Month of March 2010 - WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Hey all! Do me a favor and write March 16, 2010, down. I did 2 works outs yesterday! :scared1: lol, one was just yoga, but I sweat a couple gallons off, so it's sitll a work out. then, we did my favorite work out last night. Biked to adn from dinner!

OK, so neither was a killer work out, but pretty good for me! Felt awesome to get that bike off the trianer last night too!

Jen - Great to see you here again!!

Sorry, I am way behind. No matter how short, I always have a heck of a time gettign back in the groove after a WDW trip.

How was everyone's St. Patrick's day? I got in a quick 4.5 mile run yesterday after work which will be the last pre-National Half Marathon run for me. I wanted to get home and get it in while all the drunks were still at the bar and not on the road. I met up with some friends and on the way home it was pretty obvious (as it is on many drinking holidays) that a lot of people on the road shouldn't have been.

Hi! Can I jump in? I'm planning on running the 2011 WDW Marathon. I've done two half marathons and I'm also a zumba instructor. I'm not a particularly fast runner, but I do enjoy it. :) I'm very excited about doing 26.2!

Hi everyone! It's been a busy month but I'm checking back in. Did some hill repeats last night. I'm not exactly sure how long they're suppose to be so I picked a hill about 0.25 miles long and fairly steep. Got some pretty good times in and it makes me feel a little better about my upcoming 30K... although the killer hill is at the end of that course so who knows. Did a 5 miler this morning - when is it going to stop being dark at 6:30AM? :)

Paige - Welcome! I'm doing the full in 2011 as well! I'm not fast either!

Megan - Congrats on your PB at the Princess!

Good luck to everyone going to DC this weekend!! Take care!

Greetings on another gorgeous spring-like day here in MI. It's all gonna end this weekend, but it has been wonderful to enjoy this week.

Carrie WTG on the two workouts. Doesn't matter what they were. The fact that you did them at two distinct times during the day is more than I do.

Frank Good luck this weekend. Wishing you a speedy race!

Paige Welcome! Signing up for the full marathon was one of the scarier things I have done. But I did it (the race), and you will too.

Vicky It's only a temporary bummer that it's still dark at 6:30 (although, I admit that I haven't seen 6:30 in quite a while!). Sounds like your race training is going well. I have never done any hill repeats, although I do incorporate what passes for hills around here into my long runs.

As for me...tempo run and yoga this am, to work off the lovely Corned Beef, Champ and Sauteed Cabbage w/Bacon that I made for dinner yesterday. Yum...now I'm hungry!

Hello everyone!

It's been a long, long time since I've been here. Anyone who is on Facebook with me probably knows that I have been dealing with a major health crisis with my 11-year old daughter Annika. She has been suffering from unexplained, severe abdominal pain pretty much ever since we got home from Marathon weekend, and has missed school most of the time since then. Needless to say this has completely taken over my life at this point, and everything else has moved to the back burner. She had a colonoscopy/endoscopy this past week (a truly challenging experience), and we hope that when we meet with the GI specialist next week we will have some more answers. She's been doing somewhat better since we made some changes to her diet, but the pain has never really gone away.

I probably won't be running the Unite Half Marathon next month in New Brunswick (unless we have a miracle here at home - which I am completely open to!!). However, I will definitely be doing the Broad Street Run here in Philadelphia on May 2nd, since I have committed to running it to raise money for my children's school.

I really do want to start running again soon, since I think it will help me mentally and emotionally right now. However it is hard to do it when so much else is going on.

Anyway, I just wanted to check in and say hello to all my WiSH friends who aren't on Facebook! I can't wait to have this behind us and be here regularly again.

Kira Sending pixiedust: to your daughter and to you. I hope you get answers soon to what is troubling her, and that there is a good remedy for it. Not having answers must be tough for you.

Maura

Frank and Pat Good luck this weekend at nationals.

Kira Will be praying for you and your daughter that the doctors will figure out what is wrong.

This week has gone well for me. I gave final exams Monday and Tuesday and was off from work the rest of the week (I have 1 more exam to give tomorrow before spring break officially starts). Tuesday, I did 30 min on the treadmill at school before work. Wednesday I did 3 1/2 miles.

I decided to do my long walk for the week today. I completed 8 miles. Everything went real well for the first part of the walk. By the end though I ended up getting a small blister on the ball of my foot just up from the 2nd toe on the right hand side. For some reason, my right foot has been giving me more problems than my left foot. I don't know if I favor that side or what, but the insoles on that side are more worn out than on the other side.

Frank and Pat Good luck this weekend at nationals.

Calling it the nationals makes it sound like I will be competing for an olympic spot, sadly that isn't the case :goodvibes.

It was a really fun race, I posted a mini report here and will add at least a photo of the medal once I get home.

Kira- Good luck getting an accurate diagnosis. It's hard to treat a problem until you know what it is.

Hello runners! Sorry for the sidebar, but thought you experts might be able to answer my question.

Does anyone know a good place to get either a blank (that I could write on myself) or personalized race bib to wear in memory or honor of someone else? I have seen runners wearing them on their backs during races, but have never seen them for sale anywhere.

Thanks so much and sorry for the interruption!

I got back from my DC National Half and Wilmington, DE Caesar Rodney Half marathons weekend this morning. I looked back at my training log and in the 10 weeks since I ran the Disney marathon, I only logged 16 runs, almost 1/2 of those coming in January before my TFL issue. In those 16 runs, I ran 65 miles, an average of around 4 miles per run. My longest run was a 10k race at the end of Feburary.

The good news is that my leg felt fine throughout both runs; the bad news is that I was way undertrained for a 13.1 mile event. I did discover that on practically no training, I'm good for about a 10k distance; after that, my races fell apart.

