Month of September WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

I did four miles this morning. I started in a foul mood. Stayed up too late. Kept hitting snooze. But maintaining grumpy requires a lot of energy. I spent it elsewhere. Good negative splits. Happy to get the first mile on this hilly route under 12:00.

It was probably in the mid 60s this morning. If anything, it felt like it got cooler as the day went on. I'll send some everyone's way!

Ronda

Did a quick 3 miler before work this morning - my pace was 11:29 m/m. I had a bit of pain in my left knee so I couldn't go as fast as I wanted. Like everyone else, the weather here was cool so it was pretty nice for running.

Lindy - The novice #2 was the one I'm going to go with. I figure I'll throw in a few weekends with running on both Saturday and Sunday. I didn't even notice that it was more mileage than #1. Thanks for pointing that out!

Carrie - I think I will stick to a lower mileage. Better to go into the race uninjured!

Maura - Do you have a time goal for your upcoming marathon?

Mama Crush - I like the cool weather but wish it was just a touch warmer. It got a little too cool too quickly for me :)

Have a great night everyone! :wave2:

So I tried something different today---I ran to work. Actually, I ran to the gym across the street from my office, 8.2, then did another 1 on the TM at the gym.

Reasoning: First off, you have to fit it in when you can. Second, I thought if I had to be somewhere at a particular time, I could push myself & see how fast I could really go.

Outcome: It took forever to warm up my shins & calves so early in the a.m., but once they felt ok I finished with an average 11-11:30 mm, which is not too shabby for me & my best time in a while for a run of that length. (Especially considering I had to take a potty break!).

All that said, I doubt I'll do that again! My muscles were sore as heck all day in work, yet those endorphins kicking in made me feel like a ferrett on a double espresso!!

Carrie What's on your plate for fall races?

Vicky I need to run 4:05 to qualify for Boston. I would like to run under 4:00, and my training goal (which doesn't include any stops, etc) is 3:52.

bounceliketigger I like your image of the ferret on a double expresso--too funny!

Ronda Way to hang in there. Takes me a while to get going on a run, too. First mile I ususally question why I am doing any of this.

So I was listening to XM 47--Alt Nation and at one point during a promo they said "Don't overthink it, don't underestimate it". I don't recall what they were referring to, but I decided that it was a good piece of advice to apply to my running. Sometimes, it's easy to get stressed about something--pace, weather, clothing (all of the above for the WDW full this year!) For my upcoming race, I will try to heed the advice--be prepeared, but don't get too mental about things.

Got back from the DL half late Wednesday and still catching up. First run this morning went out for 5, did 6 at a good pace. Weather is cool..very nice. I see some that were at DL are back at it and others still putting in the miles. Keep it up, these fall runs should be a piece of cake compared to the summer heat.

Hello Wishers! Haven't been here in some time. Hubby (dstevens) and I did the WDW 1/2 in January. I had appendicitis the end of March and fell off the wagon with any training. Tried to 'run, mostly walk' the 10 miler (Broad Street in Philly) in May and got sick. Gave me a bad feeling about running.

Well today we decided we are going for it. We signed up to do the FULL in January! I want that Mickey medal to go with my Donald. Hubby has continued running and walking, but I've been so bad. I started taking college courses in May and now with those, working 35 hours a week, it don't leave a lot of time for 'me'.

I hope to get my butt out of bed in the am and get some miles on those sneakers! Going to be beautiful here this tomorrow at least so I need to take advantage of it.

/
pjstevens-- good for you! Once you get going you'll proabably remember why you started a program in the first place!

The weather here is only going to be 87 or so this weekend, so hopefully I'll make the move outside from the TM. Here's hoping! Everyone have a great training weekend!

If anything, I get in speed training with the pup :thumbsup2 Oh and those squirrels last night ... grrr. they were lining the sidewalk taunting! so much fun putting on the brakes. Picture the Flintstones mode of stopping as I tried to stop the 80 lb brat from taking me face first after the squirrels. Gym, definitely the gym tonight :upsidedow

Happy Wednesday!

I tried running with our youngest dog when we first got her, but she's wicked fast...'cept when she stops on a dime to check out a lizard  She LOVES to go but I always feel like I'm holding her back.

10 miles on tap for tomorrow to finish up for Wine and Dine. Have y'all seen the new Timex GPS watch? Looks interesting, but not much smaller than the Garmin 205. But excitement!...the upgrade to my Sauconys comes in purple

Got four miles in this morning. Only walked, but the most of done in a while.

I had a very fun (and relaxing) 5K this morning! The weather was perfect at 8am! Overcast and not too hot yet. We had a great time!

MamaCrush - We got a nice surprise. It's only 75 at 4:00pm today! Don't know what happened, but I'm not complaining!

Patricia - Great start back at it. Nothing like that Mickey medal to get you motivated. At least you have some time to build up to it. I did 4 miles 2 weeks ago, 13 today. I'm on the "accelerated" training plan. I don't recommend it. :rotfl:

Mel - We have one dog who's wicked fast and too strong for me to hold, and one who gets too hot and just stops and lies down. Neither is good for long runs. I was really hoping to have a running partner. :sad2: Hooray for purple shoes.

