More negativity

People who don't "get it" never will, and they're going to poke fun at those who do. I've given up trying to justify, explain and defend at this point. My approach now is to beat them to the punch by poking fun at myself "Disney, of course," and just not taking it so seriously.

I disagree with the poster who said Disney is no longer about joy, inspiration and hope. If it wasn't about those things, we wouldn't be so willing to put up with the mockery we get from our peers every time we make a trip! ;) Yes, there are princess breakfasts and autograph books, but they're only there as props. The real star is "Disney magic" which is just as intangible as joy and hope.

Thats OK. The more people who "don't get it" just means there will be less people on line ahead of me.:thumbsup2

Mouse Worshiping Cult member Over Here :wave2:

I just stop Talking to people who dont get it.....I have had enough of the You are going again or the Its such a waste of time and me trying to make some one Get it......Whats Important to me is that Hubby gets it and My two girls get it and they all know mommy is a Proud Mouse Worshiping Cult member....ask my girls who are 6 & 3 were mommy's happy place is and they can tell you exactly,lol.........its true not everyone will......but thats Ok.....I dont get the trip my friends take every year to the beach , Same Condo, same Beach Every year, that would be boring Huh!!!LOLLOLLOL

I have people I work with tell me I go to much all the time. It gets very annoying. Especially since I go solo a lot, and they always think that's even wierder then going at all, which they don't "get" because I'm an adult, I've already been there before, and you know, why don't I do something different or new.

Here's the way I see it. Everytime I go I do something different and / or new. When I went in 1998 it was my first trip, when I went in 1999 I went to AK for the first time, and had my first Disney cruise. When I went in 2005 I went to my first (and second) MNSSHP, as well as being there for the Food and Wine Festival for the first time, and attended my first Party for the Senses, and I tried more then a dozen new-for-me restaurants, and several new attractions. When I went in 2006, it was my first time in December, and my first time in Disney with all the holiday decorations, MVMCP, CP, the Osborne lights, and I tried a bunch of new-to-me restaurants and attractions. When I went in February it was my first time being in Disney on my birthday, my first Pirate and Princess Party. Now I'm going again next month for the "same" thing, but IMO it's going to be completely different then my previous five trips, I'll be attending my first Sweet Sunday, and be eating at Chef Mickey's and Flying Fish for the first time. Sure there's not a lot of "new" things since Feb, but it's new and different enough for me. ;)

But if you tell us, it won't be a secret anymore.

I agree. I don't know why some people feel the need to pick apart what other people do, be it their job, vacations, etc.

My sister is one of those people. Every year I hear "You're going to WDW again?? Why??" and then I hear all of the negative comments about WDW. This year I'll shock her...we're actually doing a non-WDW Orlando trip Then again she always slips in the comment about how I'm doing nothing with my life (I'm a special ed teacher) so....lol.

I don't grill her on her yearly trip to the resort that I live less than a mile from. I personally don't get why anyone comes here, spends a week just laying on a beach (with little kids yet...that would drive me bonkers) spends 1 to 5K to rent a house for 1 week, etc, but hey I'm not paying for her trip so she can go where ever she wants. I couldn't care less.

Having lived at the shore my entire married life I don't get the beach obsession.
Yeah, me neither. I mean, I love the ocean but I couldn't spend a whole week just lying on the beach. I live in the Ocean State though-so maybe that's why I'm not all that impressed with spending my whole vacation there! I think a lot of the negativity springs from the fact that there are a lot of unhappy, cranky, bitter people in this world and when such people see others enthused and happy about something, they feel the need to shoot it down. I feel pity for these types of people and a sense of relief that they won't be at WDW getting in my way!:yay:

I've never gotten what's so great about a whole week at the beach either. I like a few days or a long weekend, but a whole week? Though my grandparents always like to rent a house for a week, and have all their kids and grandkids together, I always go, but I always try and get them to want to go to Disney. :rolleyes1

I went to WDW when I was 11yr old. This was my first and last as a kid. When I had my first son I bought a disney sing-a-long tape that had the characters in the MK (not a cartoon). I fed him at night watching the tape telling him I couldn't wait till he was old enough that I could take him to disney with tears rolling down my face. Well DS was 8 and DS#2 was 4 for our first trip to WDW. We were standing in the front of MK when the train showed up with Mickey and the gang...and I lost it...bubbling like a baby, so happy that we finally made it. That whole vacation was so wonderful. The magic that is DISNEY is unbelievable. pixiedust: It's not just rides...they are attractions. Its like everything is a show and everyone is a kid again. Long story short on the plane ride home I was beaming and said to my DH I don't care if we have to remortgage the house, we are coming back in 2 years. We only waited 1.5 years and again another 1.5 years. I feel sorry for the kids who's parents feel that it is just another amusement park and don't even give it a try. But like others have said the lines will be shorter if they stay home.:thumbsup2

I'd like to sign up for the cult meetings!!!:rotfl2:

...I feel sorry for the kids who's parents feel that it is just another amusement park and don't even give it a try.

