Yesterday at work a coworker was asking about my recent trip (last week). She has never been to WDW. She was asking me how many roller coasters I went on and I was explaining to her that what SHE thought of as roller coasters (such as at Six flags, you know MAJOR thrill!!) was not what was at DW. She didn't get it. I tried explaining to her what was there for rides and she just looked at me like I was crazy. She didn't "get it"

FInally I just told her what I tell everyone, you either get it, or you don't with Disney.

She said..Ohhhh...like a cult then?
WHAT??
I said uh no, just a fascination. She said no, like a cult, it's kinda scary when you think about it, the way some people love that place.

I just stopped talking about it altogether. Someone else asked me how could I have gone without 2 of my 3 kids since it was for kids anyway, didnt I need to grow up?

a cult? Gimme a break.

Of course it is...the Cult of Disney-ality.

Just tell here she won't be invited to the next induction ceremony...

if you dont get it it doesnt make you a bad person, youve just grown up and lost the magic....dont hate commiserate !!

If someone at work was that rude to me I think I'd tell them where to put their opinion.

Here's what I don't get....why do you want other people to "get it", the more others stay away, the less people in line in front of ME!

Why must one 'get it'? If Disney or amusement parks in general aren't a persons thing then who cares? Everyone has their likes and dislikes.

For me, I love Disney but sometimes I prefer to go to Six Flags or Universal or Sea World or whereever.

Beyond frustrating... I know. Sometimes I just think if only I could take them along one time to truely "experience" Disney, not just vacation there, they would have to understand... Ah well! Screw 'em!! :upsidedow

To each his own...
I work as a dental hygienist and have several patients that are infected with Disney fever and several that are infected with Vegas fever. The Vegas people go several times per year (these are not hard core gamblers they are older folks that go for the shows, food, and nickle slots) I have people all the time say "why are you going again? Don't you think you should show your kids something else like the grand canyon, washington d.c. somwthing educational?"
I have also been given a bunch of flack for not going to visit where I have family in Dallas Texas. Here's an eye opener for ya... by the time I fly all four of us to Dallas, rent a car, hotel, feed us, and find things to keep us busy for 6-7 days, pay for gas etc..... a Disney vacation in cheap in comparison. ANDmy family has a great time...all of us! But hey, that's just the way we roll. I have also had good friends say "when we go to Disney I want you to help us plan our vacation" then when it comes time, they snub my advice. My advice is simple:
1) ALWAYS STAY ON PROPERTY - too many benefits, late park hours, if you have a cranky child you can go catch some zzzzzz's and return after dinner. what do I hear "we got a great deal about an hour away from the park, only $700 a week for a house" you can stay in a value resort for that and get the benefits"
2) GO WITH THE PARK HOPPER OPTION - great fun to park hop especially if you break up the day with a nap by your resort pool.
That's it ...simple advice. Usually (please don't flame me ) they come back and say " the house was great but it was too much trying to do that whole park in one day the kids were tired and cranky and I did'nt feel like I had a vacation, we even took a day off and sat by the pool I don't know how you stand going and doing that all day for 6-7 days" I rest my case.
When someone does'nt "get it" I just smile and nod and say "I'll tell Mickey you said hello".

Took an extended family vacation to WDW during New Year's week. DBIL who was born in the 1930s and had spent some years in southern California was politely going along at MK, Epcot. The third day we were meeting for breakfast at Starring Rolls in MGM. He walked into the park, took a look around, loved the old Hollywood atmosphere and said "Now, I get it!" Throughout breakfast he kept asking if all of the rest of us "got it". :yay: Sure, we got it...we were just waiting for him. "Got it" comes at different times for each of us.

I hear ya....there are some people I know that I just can't talk to about Disney anymore....they say the same things....

why don't you go somewhere else?
There are other places to see you know...
Don't you get tired of seeing the same things all the time?
You should show the kids something else....

A cult? Well....I guess we're a happy place cult then that worships a mouse!:rotfl:

No,You misunderstand, My statement of you either get it or you don't, I meant that some people just don't get the fascination at all. Like these people at work, they have never been and just put it down, put me down for going. I work in a very small environment, a small restaurant with a handful of employees, I need to cover my shifts with these people so of course they know. I just mean that you love it and understand the appeal, or you don't, but there is no reason to make fun of it, make fun of the people that love it.

What I get from a lot of people is " Wow you must be rich to be able to go so often!"
Most times I say none of your business but to others I say well, you just spent more on a new television which I would never do.

Count me in as one who doesn't get why a person would like ONLY Disney, but not other Theme Parks (like Universal...or Sea World.) I honestly cannot understand that sort of loyalty to Disney.

I "get" that theme parks aren't for everyone. Not everyone likes that sort of thing. That's cool - whatever floats your boat.

But, I have more than once pointed out to someone who is teasing me that they know all the sports statistics back to 1930 and spend many hours a week watching those sports while I do my Disney crap...and they buy expensive tickets to those games, go see them, talk about the games and players with others, read the paper's Sports section...etc. ...etc. ...etc.

Everyone needs a hobby! I like theme parks. So sue me.

What is wrong with going someplace you like? And returning if you like it and find it relaxing??? Like posted above I know many who regularly return each year to Vegas and no one thinks anything of it?:wizard:

I get the "you must be rich" comment too. No, actually... far, far from it. I just budget well and travel cheap, I'm constantly looking for deals. I had one ex-coworker who said, "I don't know how you can go there on your salary." What a snob! Turns out the only time she ever went was a hundred years ago when she was in high school, she thought the only on-property was the Grand Floridian ("and it's like $150 per night, you know!") and the only park was the MK. She just could not grasp the idea that I scrimp and save on other things so that I CAN afford to go to WDW at least once a year. I've tried to plan vacations to other places, but with my kids still little and me being a single parent, most other destinations charge a single supplement so I end up paying for a "phantom" adult - you pay double occupancy even if you're a single - and so WDW really does end up being much more affordable than anywhere else. Heck, even a recent spur-of-the-moment weekend trip to the Omaha Zoo cost me 1/2 of what a week in WDW does.

People who I work with now have just learned to accept that I love the mouse, and when I go on vacation they tell me to have a good time in FL. They might not "get it" but they recognize that I do, and they've stopped thinking that I'm crazy -- or at least they've stopped saying it to my face. ;)

Janet

Hi Janet (Great name by the way:goodvibes ) I get the same questions about taking our DS to "other" places. I always say he is a kid (4) and will only enjoy vacationing with family for a limited amount of years (they become teenagers, did you know that:rolleyes1 ) I want to take him to lots of different places, but I cannot see spending the money now to take him to the grand canyon or Washington D.C. or Williamsburg or Gettysburg or many of the great attractions in this country until he is old enough to understand the signifigance of these places. At 4 he gets Disney, loves Mickey & the gang, and has a ball. I always use the I'll tell Mickey you said hi line:thumbsup2

Janet (I feel like I am talking to myself;) )

It seems to be okay for people to be crazy about hitting the slopes every year or going to the beach on a yearly basis, but mention going to Disney once or twice a year and we are in a cult! Go figure

Some people just don't and will never understand.