Bounceliketigger - I've considered trying to run to work, since it's only 4 miles, but I just can't get the nerve.

Maura - I'm going to post your quote on the fridge for DH. He totally overthinks every race he does. He'll wake up in the middle of the night obsessing over every detail. It's perfect for him!

Diane - I love your account of running with the dog. I wouldn't even try it, but it would be similar. Start out skiing behind, end up dragging them in.

We've just found a new running place. Similar to Tracy's "Mount Trashmore," it's a recently closed landfill that's been turned into a park. Great trails and greenways, with a killer path to the top of the mound that's perfect for hill training. DH and I did our first run together out there Thursday night.

The injection seems to have moderately helped my hip, although there's still some pain. We may do one more right before MCM if the pain increases; otherwise, I'm planning to keep on training and do the full 26.2. Then we'll schedule the surgery after it's over, and I'll have no running at all for 3 months. :sad1:

Jackie

Jackie Hope you are able to complete your training and the MCM. The no running for 3 months I'm sure will be hard. Perhaps you will be able to cross train or work on your core.

AFM. I ran 7 miles this morning and the weather is awesome and should be the rest of the week. I ran 6 Friday so I'm feeling good about those runs after coming off the DL Half. Never felt great about about that run, but still PR'ed 2:07:08.

Hi everyone! Did a 10.5 miler - it was a miscalculated 11 miler which I didn't realize because I had to reset my Garmin part way through and 5 miles on Sunday. Both were pretty good but slow. I seem to be having some problems with ITB and left knee. I'll see if I can get my PT to look at it but suspect he's going to ask me to come in for a treatment or just to ice it and lay off the running. My half is coming up at the end of the month so I'm trying to take it easy but still get in a few miles.

Maura - Great quote! Good luck with your race!

Joan - Congrats on your PR!

Jackie - Hope your body holds up and you're able to do MCM! I'm glad the injections are helping and you're able to get in miles! After your surgery, is it just running or all activities that are hands off?

Mel - Yay for your purple shoes!

Jackie - glad the shot helped. MCM will be awesome!

Our weather has cooled nicely. Saturday I did six miles. We were visiting MIL in St Louis county. Rolling hills and pretty parks. Back and forth, back and forth.

I am struggling with my shoes. I started runing 18 months ago. First shoes were Brooks Adrenaline 9. RIP. Switched to the 10 in March. First long run the tongue of the right shoe went as far to the right as it could and the top of my foot started to hurt. Did the St Louis half in them in April and kept fighting the shoe. It feels like the midfoot is smaller. I have pretty high arches. I think the discomfort is from pressure over the top. I've put spacers on the lace so the tongue can't twist right. I've laced that shoe four different ways this summer. It's laced so loosely it sometimes feels as though I'm going to run out of it. Beyond 7 miles or so the top of the foot will begin to ache. It subsides pretty quickly after the run. Every morning when I wake flexing the foot up hurts. It goes away, too, after five minutes or so. Some days I'll get a tingling sensation down to my toes. In the grand scheme of pain this is minor and doesn't slow me down.

BUT, I'm getting to the point that I want to know which shoes I'll be running in come January. I feel as though I get one shot at this. I've made a list of likely candidates.

Since nothing else hurts I think I'm in the right kind of shoe. Does anyone have experience with these women's wide width, stability shoes:

ASICS 2150
New Balance 760
Nike Zoom Structure Triax 13

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for any insights.

I'm sure this goes against everything you've probably been told since you're in stability shoes, but have you ever researched or tried minimal shoes & or Chi Running? Vibrams are great for wide feet. Chi Running advocates for a mid-to-forefoot strike, which shortens your stride & places the shock in the middle of your foot, rather than on your heels. This goes along with the minimalist camp's theory that stability & cushion on shoes weakens your body's ability to handle the stride & impact correctly. Running barefoot or in minimal shoes builds the muscles in your legs and feet and enables you to stabilize your own stride, minimize injuries, etc.

Of course if you've looked into any of this then you know this already & I'm sounding like an annoying record.

Anyway, many folks have success with this--even if they pronate, supinate or whatever. And like I said, wide feet feel soooo good in Vibrams! I also found NB 550's have a really wide toe box but they're not stability shoes.

Good luck either way!:thumbsup2

Aw, come on --you can do it!:thumbsup2 And you will have so much energy through the work day!

I have the New Balance 760 and I absolutely love them. I've learned quite some time ago from personal experience that New Balance shoes are really good for my feet, and I've had one podiatrist and one ortho surgeon confirm my opinion! I have a different problem it sounds like-- I'm severely flat footed and severely over pronate. NB 760's help me run virtually pain free, and that's saying something since I started running considerably overweight and have had two knee surgeries when I was a teenager. (Wow-- reading over that, you gotta wonder why I run!) Seriously, I can't say enough good things about New Balance shoes.

Good luck!

I started wearing the Zoom Triax in June. I run 3X's a week about 20-25 miles. I have a wide fore foot and the wide give me good room. I also have a pair of nike elites that I like, but on long runs my toes tend to bleed when I wear these and they only come in med. wide. I can have ITB issues but I think the Triax help to keep that at bay. My old shoes were discontinued and it took me a year to find the Triax and I just ordered another pair today. Good luck on your decision.