I always half kiddingly tell my mom that I know why my Uncle (her brother) and his wife and daughter aren't closeknit - they never took their only child to Disney World....EVER!!! And it certainly wasn't a money issue - they have plenty of it but just never felt the need to take her there. Seems un-American to me! But this is coming from someone whose parents took them to Disney World whenever they could affford to growing up ;)

Well yes I see your point. I am not THAT obsessed with WDW. lol. The point of her calling it a cult was to make it sound like I was weird for continuing to go each year. Like I said before, I don't care if people hate Disney and all that it stands for, I don't mind when people tell me that they would never give their money to such a coporation. I understand all that. It is when they try to make me feel like I am weird or something. I had another coworker ask me a while ago "Don't you think it is time to grow up now?"
Those kinds of comments get me irked, but not stressed out or depressed.
My. I can't imagine getting depressed over not being able to go.

Girl, I hear ya!!! :thumbsup2

But you are not weird and I think your co-worker is a bit envious. ;)

I'll never be mean or deragatory to those who don't "get" WDW. But dadgummit, when someone is deragatory to ME because I go to WDW every year, I get steamed. I take offense to the funny faces, the snide remarks, and the condescending tones, all of which imply that I'm somehow crazy, stupid, or gullible to like WDW.

Mostly I keep my cool, but I have been known to turn it back on them, especially if I know what their favorite fun things are (golf, fantasy sports, college basketball, whatever.)

Well, I just cannot imagine anybody being mean to you anyway. I think you are a very kind person, even when you disagree. :)

I think the faces, tones and snide remarks are offensive too. One of my aunts makes it a point to tell me I need to expand my horizons. I am respectful and tell her that she can go where she wants and I will go where I want and I just smile. :) I would not waste my money to go to the vatican yearly, but she sure goes.

:rotfl2: My older sister has no kids and does not know how to have fun and be a kid. I told her I love Disney and she said it was a place to take your kids before you go on your grown-up vacation! Then she said something really stupid... She told me that the only adults that enjoy Disney are gay men, I told her that I better run and tell my husband that I am gay man!! :rotfl2:

I feel like I have to respond to this thread. I do not get Disney. I have never been and have always vacationed in the Caribbean, or in places where there is natural beauty like the Adirondacks, N. California, ect. I have never been attracted to theme parks or man made, concrete attraction. I will be going to WDW in mid Sept for 4 nights with my 4y/o son. He is at the age where he likes doing the rides and loves the live shows. I dont mind going with him and I am confident that Disney is the best in class of theme parks. I am looking forward to going in a few weeks, but more so, looking forward to my 2 weeks in St John US Virgin Islands in April. I guess my point is go with what ever makes you and your loves ones happy and be open to new experiences if you can.

you should do a disney cruise, that way your 4 year old would have fun and you could too,

just a thought,

and you never know maybe you'll get hooked on disney, just maybe:)

I'll never understand why some people actually get offended by OTHER people's vacation choices.

AXACTLY!!! I tell people that it's my "Happy Place". We also scrimp and save for our trips.....and I'm an adult and I can do what I want! ha ha ha ha!!:yay:

Disney fans are not the only one who get flack from their friends and family about their vacation travel. I post on a Virgin Islands travel board and occasionally see people who get greif from thier co-workers and family about their obsession with St John. I have been there 9 times and will make my 10th trip in April 08. While Disney is probably the best made made vacation destination (I dont know I've never been there but I'll let you know what I think when I return from my trip there in September), St John is one of the most natural vacation destinations. There is no airport so you must ferry over fron St Thomas, and 2/3 of it is US Natioal Park. Similar to Disney fans, people go there several times a year to soak up some of the world best beach, snorkling, fishing, shopping, and of course rum! Check it out.

That makes two of us.

I've been to Myrtle Beach, the Outer Banks, San Diego, WDW, Disneyland, Lake George, Las Vegas, Niagara Falls, and many other vacation destinations and if you pinned this long enough, you would get many opinions both positive and negative on each and everyone one of these. What do I care what anyone else thinks. They were all memorable vacations and that is all that matters.

OK, let me apologize way in advance for this, but this thread just kept churning and churning in my head about us being a "cult", until it turned into something completely silly, and I just had to write it all down. Rather than make a really long post, I put it up on my web site:

DisneyWorld in a Few Thousand Years

Hee! That was really funny! I sure am glad I got my most recent unreasonable demand, though (a studio at my home resort for the middle night of my trip). DVC: now there's a cult for ya!
