Hey folks....I'm not making this stuff up. I'm just trying to let you know what the Religious Right is pushing in this country....

Birth Control Insurance Bill Dies Again
Save It Email It Print It
(KUTV) Some women have health insurance, but their insurance won't pay for birth control, and they can't afford the extra expense.

Wednesday morning, for the eighth year in a row, Utah lawmakers voted down a bill to required health insurers to include birth control.

2News Rod Decker has more.

Well, it's complicated. The legislature can't regulate about two thirds of Utah's health insurance. That part of the market is under federal law. All of the health insurance that the state can regulate already offers birth control.

“It's preventative medicine. It helps women plan their families so they'll be healthy,” said Karrie Galloway of Planned Parenthood.

Advocates told the senate committee that access to birth control is important to women's health. Insurance spokesmen explained all of the women who could be guaranteed birth control coverage by the legislature, already have birth control coverage.

Advocates of this bill admit no Utah woman would actually get birth control from this bill.

The advocates say the bill should pass to guarantee that coverage continues, and insurers don't backslide.

Karrie Galloway, planned parenthood:

“Assist women to make sure birth control isn't cut off their drug plan,” said Karrie Galloway of Planned Parenthood.

Karen Clark, who testified, says women don't really need expensive birth control in any case.

“The best birth control is abstinence and that doesn't cost anything,” said Karen Clark of the Eagle Forum.

“Even if they are married, they should be abstinent? Decker asked.

“When they have to they can be abstinent,” she said.

Not sure what the problem is. My health care plan at work doesn't cover birth control. If we want it we come up with the money to buy it!

There are tons of medications health insurers won't cover that people have to pay out of pocket that could make us healthier. I think your just trying to push you own agenda!

Just an FYI, birth control is readily accessable at Planned Parenting and other womens clinics at low to no cost.

There are many insurance companies that have never covered birth control...it's been that way for years (right or wrong). I'm not surprised to find that many companies STILL don't (and don't intend to start) cover birth control.

And you think it's acceptable that it doesn't cover birth control, or other neccesary medications?

My point was more the bolded quote....that the Religious Right in this country thinks that you shouldn't be having sex...even if you're married...unless you want to have children. And these are the people shaping the laws in this country these days!

:confused3 I'm past the point of needing birth control now, but for 25 years we used several inexpensive methods, including abstinence when necessary. My insurance never paid a dime of it. Birth control is not terribly expensive--birth control medication, however, is. Not to mention the effects of taking a systemic drug every day of the year. Why should insurance companies have to pay for a drug that is not used by over half the population? and for the record, I don't think they should pay for Viagra either.

BC isn't a necessary med. Not covered by many plans. Speech therapy...not necessary, not covered. Anti nausea meds for chemo...not necessary or covered. I had to pick up the chemo med from a different state personally for my insurance to cover. Everything can't be covered.

The first company that DH worked for didn't cover birth control pills because the owner didn't believe in them, his company, his choice. They changed that policy when Viagra came on the market and THAT was covered. I have never really understood why companies didn't cover birth control pills and other forms a birth control for that matter. You can buy a LOT of pills for what it costs to pay for the birth of a baby.

I've always been relieved and very proud that Illinois does require it to be covered if other perscription medications are covered. :thumbsup2

Denying the coverage is stupid on so many levels. First of all, many plans that don't cover birth control will cover ED drugs! Secondly, from a cost standpoint, wouldn't it be a bit cheaper to cover the pill every month versus a delivery?

Anyway, glad to know that a few old rich white men still know what's best for my body and family planning!

Why should birth control pills be excluded? Many women are on birth control pills for medical reasons rather than preventing pregnancy. Besides, I, for one, pay a lot of money for health insurance and I think that it is completely appropriate for my BCP to be covered. I don't think that I should have to "come up with the money to buy it" in addition to paying my premiums.

Not to get snarky, but what is your real objection to BCP being covered by insurance. Are you trying to push YOUR own agenda?

Who cares what the religious right thinks, live your life. Btw, the bolded portion is just someone with an agenda who testified, not the people 'shaping our laws'. You don't think there were people with opposing agendas testifying?

This is much ado about nuthin....

I think what they said is insurance companies shouldn't have to pay for you to be able to have sex whenever you want(not medically necessary is it). If you wanna do it, pay for it yourself.

That's the puzzling part IMO. You would think that insurance companies would be eager to cover a preventative that could potentially save them plenty of money.

But preventative care is often not covered by the insurance companies. I guess that there's some logic to that but I don't get it.

I think that legislation has only been around for a couple of years, but I agree! Woohoo Illinois!!! Of course, we still have the pharmacists who think that it is okay to refuse to fill BCP and morning after pill prescriptions.

For a majority of women I know who are the pill for reasons other than birth control, it certainly IS a necessary medication.

I have no agenda, we use birth control and pay for it ourself. I don't expect some one else to pay for me the opportunity to have sex when I want.

You are right about that. On the other hand, I would have died without the chemo.

I totally agree. The Religious "Right" is ridiculous. Why should I live like a nun just because I don't want kids? And I don't believe for a minute that everyone in the "Right" is saying every time they get into bed, "Okay, I am now going to do this because its God's will and God wants me to multiply." I think its more like, "Oh I really want some nookie!" They are hitting the sack for their own gratification like anyone else. Gimme a break.

And if insurance companies don't want to cover BC, then they shouldn't cover fertility medicines, or male impotency medicines. It should work both ways.

You really do not have to. No one is forcing you to do anything you do not agree with. It is as simple as that.

Who said they weren't?
