More negativity

I know alot of people that just dont get it....they look at my husband and i like we are crazy because we have not been married a year and have been there twice this year with another trip planned and because we have joined the dvc....oh well when we are enjoying disney every summer with our kids and they are at home doing nothing they will be sorry.

I feel like I have to respond to this thread. I do not get Disney. I have never been and have always vacationed in the Caribbean, or in places where there is natural beauty like the Adirondacks, N. California, ect. I have never been attracted to theme parks or man made, concrete attraction. I will be going to WDW in mid Sept for 4 nights with my 4y/o son. He is at the age where he likes doing the rides and loves the live shows. I dont mind going with him and I am confident that Disney is the best in class of theme parks. I am looking forward to going in a few weeks, but more so, looking forward to my 2 weeks in St John US Virgin Islands in April. I guess my point is go with what ever makes you and your loves ones happy and be open to new experiences if you can.

Hey maxsdad, are you doing all 4 theme parks? I'd be curious to know what you thought of it all once you get back.

Make sure you see Wishes fireworks in the Magic Kingdom if you do only one thing, LOL!

People are constantly saying that we should go somewhere else (my husband used to be one of them). We've done other amusement parks (i.e. Universal, IOA, Six Flags, Cedar Point, Hershey Park, Kings World), and they're all well and good. We've done Washington DC. But you don't get immersed in the whole "experience" as you do when at WDW. When you factor in the cleaniness, courtesies, quality and atmosphere that WDW provides it's visitors, it is so worth the extra $$. I'm sure if I stopped comparing other places to Disney, I may actually really enjoy myself at those places. But it is almost impossible to do. Disney isn't just a destination; it's a state of mind and being. After an incident at Universal last year:headache: , my DH "turned into one of us" and made the comment "man, this definitely isn't Disney". I wanted to cry, I was so proud of him.

DJ Disney Kid - I am planning to do all the parks. I am not going to run around and try to do it all. I know my son will love to see the animals at AK as well as playhouse Diney at MGM. My son likes rides similar to Dumbo (he loves the DVD also), and likes lives shows so I want to do stuff like that. I am taking him to Sesame Place tomorrow. I want to see how he likes that also. I will write a report when I retun. I am sure we are going to have a blast!

Obviously she has not been shown the secret hand shake.

My MIL loves to comment that our kids are going to be spoiled going to Disney as much as we do, and that we should take them somewhere else so they can see other things. We do go other places, we've been to the beach and the mountains this year alone (along with Disney twice), but to us and our kids, nothing is the same as Disney World. :thumbsup2

We live about 2 hours away form Cedar Point in Ohio. We love going ther and usually do just a day trip, and usually once a year, but not always. But cost wise, if we were tostay on property 2 nights and have 2 days worht of tickets would cost us about the same as 2 days at Disney. There hotles are much more than the Values are at Disney.
I see people give me the look too when I mention Disney, but Oh well. My DH still doesn't get it, but DD loves it, so I think he is getting better because she is his princess. He plans stuff now that he wouldn't normally do if he knows she enjoys it!
But I guess you can send my membership card to the cult out oo! :cool2:

Maxsdad. We have season passes to Sesame place for me, DH and DS (who turns 4 next week) we really like it and go to 3 -4 times per year, plus are able to use our season pass while in Florida to go to Sea World. If you DS likes shows make sure to see Elmo's World Live and if you DS is into to participating try to get into the first couple of rows so he can get picked to be in the show. Does he like water slides? There are ton of those to. I think you will really enjoy it. It's not Disney, but we always enjoy ourselves. Let us know what you think of it after you get back. Do you live in the Philly area?

KorieDWnut, from your original post, it sounds to me like that person is just jealous. They are jealous that their parents have never taken them to WDW and that they have never been able to give their kids the great experience of WDW.

Someone else asked me how could I have gone without 2 of my 3 kids since it was for kids anyway, didnt I need to grow up?

Response: "I have parents; I am someone's kid." Then, if you want to be nasty: "You must not understand Disney because you were hatched" or something similar

Janet - I live in Princeton NJ. My son and his Mom have season passes to Sesame Place. This will be my first time taking him. He loves the show you mentioned, the Elmo Fish ride, and the lazy river. He has his own names for all the rides he likes, very funny to me. He really likes Sesame Place and talks about it a lot.

Hi MaxsDad! I am the OP and just wanted to say that I agree with you 100%. I don't care if people hate Disney. I can even listen to them go on and on about how and why they hate Disney or don't "get" Disney. What bothers me are the people like people I know "in real life" that make it a point to put me down for having a slight obsession with it. Many people swear by cruises. I went on one once (of course it was Disney lol) and I just didn't care for it. I found myself so bored and I just roamed the boat and ate, sat around, and ate, saw some shows, and ate. Then we went to the beach and sat, and ate. I am not a sit down person, I need to go go go but I love atmostphere.

Actually, the more people who don't go to WDW, the better for me. lol The less crowded the better, believe me, I don't try to convert people, I just want them to leave me alone about it. Someone else mentioned those that go to Vegas, my parents for example. They love it and go 3-4 times a year!! While it is not something I would choose to spend time and money on, I understand they have a fascination with the place so I wouldn't tell them they are crazy or wasting their money .

I hope you have a great time! I hope you post your thoughts when you return!!

