Month of September WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Rhonda - I don't have direct experience with the 760 but have used the 769s for the past year and they have worked out great for me. I originally started running in Kayanos but they stopped working after a while because the toe box wasn't high enough. It caused problems with my toe joints. The NB were much better for me but I haven't had a chance to try the 760s because I still have two pairs of the 769s :)

Carrie What's on your plate for fall races?

......
"Don't overthink it, don't underestimate it".
Maura

We have nada fro fall races. Have a half on our local path this weekend. WOn't know until Thursday or laater if we are going ot be home, though. Plus, I don't think we're ready for a half right now. usually do Grand Radips, but will sub that out for teh Castaway Cay 5k. ;) How about you?

Patty - GOod to see you! Yay for doing the full in January!!! Had no idea about dale's appendix. :scared1:

So I tried something different today---I ran to work. Actually, I ran to the gym across the street from my office, 8.2, then did another 1 on the TM at the gym.
Awesome!

But excitement!...the upgrade to my Sauconys comes in purple
:banana: lol. remeber when I used to tell people to suck it up and go for style, not color? :upsidedow I love that there are so many color choices now!!!

I had a very fun (and relaxing) 5K this morning! The weather was perfect at 8am! Overcast and not too hot yet. We had a great time!
Yay!!!!

Jackie - SO sorry that you will need surgery. :wizard::wizard: That training goes well. yay for teh new park!

Joan - Woo hoo on teh PR and teh great trainign runs!

Vicky - So sorry about the ITB. Hope you can find a solution. best I know is rest. Have you tried teh bands?

Ronda - I loved my ASICs 21xx. Ran in them for 5 years. Just switched ot a better one to fit my orthdics, though. If you have a really high arch, you may want to try teh ASICs Kayano. Good luck!!!!

So, I was whining about not wanting tri season to end. God heard me adn gave me weather that made me want to end it Saturday. Cold and rain. brrr... Still fun, though. And, I PR'd teh bikl! Woo hoo. Pretty good for the awful wind we had. Had my best run of the season too. I'll take it.

Thanks Carrie. We are excited and determined to get that Mickey medal! (I had the appendicitis, but am all better).

I didn't sleep well at all last night and so did not want to get up this am, but I did and went to the Y to get some miles in. Going slow, but going. I've only been walking (I think I'm afraid to try to run). Will try to get some running in on Saturday when Dale & I will do our long runs at the local park.

:headache: I do recall now tha tyou were in teh hospital. DOn't think I knew why. **Must slow down when reading. Is your local park the state park with the track? I was ther ewith Cam & Howard a few year back when I was in the area for work.

Yes, Carrie, that is the one. It's 1 1/8 miles so it's good for those longer distances.

Greetings folks:banana: I have officially started training for the WDW Full :scared1: Marathon in January:cool1: Last night i did 4 miles at the YMCA. I'm real limited in time to train so i will be doing more walking :confused3 then running. But, i WILL FINISH!!!

What is your run/walk pace?

I've been running at 11ish but walking falls way down to 17mpm. What is a good mix of r/w?

For those who don't know, this is my hubby (referred to him a page back). This will be our first full marathon! He's much taller than me, so if he walks 15mm, I have to jog it. We finish a race and he's not even breaking a sweat and I'm drenched!!! :confused3

Yesterday i walked at a 15 minute mile and ran a 12 minute mile. When i finished my 4 miles i was not winded in the least bit. I will wait to boost my pace though. Don't want to rush things and cause an injury. Again.
Looking for advice/suggestions; Do people run on the balls of their feet or heel -to-toe? Do people run short or long strides? I, unfortunately, find myself mixing my strides and balls of my feet and heel -to-toe.

And he runs mostly on the dreadmill!!! (except for our long runs), in case that matter to someone offering advice.

Dale - You are supposed to land mid foot and not dig your toes in when you come up again. Shorter strides are supposed ot be best per Chi Running by Danny Dreyer. May want to check it out. Good to see you here!

Patty - Running together is TOUGH! It's so frustrating that if he forgets to go slow he will take off and leave you in the dust. It's frustrating that you are working your hind quarters off and he isn't breathing hard. Have I hit the worst ones? Sometimes, I think it was a mnircale that Scott and I stayed together while training together. While I can't say I never complained again, after mile 20ish of our first full, it all became worthwhile. Plus, around that same point, he started needing me too. I finally knew I wan't holdin ghim back, I iwas keeping him form burnign out. We can't do tri's together and it's good that we can do our own races sometimes. I tend to miss him like crazy come the run, though. Sharing the experience togetehr is awesome! Remember that if you get frustrated. If you don't, I don't want to kno what you're that much better than me. ;)

Carrie, no problem I DO get frustrated, cause I'm working so hard and he's not breaking a sweat. But am looking forward to running through the parks with him.

