would miss out on all the glories that the other 3 parks have to offer adults. Don't be afraid to plan stuff that YOU will enjoy on the trip; it would be a shame for you to come home and report, "My DS loved the whole place, but I was bored the whole time." Naturally you'll be bored if you spend the whole trip just watching your DS ride Dumbo and the Teacups.
I'm sure if I stopped comparing other places to Disney, I may actually really enjoy myself at those places. But it is almost impossible to do. Disney isn't just a destination; it's a state of mind and being. After an incident at Universal last year

, my DH "turned into one of us" and made the comment "man, this definitely isn't Disney". I wanted to cry, I was so proud of him.
What a shame. I constantly hear people on the boards bemoaning those who "don't get Disney." And pitying them. Yet many of those same people Don't Get Universal and are not shy about saying so, as if even the suggestion that Universal is in the same league with Disney is somehow a sacriledge or a betrayal of Disney.
Uni may not be Disney, but then again, Disney is no Universal, either. There are ways in which Uni is superior to Disney, just as there are ways in which Disney is superior to Uni. I choose to evaluate each place on its own unique merits instead of looking down my nose at either of them out of hand.
I "get" them both. I also "get" Hershey Park and Kings Dominion. And I think when I finally get out to Vegas, I'll "get" Vegas, too, and probably other places I haven't been yet like the Grand Canyon, Virgin Islands, Hawaii, or any other vacation destination. But if I don't "get" a place, I will feel no need to denigrate it or those who do "get" it.