My dh was one of those people too. When we met he was all "I went once when I was little and I didn't see what the big deal is and I have no desire or ambition to go again"

I finally (after 3 years and 2 trips without him) got him to go and his mind was totally blown. lol Ever since he has tried to make sure we go regularly. Once we had kids he is the first one to mention the next trip. I just got back last week from a quickie trip with my mom and dd and when I got back he was SOOO jealous but said we will wait till next year to all go. I showed him a video from a tri we took 4 years ago and now he is all eager and gung ho to go again, that is why my ticker says "maybe". We are just waiting to see what the air fares do in the next few weeks.

Count me in as one who doesn't get why a person would like ONLY Disney, but not other Theme Parks (like Universal...or Sea World.) I honestly cannot understand that sort of loyalty to Disney.

I "get" that theme parks aren't for everyone. Not everyone likes that sort of thing. That's cool - whatever floats your boat.

But, I have more than once pointed out to someone who is teasing me that they know all the sports statistics back to 1930 and spend many hours a week watching those sports while I do my Disney crap...and they buy expensive tickets to those games, go see them, talk about the games and players with others, read the paper's Sports section...etc. ...etc. ...etc.

Everyone needs a hobby! I like theme parks. So sue me.

Ditto. I love WDW and I think it's the best theme park experience ever built. But I am open-minded enough to try other places, and for years a trip to Orlando has not been complete for me without a day or two at Universal.

I hope you will give some thought to what WDW is - a family vacation destination. It's not a kids place, nor is it an adults place; it's a place with something for all age groups, where entire families can go for a wholesome and safe vacation. By planning your entire trip with the attitude, "I don't care, I'm just doing it for the kid," you will probably miss out on a lot of stuff that YOU would love just as much.

If you follow the typical pattern of someone who mistakenly thinks WDW is just for kids, you will most likely look over the attractions and plan to spend most of your trip in MK. This is a mistake, because you would miss out on all the glories that the other 3 parks have to offer adults. Don't be afraid to plan stuff that YOU will enjoy on the trip; it would be a shame for you to come home and report, "My DS loved the whole place, but I was bored the whole time." Naturally you'll be bored if you spend the whole trip just watching your DS ride Dumbo and the Teacups.

What a shame. I constantly hear people on the boards bemoaning those who "don't get Disney." And pitying them. Yet many of those same people Don't Get Universal and are not shy about saying so, as if even the suggestion that Universal is in the same league with Disney is somehow a sacriledge or a betrayal of Disney.

Uni may not be Disney, but then again, Disney is no Universal, either. There are ways in which Uni is superior to Disney, just as there are ways in which Disney is superior to Uni. I choose to evaluate each place on its own unique merits instead of looking down my nose at either of them out of hand.

I "get" them both. I also "get" Hershey Park and Kings Dominion. And I think when I finally get out to Vegas, I'll "get" Vegas, too, and probably other places I haven't been yet like the Grand Canyon, Virgin Islands, Hawaii, or any other vacation destination. But if I don't "get" a place, I will feel no need to denigrate it or those who do "get" it.

PS...I would say calling it a "cult" is a little strong.

In my experiences I know people who go to Colorado each year. Why? Because they like it and it makes them happy.

I know people who go to Vegas every year. Why? Because they like it and it makes them happy.

I know people who take a cruise each year in the Caribbean. Why? Because they like it and it makes them happy.

I know people who visit Branson, MO each year. Why? Because they like it and it makes them happy.

I know people who take a golf vacation to Phoenix each year. Why? Because they like it and it makes them happy.

See the pattern...? The only thing to "get" is that people tend to like to do things they find enjoyable. So if someone finds going to "fill in the blank" each year enjoyable...more power to them!!! :cool2:

KorieDWnut as others have pointed out it sounds like others might be jealous. Everyone at my work knows that this is a big deal and they smile knowing I'm going to be running around like a kid the whole time I'm there. Fortunately for me none of them question my motives. At the same time you can tell they don't get the magic. I have a Co-Worker who is a bit of a Vegas Freak so she understands the need to be there to a degree.

There just is no place like WDW. Until someone has the chance to let themselves go there then there is just no way to save them :).

My parents crack me up because we talk about Disney trips for months up till we go. They are soooo happy when that time comes because they think they will be free from the conversation being consumed by Disney talk......

However when we return it just gets worse for them :).... We talk about all we did and what we will do next time :lmao: :rotfl2: :thumbsup2

She said..Ohhhh...like a cult then?
WHAT??
I said uh no, just a fascination. She said no, like a cult, it's kinda scary when you think about it, the way some people love that place.

:worship: ::MickeyMo

:drinking1 the kool-aid

I don't find the term cult offensive. I have seen people throw around the word cult for things they don't understand and scare them, like other religions. But to be scared of people that like to have good clean fun on vacation is a bit strange IMO. Maybe she has a fear of characters in costume? Or had a bad childhood reaction to Bambi?

Korie - yeah, I dont get the whole mindset of mocking a persons choice of where they go for vacation. Some people get off on trying to bum others out, maybe they are jealous, I don't know. I just want to have and create some momories with my son. Which leads me to...

WillCAD - I have planned some special meals and things like that, but since it is during the time of free dinning, it was hard to get all the things I wanted. Since it is just me and my son, I plan to do the things he would like. I will go on the rides with him. I'm sure we will have a lot of fun together.

Funny thing is that my wife and I enjoy Disney a great deal, been to WDW and DL many times, had APs to DL too. I was able to take most of my senior staff to WDW in 2005 for a conference, only one of them understood the whole Disney magic - the rest just didn't get it. I gave up trying to talk to them about it or even hanging out in the parks with them. When I told them we were going back this December they each made a comment like, you were just there 2 years ago... some people just don't get it.
