Tracy - Welcome back.
This week went fairly well. The blister I had on my right foot never did burst and didn't give me any more trouble. On Monday, I did a short 2 mile recovery walk and used a blister pad on the blister went really well. On thursday, I did 4 1/2 miles. Most of it at or above my 1/2 marathon goal pace. On Saturday, I decided to do 9 miles. The first 7 1/2 to 8 miles went well although I might have went a little fast I averaged a 16:30 mile where my goal pace is only 30 sec. slower at a 16:00 mile. During that 7 1/2 to 8 half mile, the soles of my feet started really hurting and I needed to slow down my pace and start my cool down at mile 8 instead of mile 8 1/2 like I had been planning. The good news is I was able to go further than last week without foot pain, and I didn't get any blisters. This week is going to be a "rest week", so my total miles will be lower to give my feet a chance to feel better.
I have been mostly doing the "Marathoning for Mortals" 1/2 Marathon walking plan. I decided to start early because of being the winter and fearing I would need more time to build up my base. The plan called for long walks of 8 miles 2 weeks ago, 6 miles last week and 10 this week then taper 2 weeks. Because I was able to keep up with the plan and only missed 1 long walk, this would have me peaking 3 weeks early. The jump from 8 to 10 worried me so, I decided to do 8 two weeks ago, 9 last week, and 6 this week. That still puts my 2 weeks ahead of schedule. My thoughts after this are to do 10, 7, 10 (or 11) then taper 2 weeks. Does anyone have any better suggestions than that?
Wth reguard to my shoes, I have wide feet and have trouble finding shoes that fit, New Balance has been my shoe of choice, I currently wear a side 13 - 4E . Most other shoe brands hadn't fit right. For example I have tries Nike's wide with and Saucony's wide width and they aren't wide enough. I should have gone to a regular running store but went to a regular New Balance store because I knew they would have a shoe that fits. These shoes have been better than the shoes I started out with. Prior to this I would get shin pain fairly easily especially when I started out too fast. That problem went away almost immediately when I switched shoes. I'm actually able to run "a little" in these shoes. When these shoes wear out, I will make the road trip to a running store for a full gait analysis and to see if there is another brand of shoe I like better.
