No one knows what the criteria are. Doubtful anyone will be contacted more than a few days prior.
Maybe, they're making it up as they go?

That's precisely my point. Everyone looks at this thinking "This is gonna be awesome. I can now schedule TSMM for the afternoon and can finally sleep in on my DHS day". But the capacity cannot be changed. Those afternoon slots are limited and will be in very high demand.
I will say it's going to be fascnating to see it all play out.
And? I love idea of Avatarland, not everything should be about princesses, never heard of TT singersand can uderstand 3rd hour cut. Point is, what you may see as a failure, others may see as a success. And only Disney knows statistics, handful of people complaining hardly represents anything.
And they'll likely be taken almost immediately on the first day of booking availability, effectively locking out those who don't necessarily want to reserve a ride time weeks or months in advance.
I confess - I only read about 1/2 of this thread so I may have missed something. We will be there from August 12-21 and will be using DME but since we're arriving prior to this next test day of August 14th I'm assuming we'll not get selected to participate. (Waaaaa!!!)
I just want to know if it's going to cost extra and WHEN these reservations have to be made. I will NOT be happy (notice this is in all caps and bold) if these reservations have to be done prior to the day of going to a given park. I already hate having to make ADR's 6 months out. Even 6 weeks out. I wish I could just eat wherever I wanted whenever I decide I want to eat. It's bad enough if I want to eat dinner at Via Napoli I have to plan my whole day around being in Epcot by a certain time. DH hates how ADR's interrupt our days. Sometimes we just like to "wing it" and I'm afraid this new FP+ or Next Gen or whatever will just further inhibit our ability to be spontaneous with our days. Likewise I also hate flying on SW because of the check-in at 24 hours if you want a good boarding number thing. This sounds like it has the potential to be the same thing - we may have to sign up or register or login at exactly 24 hours ahead of when we want to ride or some such crazy stressful nonsense.I just wish there were more details available...

My biggest concern is people booking their Fps for the early morning and thus changing the way that planners tour. If they pre booked a lot of Fps for the headliners right after RD it might clog up the rides we are used to breezing through without lines.
I just read most of the thread and I am reserving judgement until more details are available. We will be there 8/19-8/28 so maybe I'll have more info in a few weeks. If they pre booked a lot of Fps for the headliners right after RD it might clog up the rides we are used to breezing through without lines. I was hoping that they wouldn't even be testing this until the fall so we wouldn't have to even think about it until next year.

I can already picture people getting up early 180 days out to reserve TSM. Planners will love this and those who hate to plan won't. That is if any of this conjecture is correct.
This idea about this being available mostly for onsite guests is interesting. I see people comment that Disney wants their guests to have more time to shop and dine and so on. Offsite visitors could also spend more money on shopping and dining. I've never seen Disney turn their noses up at money from any source.
But there should be a perk for WDW resort guest that offsite guest don't get. I am not sure why so much opposition towards that. I don't get the it's not fair attitude( not that you are saying that). I also think that having it a tiered system where the amount of choices you get are tied into the type of resort you stay at is also a great idea.
I understand your point, but in my mind it brings more of a class system into the parks--an idea that rubs me the wrong way. Onsite guests get extra hours, and by my thinking that's enough. It also makes some sense since onsite guests are closer and can get to and from the resorts more easily than offsite guests.
Not that we know that this is how it will work, but you pay more, you get more. This is how it works for any vacation (not to mention everyday life).
Think about it, if you have extra money to spend you will take your kids to overpriced character meal, if you do not want to spend money, you will just go to M&G and stand in line.