Did 2.25 miles today. I have a 10K in a month and while I know I can do it I don't feel nearly as ready as I wanted to be. I'm running it again this year with a friend who is much speedier and in shape than I and I had hoped to be able to pick it up this year. She'd still have to slow herself to stay with me (and she doesn't mind, we do this just to have some time to hang out together) but I really wanted to be better prepared to improve my speed. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to try my best in the next month to consistantly get out there.

Saturday there is a new 5K in town and it actually starts on my street. I haven't signed up but figured I'll see how I fee when I wake up on Saturday and if its good I'll just walk to the end of the street (literally like 3 houses down) and sign myself up. :)

Patty: My DH and I have occasionally run together. I find it really hard. He's faster than me usually but I can go a bit longer without needing a walk break. I just find running with him throws me off so much, I can't get into a groove. We still will do it now and then but it isn't always the easiest thing. We did a Half in May and we just seperated at about the 2 mile mark and that was that. I have friends though that run and train together all the time and for them it works beautifully!

Hi everyone! Did a 3 miler last night with the running group near my house. I went out with a group that was a bit slower and running intervals. The knee and ITB did pretty good. I wore a patella brace which worked. The only bad thing was that the velcro was itchy so I'm not sure how it will be on a longer run. Went slower on the first half to make everything was good and then sped up for the 2nd half.

Will try for an 8 miler as my long run this weekend and then I'm taping next week for my race (Scotiabank 1/2) on the 26th! Yay!

Ok folks, the point of view from the faster running partner:rolleyes1, Running 5K's i admit i have gotten to the point of "Hurry up already" (sorry Patty). Running the Broad Street 10 Miler i was disappointed for Patty in that she was running to soon after her appendix surgery. Although i thoroughly enjoyed the site seeing. She however did not seem to enjoy my running commentary. See, i like to talk while i run. As Patty would say, "Dale runs his mouth as fast as his feet".:yay: Part of my "conversation" though is geared to cheering us on :cheer2:, lifting our spirits and generally harrasing her. I tell her i like her to run ahead of me to give me something to look at.:cool1: Plus running in new locations gives me a mental lift (lord knows i need all the mental help i can get). Doing the WDW 1/2 last year was a great experience. Yes even in the cold, sleet and rain. :scared1: While Patty is planning on running with a more suitable partner at this years WDW Full Marathon i still plan on "shadowing" her for a period of time. Heck maybe the whole race.

Joining in!

I'm a late bloomer! Past mid-40's, and just got hooked Disney last few years! And, only started running in June 2010!
This January joined a Biggest Loser at work: that started my momentum! Almost 40 pounds off (which is as much as I needed to lose...well, maybe a a couple more) thru WeightWatchers.

I'm a walker, I do walk a lot (10k to work one way, but I don't do it daily, just every so often).
I decided to aim for the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (HALF), which is Sunday, Sep 26, doing it as a walk walk walk run walk.
I then joined the Learn to Run Programme at the Running Room, and am now doing the 5 km Programme! I had never run until this, except, perhaps, to catch the bus! But I'm doing it and loving it!:woohoo:

Until this Saturday past.... something happened, not sure what, maybe it was brewing and just now manifested itself, but I have an (slightly?) inflamed SI joint.

Aargghh! Going to physio, will write off the half if I need to, sure don't want to, but will if I need to (then the Half Marathon weekend will become a shopping weekend...is that any better?). The plan right now is to hold off running, follow his course of stretching/strengthening, use coldpacks, keep off the hills & off the upright exercise bike, and I may be okay for the HALF, if I do it slowly as well.

Anyone have experience with inflamed SI joints and have recovered from it?
Any advice or insights would be appreciated!

Oh! And I've already signed up for the local New Year's Eve 5k Resolution Run, and was planning doing the Disney Wine&Dine/MNSSHP 5k Sep 2011. And was planning on the local 10miler Jul 2011... (before last Saturday, the [running] world was my oyster.... )

I've had some patella issues too. In fact my knee buckled 1/2 way through the Princess 1/2 this past March. I was thinking of taping it for the W&D. Where did you learn how to tape it? Does it help? I tried a brace & it was just way too uncomfortable. Ugh.

Hi guys! I've been bouncing around this board for a couple of weeks. I'm officially registered for the WDW Half!! I'll be using John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield's Run/Walk training plan - training officially starts 10/4. In the mean time I've run 2 5K races and have been running 3 days a week and doing Bob Harper dvds the other days with a rest day. :) So I'm not starting from nothing.

I'm psyched!!

Hello to all the new faces! And of course, to the familiar ones too!

WalkingtheFog My acronym-ese is failing me....SI joint?

bounceliketigger You might want to check out KT tape. They have videos/instructions on how to tape for many different aches/injuries.

http://www.kttape.com/instructions/

I am a day overdue to run a 10 miler at marathon pace. Wimped out yesterday after a particularly challenging Vinyassa yoga class the night before, so I am going out later this morning. Only thing is...have to do laundry before I have any clean clothes to run in!