Kira - so sorry to hear about your daughter. Sending good wishes your way. I hope everything works out.

Just checking in. Haven't been here in a while. Having some computer issues. Hope everyone is doing well. I'm getting ready for the Indy Mini-Marathon. Will try to check in more often.

Happy training!
Terri

Terri Hope your training is going well. And that your computer starts to behave.

Today I had one of those ego-stroking moments. A woman in the gym--probably in her late 30's--all of a sudden said to me "Have you been running all your life. You look like a runner. So natural" Yes sirree, I felt pretty good. We then had a nice chat about how no, I've only been running for two years, and yes, if I can do a marathon, anyone can.

It's nice to hear that. And I was smiling for my entire walk home.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Maura

Paige - Congratulations on signing up for the full! Many of us aren't particularly fast, but we've had a lot of fun doing it!

Kira
- Welcome back. I've been following Annika's problems on FB. Keeping my fingers crossed that they can find some answers soon. I hope you can get back to running soon. You need some time for yourself.

Jeremy
- Have you had a running store analyze your stride? They may be able to offer some suggestions if you really do favor one side more than the other.

Pat - I'm impressed that you can do 10 miles on an average of 4 miles of training! You did a terrific job considering your training.

Terri - Keep checking in, both here and the Indy thread. I'm going to take it easy for a week, then concentrate on a 5K next month, all while training for Indy. I think I'll call it multi-faceted training!

Maura - Way to go! And I agree with her - you look like you've been running for years. I have to remind myself every time I see you that you just started this journey a couple of years ago!

I'm also having an ego-stroking moment, or week. I ran the Tobacco Road Half last Sunday and PR'd - by 20 minutes. Then on a whim I registered midweek for the Raleigh Rocks Half on Saturday, and PR'd again by an additional 3 minutes. 23 minutes in one week has me floating somewhere high above cloud nine. Now I'm going to take it easy for a few days before I kick it into gear for Indy.

Hi all, it's me.... um that would be Tracy, or Racey Tracy, or absent Tracy...:confused3

I would have to, as some others have, say sorry for being away. All the activites of January, then a half 3 weeks later and then another half 5 weeks later just really caught up to me. As some of you know I have had some issues with ITB, shin splints over the summer, toe joint pain, tight inner hammie all on the same leg. Oh and then a peroneal tendonitis that started at mile 9 of the Princess Half. UGH!! So i have just been taking it easy taking one day out of my miles schedule and doing 3's for short and aobut 6miles for a long day.

I have decided to join Tricia for a local 10k on April 11th, so that I am kinda exited about.
I have finally been able to get back to being trashy over at the "dump" or Mount Trashmore and that has perked me up a bit. Just need to keep at it.

Kira: I have been keeping up with your daughter's issues on FB. I hope they find some kind of news soon so they know how to treat it.

Have a good Sunday evening...

Tracy

Jackie Great job on getting 2 PR's in one week! Good luck with your Indy training.

I've been running regularly the past week. It's been great running pain free!!! I'm going to take the next few weeks building a base back and then follow a 6 week half marathon training plan for my Memorial Day race in Wyoming. I found the 6 week plan in this April's issue of Runner's World.

Jackie - Congratulations of the 2 PRs.

Maura - Having people notice your accomplishments sure brighten a day doesn't it.

Tracy - Welcome back.

This week went fairly well. The blister I had on my right foot never did burst and didn't give me any more trouble. On Monday, I did a short 2 mile recovery walk and used a blister pad on the blister went really well. On thursday, I did 4 1/2 miles. Most of it at or above my 1/2 marathon goal pace. On Saturday, I decided to do 9 miles. The first 7 1/2 to 8 miles went well although I might have went a little fast I averaged a 16:30 mile where my goal pace is only 30 sec. slower at a 16:00 mile. During that 7 1/2 to 8 half mile, the soles of my feet started really hurting and I needed to slow down my pace and start my cool down at mile 8 instead of mile 8 1/2 like I had been planning. The good news is I was able to go further than last week without foot pain, and I didn't get any blisters. This week is going to be a "rest week", so my total miles will be lower to give my feet a chance to feel better.

I have been mostly doing the "Marathoning for Mortals" 1/2 Marathon walking plan. I decided to start early because of being the winter and fearing I would need more time to build up my base. The plan called for long walks of 8 miles 2 weeks ago, 6 miles last week and 10 this week then taper 2 weeks. Because I was able to keep up with the plan and only missed 1 long walk, this would have me peaking 3 weeks early. The jump from 8 to 10 worried me so, I decided to do 8 two weeks ago, 9 last week, and 6 this week. That still puts my 2 weeks ahead of schedule. My thoughts after this are to do 10, 7, 10 (or 11) then taper 2 weeks. Does anyone have any better suggestions than that?

Wth reguard to my shoes, I have wide feet and have trouble finding shoes that fit, New Balance has been my shoe of choice, I currently wear a side 13 - 4E . Most other shoe brands hadn't fit right. For example I have tries Nike's wide with and Saucony's wide width and they aren't wide enough. I should have gone to a regular running store but went to a regular New Balance store because I knew they would have a shoe that fits. These shoes have been better than the shoes I started out with. Prior to this I would get shin pain fairly easily especially when I started out too fast. That problem went away almost immediately when I switched shoes. I'm actually able to run "a little" in these shoes. When these shoes wear out, I will make the road trip to a running store for a full gait analysis and to see if there is another brand of shoe I like better.

Hi everyone!

I thought I'd check here to see what's going on with everyone.

I've been putting in steps, but not much else in the way of training. I think I really need to take my own advice and get the XT going.

Happy training everyone.
